I have a problem with my space station. one of the caps on the two flashers upper right playfield was melted. I got a replacement and a couple of 25 volt LED's (these are spec'd as 1251 bulbs) After swapping them out and turning the machine on, I smelled that smell we never want to smell. I looked and my new bulbs were smoking. I unplugged that connector for the time being. Swapping out some of the 906 flash bulbs in the top of the back box (letters "TA") I found two partly melted twist sockets.

I tested the sockets and found that I had 50 volts continuous at both sets of sockets. Thus burned out bulbs and melted plastic.

Looking up on the solenoid schedule they are both controlled by solenoid 05C. I notice that the 05A side is a 50v circuit although not used. I checked the diodes on the Aux Power bd, all was fine.

I don't have much of a clue on where else to try to track this down and appreciate any help. I got all else fixed up on this long neglected machine, I just have this one nagging issue.

On the back wall of the cabinet is a circuit board with power resistors for the flash lamps. I would check this first. Look for shorts.

On my machine, one of the power transistors on the cpu board was blown. So someone just cut out the power resistors to prevent the flashers from operating. Only thing was that they cut out more resistors than the one with the problem. So several flashers weren't working. I installed new power resistors then found which transistor was blown, then replaced it.

That back panel is a little confusing.

There are 3 1251's that are controlled by sol. number 15 (see page 28 of manual). The 1251's are on all the time during game play, and they are mounted around the two 89 flashers on the panel. Since the flashers are wired right next to the 1251's they can easily get their wires crossed.

The first thing I'd do is put the PF up on the prop stick, get a mirror and hold it behind the panel, and see if you can see any crossed wires between the 89 flashers and the 1251's.

If you don't find any shorts there, then check out page 28 of the manual, sol. 15 -- it has the connector and circuit board info you need to trace back for troubleshooting the 1251's.

These two fellows have surfaced the other idea I had, that at one time the current limiting resistors on the interface board may have been swapped out or the entire board may have been swapped out. Interface boards are configured for each game and may not be interchangeable between a Space Station and a Taxi, for instance.

You can say that again.
You are right. and they are a pain in the butt to access. I end up dropping the back box and reaching through the hole. I don't know why they made such poor access. probably to use up a spare lamp circuit?

I am a bit confused also. My previous post was mistaken. My over voltage problem was with the 89 flashers in that back panel. The 1251's actually work fine. Those two flashers as well as "TA" in the back box kick on with the 05C solenoid. When I had my CPU board out recently I noticed that there was an ugly hack on the transistor associated with that circuit. The transistor tested bad. I had a few other issues and sent the board out for repair. Chris Hibler did multiple repairs and undercharged me.

Anyway replacing that tip fixed my over voltage problem, that simple, I'm still concerned why the voltage was that high.

Chris, my switch matrix works great now, thanks a ton. My drop targets still don't reset, I'll do another post on that.

Meanwhile, I have to hold a disc golf tournament and chili cook off this weekend.

Thanks fellas, for your help.

So can one look at the catalog number and be confident that we have the right board? or was that number common amongst "similar" boards?

I'm glad you're happy with the work!

If the flasher is working correctly now, I wouldn't worry about it. It was just a hunch to help fix the flasher.

The drop targets probably use opto switches. Place the game in switch test and drop the targets one at a time to ensure each of the register.

Good Luck!
