Thanks for your reply
that's a hell of a good work you've done there! it will sure help me on my journey to get it fully working.

For me the hardest part is now to find a scan of the backglass in order to make a nice repro out of it.

Best regards,

Hey, team Spectrum!

Question for you: when the solution to the secret code involves three or four of the same color, the computer voice will call it out.

“You solved the secret code! Three... red.”
“Spectrummmm! Four... blue.”

Why? Is there some significance to this?

Some combinations - if I remember correctly: 3 yellows or 3 reds - will give an additional award: 25,000 or 50,000 points. I don't recall any special award for 3 blue / green.

#54 3 years ago

I'm not sure but there looks like a bonus reference in the manual. But only red? That unfortunate.

Well that's pretty cool. Now that I think of it, I've never had a code with four yellow or four green.
It's a weird random way to get points, but then the points don't really matter in Spectrum, do they?

In case anyone is curious, the game doesn’t say “You are a Super Star player!” When you get your 2nd Super Star.

Quoted from seshpilot:

Unless your game gets confused (as mine currently does) and releases two balls occasionally, in which case it's a multiball game.

Todd mentions that at 3:30.

Did you get yours figured out? I would have to believe you have a stuck switch, which should show in the switch test.

However, I played one a lot near me and I just don't recall it ever giving a multiball.
I'm currently working on a Spectrum that gives a multiball when sometimes the bottom 2 blue targets are knocked down. I already changed all the capacitors on the switches throughout the whole game. All the switch inputs on the MPU measure around 1.2k ohms, so I don't see the MPU as the issue here.

Any other ideas?

#59 3 years ago

My Spectrum gets confused once in a while and gives me multi ball, I think it's a fun mistake. It sorts itself out in a few seconds, and you dont lose a ball. So what the hell. It an amazing game.

Has anyone ordered the Mirco playfield for Spectrum? I have inquired about the meaning of their statement, "original diamond shape inserts," but have not heard back nor seen any description of that. Are they referring to a diamond-shaped pattern molded into the underside of the inserts to disperse the light evenly?

I have been on CPR's Spectrum wish list for quite a while, but I cannot imagine they would do this title now. But, happy that it is available! Mine has a heavily touched-up playfield, but a perfect BG. Just fired it up again, but I may now have a power supply issue. Time for some investigation.

I provided the sample to Mirco and received the new repro. I think the line about diamond inserts is a copy/paste issue from another pf. That line is on several pf descriptions. None of the inserts are jeweled.

I just ordered the playfield and very excited to be finally able to update my worn playfield. I've talked to others that have ordered other Mirco playfields and they have been very impressed with the quality and workmanship. I'll have to let you know when I receive mine.

Hi all, visiting the club. I was at a friends house and he had a Spectrum. He was playing it with the glass off long term as the switch in front of the right saucer wasn’t registering and he would use a magnet to pull the ball out of the saucer. I adjusted the switch, but in the process I believe I blew a fuse. Now, while the switch registers the kick out hole and none of the saucers work. I’m going to go back to put in a fuse, can anyone point me to which fuse controls these solenoids and what the value of the fuse is? If you think I’m going down the wrong path, I’d also like to hear that so I can get this fixed.

I have been lucky to borrow this weird and wonderful game from a mate on long term loan, still getting used to it, give me 6 months and I might work it out

Hi All,

A friend of mine just dropped off his Spectrum for a rebuild and I was planning on making a color marching protective plastic set for this game. When looking it over I noticed that the original PETG plastic guides that are everywhere on this game are cracked in a few spots. I can make new ones but I cant find the original metal bell spacers that are pressed to fit. So, I was wondering if anyone did any Mod's to fix these other than Tape and hot glue My plan was to use color matching acrylic and just cut clear 1/2" acrylic spacers.

Looking for suggestions if anyone ran into this or has a source for the bell spacers.

Thanks
Rob

You can remove them from the originals (buff them to a shine) and insert them in the ones you build. Drill the hole a little on the small side, and insert them after heating the metal spacer with a heat gun or soldering iron. Test it out on a scrap first. I did this with my Mr Mrs Pacman. Works great.

You probably already know this, but you can buff the edges of the plastic guides you cut to be perfectly transparent and shinny. Sand them as smooth as you can, then use a buffing wheel with stick type buffing compound. I use a stand up grinder with a buffing wheel attached. You have to push the edge a little into the wheel to get them hot. Takes a little to get good at it.

Speaking of those plastics, I have one broken plastic that I’d like to replace but I don’t want to buy a full set. If anyone has a lead on the clear ball guide under the word “Spectral” in the upper left of the play field, please let me know.

The game i have needs that one as well. I will be making a full set (or pieces) for this game and will be available (eventually) in acrylic or PETG. Its my current project. I have not started this yet but plan on it either today or tomorrow. Im just not sure what direction to go yet. Getting the old bell spacers off and reusing them is going to be the trick here.

Heat the small end up with a soldering iron and pull the spacer out from the bottom. Clean up the spacer, and then unbend the top by inserting a nail into the hole and forming the top around the nail. Reinsert the spacer into the replacement plastics and use a punch from above to tighten the top of the spacer again.

The plastics and all the clears are available in a new set by CPR:

Still looking for the green drop target plastic that says "shoot green when flashing", mine is missing so I'm looking for used one. Let me know.
Thanks,

Forgot to mention that I'm also in the need of the metal stop ball bracket that at the top dead center of the playing field above the kickout hole.

They didn't come with drop target decals from the factory.

I know they didn't come with them. I was hoping someone made their own from the lights designs on the playfield.

Completed my latest restoration project: 1982 Bally Spectrum. Took about 6 months of evenings and weekends to complete.

The pin was purchased as a restoration project at the 2022 Texas Pinball Festival swap meet in March 2022, with restoration completed in October 2022. Pin was stored prior to purchase in an open shed, exposed to the elements. Only salvageable parts were the mechanical parts, wiring harness, coin door, sound board, and (surprisingly) the backbox lightboard with displays. Everything else was unusable due to the Texas weather and various vermin.

I’m going to be working on a spectrum a bit later this week. The connectors were not labeled so I’m not 100% of which one goes where. I know some are keyed. Can someone post some pics of each board with connectors attached, so I can make sure I’ve got everything plugged in where it’s supposed to go? Where does the ground strap for the cab not all attach to the head? Thank you

Hey there fellow Spectrum owners!

I've had mine since the late 80s / early 90s and absolutely love it.

It's time to replace the legs and feet. The legs are starting to rust and the feet got bent in the last move. There is some question as to what the "Correct" legs are. Mine are 27 1/16" long, but AFAIK Bally games from that era typically have 28.5" legs. (I haven't even been able to find 27" legs yet.)

So fellow Spectrum owners - how long are the legs on your cabinet?

#83 1 year ago

I still need that top metal bracket and the green plastic that goes over the top of the drop targets.

Spectrum only needs 5 more people to rate it to make it eligible to receive a Pinside rating. I'm curious to see where it will land compared to other games of the era. If you haven't rated it yet, please think about sharing your opinion.
