As I understand it, There are several types of failures: "off the shelf" components and "custom" components.
If the component that fails is a generic part then, yes, it can be repaired. Assuming you have the skillset/tools.
If the part the fails is a custom coded chip then (again as I understand it, please feel free to correct), we don't have the code nor do we know how to re-program the chip. At that point we are at the mercy of Stern to provide a replacement.
Maybe Stern will release the code and the steps required to load the chips. Maybe someone will figure it out.
