Hey working on my Flash Gordon and the left flipper freaks out when you hold the flipper button down.

Can anyone tell me what causes this?? Thanks!

That is the End Of Stroke (EOS) switch sparking. Being an early Solid State (SS) machine, the EOS carries the full current to engage the flipper coil.

You need to file (us a small points file of similar) the contacts and make sure they mate well. Adjust the tension on the two leaves of the switch so they contact one another with good pressure BUT make sure they open at the EOS or you will burn out the coil.

The EOS switch disconnects the very high power 'pull' coil and connects the low power 'hold' coil.

This adjustment is pretty critical so take time to get it right and you will have nice snappy flipper action.

A final point - ONLY use a file on contacts like this in earlier machines. NEVER file gold flashed contacts on newer machines or you will ruin them in an instant!

Either the contacts aren't opening quite enough, you've got a wiring issue, or your coil is bad. Has any work been done recently on it?

No work on it recently. Just started doing it here lately. I'll check those contacts and see what is going on. And report back.

    Thanks!

Your coil is bad. The hold winding (the thin wire) is probably broken at one of the lugs. You can try unwinding one turn, clip, strip and resolder.

It's called "machine gunning", if you want to search out other threads about the issue. But the responses above pretty much cover it.

Flipper fixed!! Small copper wire broken. Soldered it back works great. Thanks!!
