I have a MGOW who's sound is delayed. It sounds as if there are pauses in the speech. Some simple phrases like "attack" sound fine.

I noticed on pinwiki that there is a section that looks like it would be exactly what I am looking for, but there is no info under the link.

    http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gottlieb_System_80#Sound_is_.22garbled.22_or_phonemes_appear_jumbled

Can anyone tell me where I can find this missing info?

I can post a video of the speech pattern if anyone can help me diagnose.

Would love to then post this info to the wiki to help others.

    Thank in advance,

    JAZ

It's possible that a title for the section was added, but nobody ended up actually writing it for whatever reason.

You can try scrolling through the page revision history to see if it possibly was written at some point, but it's a lot to go through.

Looks like it was added then commented out in 2012.

=====Sound is "garbled" or phonemes appear jumbled=====
While this problem is uncommon, it's quite maddening to track down. However, since the board architecture is split between a "sounds" lane and a "speech" lane, at least the number of suspect components can be narrowed. In at least one instance, "garbled" sound was caused by a failed 74LS75 latch. Just after the game was turned on, sounds were normal. But, as components on the speech and sound board would "heat up", speech became garbled, progressively becoming worse, until the speech was completely unintelligible, and then completely missing. The 74LS75 latches may be replaced by 7475s.

Maybe ChrisHibler has some insight into this?

According to a thread on RGP, Chris seems to indicate the reason it was commented out was that it wasn't actually the cause of the issue he was having.

I had placed that text in the PinWiki, but the solution was premature.
I never did figure out what caused the issue with the board.
It would seem to "mix up" the phenomes. Sort of like splitting a word into syllables then reassembling the syllables in random order. Very odd.

I no longer have the board. I had to send it back unrepaired. I spent a long, long time on that board. Nothing worked.

That sounds very similar to what my board is doing Chris. It's like it pauses during certain times but all the parts of speech are there. I can record a video if anyone wants to hear what it's doing. I was looking for (part four) of the sys80 guide but I can't find it online anywhere these days. I can find parts 1-3, but no working like for part four where it mentions sound/speech issues. You wouldn't happen to know where I can find that would you? I read it once and know it has some advanced sound board testing techniques.

That part won't help. It was pretty basic.

Based one what Chris describes about the other problem board, it sounds like an issue related to sending the phenomes to the SC-01 speech chip. Speech is created in that chip by stringing together the sounds that make up each word.

Do you have another Gottlieb game or a Gorf, Q-bert, or wizard of wor video game to test the SC-01 in?

Q-bert's cussing is just a jumble of phonemes strung together.

Only other sys80 I have is Haunted House, which doesn't have speech.

But...the sound board in HH is compatible with BH. The only additional action is to move the SC-01 onto that board along with the ROMs.

Update for anyone else having a similar problem. I sourced a NOS SC-01-A sound chip and once replaced the speech is perfect!
