Hi.
My LOTR Subwoofer (in the bottom of the cab) seems to not be working at all. The speakers on the head work fine, but nothing comes out of the large speaker. Could this be a fuse? What else could cause 0 sound? I have it hooked up to an external sub and that has quit producing as well.
Any intel would be appreciated!
Thanks
Kyle

Do you have a meter?

#3 9 years ago

Yes. What do I test?

Are you feeding the external sub off the woofer contacts in the cabinet? Most do and that's why both are out if so. I'd check wiring from woofer back to the head and see if you have one off or broken.

With nothing plugged into the 2 speaker terminals, what reading (meter set to OHM) are you getting?

Yes I am feeding the external sub off the contacts....looks to be fine everywhere.

What/Where do I test? Do I just touch one prong to each terminal on the speaker? (Sorry I don't know)

Vid can help, if it's not a broken wire, it's beyond my knowledge.

No need to be sorry at all, you are about to get your Volt Meter Cherry busted live on the net.

Turn off the game.

If you put the 2 meter probes on both speaker terminals, you will read the resistance of the coil.

If the coil is blown out, the meter will read 0 (zero).

If the coil is shorted, the meter will read 1.

If the speaker is good, an "8 ohm" speaker will read about 6 ohms, a "4 ohm" speaker about 3 ohms.

Ok. I set it to the "upside down" horseshoe I get a reading of 0 no matter which side the prongs are on. So I assume the coil is blown? Does that mean I need a new sub? Or where is this coil you are talking about?
Hey...I am learning!! Thanks Vid!!

That sure sounds like the speaker coil is blown.

It is unimportant this time, but normally the red lead goes to the + tab.

Got an old speaker from your college days to test with?

Sorry, no old speaker. Is the coil attached to the top of the speaker? I will probably have to order a new one right?
