Quoted from Rarehero:

Spider-Man is a teenage kid with amazing agility and strength. He's lanky....and, it's a stylized drawing. Sorry guys, Spider-Man has been updated since the 60's...time to catch up with modern art styles.

Not necessarily. It depends on the book and universe you are talking about. They based the character on a Spider-man who is no longer even a character in the Marvel Universe. Ultimate Spider-man died years ago and was replaced by a character name Miles Morales. He is a Hispanic-African American now. So they really didn't catch up.

You are kidding right?

Marvel has a bunch of comic lines. The one they are using for the pinball machine is the Ultimate Line. Peter Parker is the regular comic line went to college, got married etc... . Marvel then decided they wanted to go back to the roots and launch an "new" Spider-man in an alternate universe.

This was a relaunch of Spider-man, and came under a title called Ultimate Spider-man. They wanted to appeal to a younger generation and recapture what made Spider-man a unique character, a teenager who is a super hero that has teenager problems. They did keep the original in the Amazing Spider-man book.

By having 2 books, they could keep the older readers who grew up Spider-man by not erasing all the stories that dealt with old Peter Parker and get new readers by having a teenage Peter Parker. In 2011, they KILLED the Ultimate Peter Parker and replaced him with a new minority teenage Spider-man hoping to capture an audience that reflects a different time.

They based this pin on a dead character. There is no Ultimate Peter Parker, the guy on the slings is no more.

Now I'm curious, what age group are comic books marketed to these days?

Depends. Comics used to have a "Comics Code". If you had something unacceptable it would not get the stamp on it. This was a very strict code that made sure books were tame. The code was a stamp placed on the cover.

Long story short, the publishers decided to regulate themselves and since one code did not fit all they have a tiered system like the gaming, television, and movie system. "M" = Mature, which has adult themes, etc....

With a background reading comics from the 1960s - very early 1980s, this all sounds ridiculous. Comics, especially Marvel, used to have continuity of characters and story that made the books fun to read. This is all so confusing and bullshit it makes me yearn for DC's Earth 1 - Earth 2 crossover stories.

Exactly, now Marvel is doing the same thing that DC did and trying to merge the Multi-verses. It is basically trimming the tree. They based this pin on something that was trimmed.
