Quoted from MustangPaul:Did ya win?
i'll let you know after round 2 when i attack the side rails... and every other metal parts.
the worst one will be the lockdown bar receiver, i might get a few punches in the mouth

I'm in your corner with a towel and the squirt bottle. .
Uhhhh that turned out niiiice. Instead of the Shuttle in flight how about a night time launch, when it's about 30ft up off the pad with the flames and roiling smoke. That would REALLY show the POWER of the Shuttle. Sure it would be a bigger sticker but WOW the POWER. Have the image go all the way down to the top of the coin return. Very dramatic. And if you could put it on a high gloss sticker and laminate it. wohza.
lollll, i'm not sure about a sticker on this door, it just feel weird to me, not used to it, this was just a test, the chrome coin entry is not even clean yet.
but i do like the nasa logo a lot.
i'm trying to figure out a few mods and little thing like that.
one thing i'll do for sure is a simple nasa logo in the back, yep in the back of the back box.
Yup you had a busy weekend. Everything look LOADS better. To bad the receiver was so bad and even ate through the zinc coating and pitted the metal, that's gonna be the weak spot and the rust could come back. Are ya gonna coat it with something to prevent that? Very nice job. I should get a buffing wheel.
Quoted from MustangPaul:..... Are ya gonna coat it with something to prevent that? Very nice job. I should get a buffing wheel.
not sure, maybe a light clear coat, i did a few parts years ago similar to this and they still look the same.
buffing wheels are great.
i changed my kit about 2 years ago but i found that the old kit gave me better results if i compare this with my playboy.
Lockdown receiver turned out pretty good imo, wondering what you used to clean that up?
everything coming along nicely, congrats
Quoted from BCpinhead:Lockdown receiver turned out pretty good imo, wondering what you used to clean that up?
all of this.
and sand paper, 100/180/280/400/600/800/1200 grid (lockdown bar)
time and elbow grease.
i did the same process on a bally receiver, with great result. (last pic)
23133.jpg 23134.jpg 23135.jpg 23110.jpgso today i cleared the cab and BB, clear turn out pretty good but..... i don't like the blue color, not dark enough.
so tomorrow i will sand 600/800, i found a darker blue, so we will see how it turns out, i think it's gonna look better.
the good thing is, the cab and BB will be well sealed, it 'gonna be easier to paint and it will be a lot smoother.
the problem is you can't trust the color from the cap of the can, on my first try the color was supposed to be dark blue (krylon) it was more of a medium blue.
second try, the cap was a very dark blue and it came out just perfect.
Quoted from MustangPaul:Much better. Should have tested it first.
yes a test is a good idea but you know how it is, it's never fast enough, when i want something, i want it yesterday.
so today i didn't do anything, i will let the paint dry another day.
might start to disassemble the top side of the playfield.

Once you're done with it, do you then hit it with a quick clearcoat, or some other means of trying to prevent it from rusting again quickly?
It's literally the game that saved pinball.
Williams told the pinball division that if the next game was not an all out hit, they were closing them down for good.
Not only was Shuttle a hit, it was one of the best games of all time.
oh and it's looking absolutely fabulous! i'm doing an s&s and i will now be polishing all the metal...thanks!

yep automotive clear on the cabinet and probably on the lockdown bar receiver.
Did mine a few years back. Feel free to ask questions though yours is already turning out mich nicer!!
Quoted from beatmaster:received a few items for Space Shuttle today.

Very good. I drilled out those wimpy #6 screw holes for big honkin #12's and I thought you were gonna put the new style Stern leg stand offs on.
Quoted from MustangPaul:......I thought you were gonna put the new style Stern leg stand offs on.
well i didn't know if it fits with williams legs (probably does) and since all my early ss games have the same protector i went with the clear ones, i can always change them later on but i think it's going to be fine.
i'm planing on doing a speaker lighting kit for this game (one speaker lolll) and/or will make it fit behind the stainless steel/similar speaker panel.
what do we have here?
new mpu and power supply board from k's arcade.
a very good friend of mine had a space shuttle, he never used it and ask him if i could have them, so in the end they cost me about $100 for both.
i tested them and they work, well.... like new.

Quoted from beatmaster:so this is what the inside of the door looks like when it dismentled. puzzle!
everything is soaking in evapo rust for one day.
after that i might buff and /or re paint some of the pieces.inside door (dismentled).JPG (Click image to enlarge)
Dang, when it's together it doesn't look like that many parts. Can't wait for the after pictures.

WOW did you get a deal there.
so today....
first, i have to say; STAY AWAY from classic arcade's stencils for Space Shuttle... it's crap!
it looks like one of my son's project.
every corners are wrong, lettering looks like it was cut by hand.
no instructions, except put this one first and this one last.
nothing else.
it is so opaque you can't see what you're doing.
and it leaves glue behind.
so if you don't want to fix everything, re-adjust, re-align, buy somewhere else!
when i got this stencil, classic arcade was the only one.
anyway look at the pictures and you'll see what i mean, and i wasn't done fixing everything when i took the pictures.
backbox first stencil (wrong).JPG
cabinet first stencil (re adjusted).JPG
and after 7 hours of fixing, masking and painting, first color is done (red).
looks good, a few touch up and it will be fine.
did i said STAY AWAY from classic arcades stencils for space shuttle?
i'm gonna have no choice with the next stencil, cut everything in pieces so i can make it fit on top of the red, that's how bad this stencil is!

thanks for the kind words, you're not bad yourself.
