I know a dedicated group of people who write drivers for 3dfx video boards (19 years after they have gone out of business!) and some of the code for the AAlchemy boards still has not been broken.
so you want to compare writing a device driver for a highly customized video card to reverse engineering a pinball board that reads serial data and makes some lights blink and drives some transistors? ooooooooookay
I am willing to bet money Stern isn't sending the data down to the node boards AES256 encrypted or anything silly like that, slap a protocol analyzer or a buspirate on a good board and work your way back from there
