So I'm having some sound issues with my 1984 Williams #spaceshuttle , system 9.
When you first power it on and start a game everything seems fine sounds good. Less than a minute into gameplay it starts belching out screams and whistles that I've never heard associated with the shuttle machine before, and then goes completely quiet, no sounds at all. Starting another game doesn't help ,no sound. Powering on and off sometimes resets the sound but will still go through the screeching and then silence after a short time.
I'm thinking that it may be the capacitor at C7, the manual points to this cap as a sometime sound related issue. Upon closer inspection of the board, it is located in an area that had previous corrosion problems from old batteries. Would just make sense that it could be failing, yes?
I'd like to tackle the problem myself but I have little experience on the electronic end of the machines. I'd like to think I have enough knowledge to be able to make it better however I'm completely sure I know enough to make it worse. Just wondering if based on the symptoms, I'm barking up the right tree, before I pull the board and replace the cap. Again, not my strong suit. Would appreciate any input or opinions at this point. Thanks.

Not sure about the quality of the boardwork in second picture. Is it sketchy, or genius.

I was getting the sometimes no sound/sometimes crazy sound symptom with a failed 6808 at U11... however mine would always fail as opposed to work intermittently. You can try swapping it with the 6808 at U17. If your game won't boot, its probably the 6808. In my case, even if the game wouldn't boot (the one digit display on the MPU usually showed a code of 7 in my tests), the sound test would still work.

Thanks, I'll give it a poke tonight.

You might be onto something here, swapped u17 with u11 and as predicted machine would not boot. Maybe it's simple enough fix if I can find the part. Thanks

I would expect your sound test to work under this condition (there are two pushbuttons on the MPU, the one on the bottom will play through the sounds). Mine was intermittent, but when I was in this phase of testing, the pin on the connector to my 12v supply was suspect.

Thanks O. Installed new 6808 chip yesterday and the Machine sounds like a dream.
