First of all, Happy 4th of July to everyone! That said, if you are looking for something fun and informative to listen to today while sipping your favorite beverage and firing up the grill then I ask that you consider giving us a listen. The first three episodes of our weekly show Special When Lit Pinball Podcast (sponsored by Two Brothers Artisan Brewing) have been uploaded. Myself (Ken) and my co-host (Bill) are based out of the Chicagoland area (home of pinball). We discuss the pinball hobby/industry with the occasional interview for good measure. Ep-1 is more of an introductory of ourselves, Ep-2 talks about the current status of pinball manufacturers, and Ep-3 is a really fun interview with Senior Game Developer - Dwight Sullivan of STERN Pinball.

Our podcast is hosted by Libsyn and can be found on SoundCloud, Spotify, iTunes (awaiting approval), and all other places your favorite podcasts are found.

Thanks in advance for any support and I hope that you find time to give us a listen! (Below are direct links to some of our interviews)

great job guys, can't wait to listen to this on the way home from work, today.

Thanks! We really appreciate you giving us a listen.

    Quoted from jeffc:

Always room for another pinball podcast. Subbed via rss.

Thanks so much for giving us a listen!

    Quoted from Eskaybee:

The Dwight Sullivan interview was excellent, look forward to listening to the others. thanks for sharing.

We really appreciate the kind feedback and that you took the time to check it out!

    #8 5 years ago
    Quoted from Cloud7:

    Awesome! I'll start listening!

Thanks, Cloud7 for checking us out!

We are over 600 downloads right now within the first three days so thanks to everyone that gave us a listen. Another episode will follow within the next few days.

    Quoted from desertT1:

Just saw this and started with the Dwight interview. He was very insightful in an interview in the magazine a friend got at Replay FX last year. I read that on the plane ride home and he quickly became a favorite industry person. Listening to him he has great energy and matching stories.

Dwight is very refreshing. He's a great story teller and has a great personality. He's very humble, enthusiastic, passionate, and naive (Haha, as he explains in the interview). Thanks so much for giving it a listen!

    #12 5 years ago
    Quoted from Cloud7:

I listened to all 3 while at work. Great show!! Keep up the great work!! Looking forward to more!

We really appreciate that you took the time to listen. Thank you very much. Another episode in a few days!

    #16 5 years ago
    Quoted from FalconPunch:

About half way through the Dwight interview, great job so far guys!
How did you record this? Are you in the same room as him? The audio quality is amazing

Thanks for the feedback! We are in the same room as Dwight using three separate mics.

    Quoted from Lermods:

Good stuff...now how do I get two brothers pinball beer to NJ?

Two Brothers Artisan Brewing is always working to expand to additional states for distribution. I wouldn't be surprised if this happened in the near future.

    Quoted from jeffc:

Listened to the first 2. Good stuff so far. Maybe I missed it, but what is the connection to the brewery? Are you owners, workers, or is it just your local hangout?

I've always been a fan of Two Brothers beer and I offered some help when they launched Pinball Pale Ale. One evening over a year and a half ago I'm playing Ghostbusters in my basement with my good friend Bruce Miller (VP or marketing for Two Brothers). Bruce was brainstorming ideas regarding a pinball themed beer.

I had submitted some artwork (as shown in the pic and you can see how we used this for our podcast logo) for an APA beer called "Special When Lit". Ultimately they went with a different logo and called the beer Pinball Pale Ale. That said, they did pay homage to my original idea by placing the "Special When Lit" tagline on every can of Pinball Pale Ale which I really appreciated. So long story short when I had told Bruce that myself and Bill (my podcast co-host) were getting ready to record a pinball podcast he offered to sponsor our show. There's more to the story but that's the short version for your benefit, ha!

Thanks for giving us a listen! We will be launching new episodes on a weekly basis. We go back into the Pinball Pale Ale Studio on Tuesday to record our next episode.

Below is our facebook page link (where we can interact daily) and our Libsyn hosted webpage. Each will have current links to all of our past and updated content. You can also find our episodes on Soundcloud, Podcast Addict, Spotify, iTunes (awaiting approval), etc.

Our prior two guests (Dwight Sullivan - Senior Game Developer STERN Pinball and Terry DeZwarte - Owner Pinball Life) were a blast to have in the studio. We have more interviews lined up but always open to suggestions.

    #42 5 years ago
    Quoted from 27dnast:

That was a great listen... thanks for doing that one guys.
His one comment about social media/Pinside might have been one of the more interesting things he said (well... not most interesting, but most personally insightful). Folks wonder why most manufacturers and designers avoid Pinside like the plague, Steve gave a very open and revealing response. And he he’s right. I get it.
Also - the High Speed story —- awesome!
What a good dude, one of pinballs best treasures!

Thanks for the feedback. When I had asked Steve if negativity affects him I honestly didn't expect that answer. I hope that one day he gives Pinside another chance but for now I can understand why he said what he said. It must be an emotional rollercoaster for a design team upon release of a new pin. You can't make all of the people happy.

Great AP interview. I knew they were tied to gigabyte motherboards, but didn't realize really what Aimtron produced (LED's for all coin-op gaming). I also love that they are reserving a line in the new building for contract manufacturing of homebrew games. You should post this interview in the homebrew thread in case anyone is thinking about mass producing their game.

We thought that third manufacturing line was interesting as well. Opens up lots of possibilities.

    #81 5 years ago
    Quoted from 27dnast:

I liked the last episode.... forget the news. A podcast with some down to earth pinball chatter is a breath of fresh air!
Funny you guys discussed the BSD game - obviously, anyone can ask what they want for a game. But just because someone dumped a ton of cash in mods doesn’t mean they should break even. I think it’s way over priced. I’m a big fan of the game (have owned one for almost 5 years)... but $6k land is crazy IMO. Perhaps for a true low mileage HUO or HEP restored. But for a clean routed example with a bunch of mods? Not so much for me
    Todd A

BSD seems to be on the rise (again). Thanks for listening to the show. We've received lots of feedback on this last episode in which we didn't extensively cover the news. Taking a break from rehashing what everyone else was covering was a breath of fresh air for us as well. We may implement more pinball "talk" versus pinball "news" in the future.

We've got some great interviews and guest hosts to close out 2018 followed by a surprise show for our listeners airing on Christmas Eve. So sit back and relax...we are just getting started!

    Quoted from Tuna_Delight:

Cool! Please ask him lots of questions regarding The Shadow (my FAVORITE Brian Eddy game to date).

Absolutely. As AFM and MM seem to get most of the coverage/praise I think it makes sense to ask him to discuss Shadow (at least that's the plan).

    #100 5 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Ask him how he still has such awesome hair!
Also ask him what he thinks of the Pinside consensus that he only came back to do sequels to AFM and MM.

I do want to discuss the similarities between AFM and MM and if he feels any pressure coming back after some time off. I'll definitely let him know that you were asking about his hair!

Just finished listening, great job guys.Brian sounds like a fun guy,I think he fits like a glove with the Stern crew. They have a lot of talent roaming the halls at Stern right now,I think he is right with his closing remarks, the best is yet to come!
It is a great time to be a player and owner of machines right now.

I had a lot of respect for Brian Eddy and even more so now after getting to know him on more of a personal level. He will fit right in with his friends/colleagues at Stern and I am convinced that he has some great things in store for all of us.

Thanks for the nice words regarding our conversation with Brian!

    Quoted from rotordave:

Working through some of the old episodes.
First thing - STP were an awesome band.
Second - a peeve - you keep referring to TNA and Beatles as “Street level games”
They are not that. They are “single level games”
“Street level games” were stripped back pins that Gottlieb made for a period 1990-91 to lower the price. Smaller cabinets, less features. Hoops, Vegas, etc.
TnA and Beatles are not that.
    Whew, I feel better now.
    rd

Yep. Dennis from Eclectic Gamers Podcast gave us a thorough explanation on our facebook page and I promise to never do it again.

Thanks for checking us out, rotodave.

    STP!!!

Wait, you made a t-shirt and you didn't have Margaret do it for you? Come on man, use your resources!

You guys do a lot for me, Terry. I've always appreciated that. We went with a silk screening process for the t-shirts or I would have definitely reached out.

I have to update this thread in a couple days. It's been so busy the past three weeks its been hard to keep up with Pinside. Sorry if I left you guys hanging!

    Quoted from 27dnast:

I know what he’s talking about... sure would be nice if people would just say what they mean without doing a dance.

    It's not always that simple.

    Quoted from gstellenberg:

Just listened to this episode. Surprised I didn't get a call to chat about all of the things we're doing, which already includes many of the things talked about, such as
    - Head-to-head connected gaming (2-way HeadsUp! at TPF 2017 and 2018. 4-way Cosmic Cart Racing played at TPF 2019)
    - Machine level/tilt comparisons
    - Cheat detection
    - Game rules that make sense for head to head gaming
    - Display on the playfield / scoreboard & status right where you're looking while playing
The P3 game library continues to grow, the platform features continue to expand, and the blind spot some people have had is closing. If all you've played on the P3 is Lexy and Cannon Lagoon, you're missing out on a bunch of fun new games and a bunch of the features described in the podcast. We also announced at TPF that our next game kit will have interactive mechanical elements lower on the playfield, addressing feedback from some about the first few games feeling too open. I'll go so far as to say game #4 will give THE experience that most people are clamoring for in this industry, and it'll cost a fraction of the price of a NIB game from other manufacturers.
    - Gerry
    https://www.multimorphic.com

Thanks for checking in. All I've played is Lexi and haven't had significant time on additional titles from Multimorphic. So my apologies for being ignorant as I only felt commenting on what I've had a hands on experience with in this instance. I've said in the past that I am in support of your platform and look forward to investing more time learning about what we are all missing.
