I’m toying with the idea of selling my huo SM to fund a GOTG.
Spiderman is awesome and me and the family love how it plays, but guardians has somehow turned into one of my favorite marvel movie franchises.
Got to play the it at pinfest and really enjoyed it (also enjoyed Iron Maiden and have never listened to a single song of theirs).
GOTG Didn’t flow like SM but was still a ton of fun.
    Pros? Cons?
Will I regret in the long run?
Would love to hear from people that either currently own both or have owned SM in the past and now own gotg and can provide throughts.

I sold my Spiderman to fund my guardians of the galaxy as well. I don’t regret it and the code keeps getting better and better.

Run away from this thought. Guardians is decent on its best days while Spider-Man is one of Stern's best.

Spider-Man also has a depth to its code that Guardians won't match. The code is bland as all get out on Guardians.

Once the new game shine wears off on GOTG, which took about 10 plays for me, you'll be wishing you either had your Spider-Man back or had rolled the money into a different game. Get more time on Guardians first. Really make sure you think it will hold your interest in the long run.

    #5 5 years ago

I'd like to say keep spiderman , but if gotg doesn't work out for you you can always just get another spiderman .

    #6 5 years ago

Appreciating the different POVs. Just had another fun game on SM which sways my thought process but there is something about gotg that totally captivates me. Definitely need to get more time on it.
Going to the Pin Map now to see if I can find one local or in NYC.

    #7 5 years ago

I vote spider man because all you do in GOTG is play orb multiball over and over but the new code updates are making it slightly better.

    #8 5 years ago

I own SMVE and have no interest in moving it. SM is an all time classic pinball game.

I just looked at picking up a GOTG and did not feel like it was “there” yet. If it was even close to Iron Man level it would have been in my basement literally yesterday. It was really rough out of the gate. Because of this it is not an easy sell right now so be sure you really like it before you sell a game you enjoy to get funds.

That being said GOTG is getting a lot better fast so keep an eye on it for sure!

You mentioned IMDN and I am like you in that I really didnt know the band, but got mine a couple of weeks ago and can’t believe how much I enjoy it. I don’t have “honeymoon” phases with pins either. I would pick IMDN all day over GOTG right now.

spiderman is 10x better game! wait another year guardians will be selling for 4k

    #10 5 years ago

Sm will always be the better game. It’s a classic hence the price over 10 years later. Unless you bored to death of it. Wait a few months be lots of cheap gotg for sale.

    #11 5 years ago

My only worry about getting a GOTG is reselling it. I doubt the code will ever be a home run so offloading one down the road may be a bigger loss than other more sought after titles.

    #12 5 years ago

My only word of caution in buying GOTG is regarding the fact that you love the movies. I'm sorry, but the crappy voice over work ruins this game for me (unless they've removed it). My advice, try to play it in a quiet environment so you can hear all the sounds and see how you like it. At a show or on location, sometimes you can barely hear the callouts and music.

    #13 5 years ago

I think Spiderman is the best game right now, best to wait and see what more code updates happens.

    #14 5 years ago

both are good games but i like spiderman a bit more than guardians.

When was the last time you played guardians? The new code on it is excellent.

All my friends are having a blast playing it too.

Spider-Man has retained it’s value better than many older titles and is one of the best Stern games. The does not mean you will not tire of it and be ready to move on. Guardians is fun. The Cleland sound kit really brings out the nostalgia factor of the franchise.

    #19 5 years ago

Thanks for all the comments and insight. Really appreciate it. Having limited space and funds for games stinks but knowing that I can get lots of biased/unbiased opinions/insight on pinside is very helpful to me. In the end it always helps me to hear opionions before making a “large” decision.

I'd have to say Spider Man.

    Wrong, wrong, wrong as usual.

Guardians code is light years away from where it was last fall. Stern keeps churning out updates for this game, and it recently was overhauled. New talent has taken over for the ruleset.

The game flows like butter. There’s a reason Borg re-used his Metallica theme. It’s a winner!

Not to mention not having to look at a shitty 1991 tech dot matrix screen.

    GOTG for the win!

    #22 5 years ago

Played Guardians at Pinfest. I think it's still too early to say if it will be a great game. Iron Maiden seems to be getting the love. You never know with Stern. Updates may be slow or final code may not be great with Guardians. They may focus their efforts on Iron Maiden.

Spiderman is awesome now. Buy it, enjoy it and sell it later, if you want, to get Guardians when the code is done.

Updates have been non-stop since it's release. Got a major revamp in .90 (perhaps the largest change log ever for a Stern update) which was released at the end of March, and a further decent sized update a week ago in .95.

Completely different teams working on Iron Maiden and GOTG. One does not affect the other.

Excellent is a major stretch. There's one on location a few minutes drive away from me. I check on it after updates. It's passable. It's no longer awful, but it's still just in the mid-tier range for Stern titles, especially compared to other recent releases. Spider-Man has some stellar code and the layout is superior. In a direct comparison, Guardians really only wins out in art.

    #25 5 years ago

Spider-Man a 1000 times over. All time classic. Pass on GOTG, for many of the reasons already mentioned above. The voice actors are especially grating to me.

If you enjoy the layout of GOTG, you'd be better off getting a Metallica or Iron Man. GOTG is a mishmash of both games. Either game is superior IMO.

Cleland's voice mod is an easy fix if you don't like the voice actors.

And what if Metallica the group does nothing for the person interested in GOTG?

No stretch at all. It has been a huge hit at my house and with my non-pin friends.

Playing a game on location to really appreciate code changes is dubious at best.

Mid tier? Laughably bad assessment. What do consider better in recent titles? Say SPIKE 2 games only. What's better, especially at the Pro level? This is the most solid Pro Stern has ever made. Almost ZERO compromises on items that effect the ball. Try comparing that to ANY other Stern since they introduced the 3 tier system, and you will find greater compromises at the Pro level.

    #28 5 years ago

I have all of the Stern SM models aside from the home version. I still think it's a top 3 Stern machine.

I play the GOTG Pro at Jenkinson's which sits next to a TWD Pro. Personally, I think the TWD Pro crushes it in terms of playfield design and rules, but some will feel differently.

    Excellent being a stretch?

    1 - Code isn't 100% finished yet.

2 - People have a lot of FUN playing the game. All reviews of people who have played it, is that they have a blast playing.

3 - Pinball is suppose to be fun. If people have fun or a blast playing the game, then the machine did exactly what it was designed to do.

You should really lighten up on the negativity. Your constantly repeated negative opinions carry no more weight than others.

I notice you didn't respond to my other claims, so Ill take that as a win on them.

As to learning code on location? I serious doubt you played GOTG on location after each update and to any great extent to learn of the code changes. More like you dropped a buck in, batted the ball around, shrugged your shoulders and said to yourself..."Nothing's changed".

I sold SM and bought GOTG and don't regret that move for a second. SM is a great pin, I wouldn't mind owning a SMVE at some point, because the art in the original is just bad. IMO SM just feels chopping wood. The new code for GOTG has improved the game tremendously with .87+, the modes are unique and fun, the video, callouts and music integration with cleland sound mod is awesome.

I agree the bad voice actors are a little annoying. Here is the mod thread...fix it. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/gotg-sound-replacment-mod

I'm not constantly negative. I don't like GOTG much, and a lot of others don't either. Imagine that, some people don't like what you do like and vice versa. Crazy world we live in. This is a thread comparing two games, so you are expected to pick a winner here. Spider-Man is a better game, that doesn't mean you have to white knight Guardians. As much as you want to bristle at a negative opinion, you should allow people to have them. Find some chill. Spider-Man is ranked #15 on the top 100. Guardians is #160. It's fair to prefer Spider-Man over Guardians.

I've played it a lot. I've put a lot of money into it. We play it in our league a lot. It was in our SCS. It's seen very, very often in our events. My buddy is the one that owns it, and I often get a bunch of free credits on it. Don't assume, it makes you look stupid. I like pinball and I have an interest in anything that changes with games when code comes out. I also have to see these things in competitions and events, so I try to learn them as well as I can.

Please, the only one here in this thread that consistently makes himself look stupid is you. It's easy to rattle off how much you've played GOTG, but I can tell by your weak attacks on it that you know nothing of it.

It's typical of your attacks. You like to walk around Pinside like your shit doesn't stink, attack games and people on here, then merely say it's just "your opinion". Your shtick is getting old and more and more people are wising up to it.

So in parting, I have only one last thing to say to you.

I think you need to go for a walk. You're far too emotionally involved in this discussion. Here, you can have this list and refer to it any time you want my opinions, because you seem to be super invested in them. Here's how I would rank Stern games in low, mid, and upper tier status. Iron Maiden isn't included, sorry! I'll make sure to get right to you with that when I know.

    Harley Davidson - Low

    High Roller Casino - Low
    Austin Powers - Low
    Monopoly - Mid

The Simpsons Pinball Party - Upper
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - Mid
The Lord of the Rings - Upper
Ripley's Believe it or Not - Upper
    Elvis - Mid to Low
    The Sopranos - Mid
    NASCAR/Dale Jr. - Mid
World Poker Tour - Mid to Upper

    Awesome post!!!

Some posters on pinside just have a broken record syndrome.

    Let's analyze Guardians:

    - Art A+
    - Layout A-
    - Rules (as of today) B to B+
    - Music A+
    - Callouts B
    - Multi-ball modes A+ (Cherry bomb, Orb and Groot multi-balls are a blast to play)
    - Light show (LE & Premium) A+

    #39 5 years ago

I played a ton of Guardians at the Texas show and MGC. While it looks great and is very fast - and yes the code will get better - I could not stand the fact that the game would not shut up. The nonstop video clips and jabbering just rubbed me the wrong way. On the other hand I love everything about my SMVE. It would be one of the last to leave for sure.

That's hardly my best score, I just had a couple of plays on it today. I dropped in on my way to lunch. The code is better than it was, but it's still fairly rote, especially if you're playing to maximize score rather than explore the game. It's not a bad game, but it's not anywhere near on the level of Stern's best games, which it's being compared to in this very thread. This shouldn't be an insult to anybody's honor.

    Spiderman...... For now

    #44 5 years ago

Had most of the top rated games, doesnt matter, you like what you like, Spider-Man is great, loved it, sold it, twice..

Guardians, might not be the best of the best, it will get old too, but right now it makes me happy every time I play it

(And Im not remotely worried about resale value. If thats your consideration, quit buying pinball games ..)

    #45 5 years ago

I'd recommend trying a GOTG. If you like GOTG, wait for all the haters to dump their GOTG and get it for a deal. I personally love mine, but opinions are like @ssholes. Go out and try all of them!

^ ditto. SM is a great pin. Have owned it and sold it twice. Had my fun with it and eventually got bored of it. Currently enjoying my GOTG very much. The shots are tighter than SM, making it a more challenging pin overall, but the main multiballs are achieved easily enough which should keep the beginners entertained.

Mine is on location right now and is very popular. It and Medieval Remake are my best earners at the moment.

Being that you guys have had ypur fun with SM and are attracted to the Guardians theme I say go for it. And always remember all pinball is fun and no buying decisions are permanent, so no need to over analyze things.

The sheer amount of pinball passion, insight, info and debate in this thread is one of many reasons why I truly enjoy Pinside. I am gaining tons from this thread and I’m begining to think I should maybe hold on to my SM a bit longer, upgrade something to make it feel new (Shaker? Color dmd?) and enjoy it’s rebirth before selling it to someone else that deserves to own and experience this pin.
