6 hours later. a lot of sanding and buffing.

i'm very happy with the result, i can live with a few bumps on the door skin, look much better now.
door frame is very shinny.

i'll let you know after round 2 when i attack the side rails... and every other metal parts.

the worst one will be the lockdown bar receiver, i might get a few punches in the mouth

opinions?

i like the nasa logo in the middle of the coin slots, not sure about a sticker on the door.

what do you think?

Uhhhh that turned out niiiice. Instead of the Shuttle in flight how about a night time launch, when it's about 30ft up off the pad with the flames and roiling smoke. That would REALLY show the POWER of the Shuttle. Sure it would be a bigger sticker but WOW the POWER. Have the image go all the way down to the top of the coin return. Very dramatic. And if you could put it on a high gloss sticker and laminate it. wohza.

#57 9 years ago

lollll, i'm not sure about a sticker on this door, it just feel weird to me, not used to it, this was just a test, the chrome coin entry is not even clean yet.
but i do like the nasa logo a lot.
i'm trying to figure out a few mods and little thing like that.
one thing i'll do for sure is a simple nasa logo in the back, yep in the back of the back box.

#58 9 years ago

so paul, no sticker on the door, i don't like it, it doesn't seems right.

today i'll try to clean and buff the lockdown bar receiver, it looks bad (putting the gloves on).

here what it looks like before.

5 hours later it looks like this.
not perfect, best i could do but at least it's nice and clean.

so that's everything i buffed this weekend.

tomorrow, clearing the cabinet, if i have time.
i'm very curious to see how the cabinet looks like when dry.

Yup you had a busy weekend. Everything look LOADS better. To bad the receiver was so bad and even ate through the zinc coating and pitted the metal, that's gonna be the weak spot and the rust could come back. Are ya gonna coat it with something to prevent that? Very nice job. I should get a buffing wheel.

Quoted from MustangPaul:

not sure, maybe a light clear coat, i did a few parts years ago similar to this and they still look the same.
buffing wheels are great.
i changed my kit about 2 years ago but i found that the old kit gave me better results if i compare this with my playboy.

#64 9 years ago

When I get my garage addition workshop done I'm gonna get a buffing wheel. A light cc sounds good.

Lockdown receiver turned out pretty good imo, wondering what you used to clean that up?
everything coming along nicely, congrats

all of this.
and sand paper, 100/180/280/400/600/800/1200 grid (lockdown bar)
time and elbow grease.

i did the same process on a bally receiver, with great result. (last pic)

Nice job with the metal polising, it's a lot of hard work but the end results look great.

#68 9 years ago

You motivate me Beatmaster!

#69 9 years ago

so today i cleared the cab and BB, clear turn out pretty good but..... i don't like the blue color, not dark enough.
so tomorrow i will sand 600/800, i found a darker blue, so we will see how it turns out, i think it's gonna look better.
the good thing is, the cab and BB will be well sealed, it 'gonna be easier to paint and it will be a lot smoother.

it's little darker in person.

#71 9 years ago

new color, much much better, i don't regret my decision.
darker and a lot smoother and it's not even cleared yet.
so my next step, clear coat... again.

You made the right choice.

#74 9 years ago

the problem is you can't trust the color from the cap of the can, on my first try the color was supposed to be dark blue (krylon) it was more of a medium blue.

second try, the cap was a very dark blue and it came out just perfect.

#75 9 years ago

Much better. Should have tested it first.

#76 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

yes a test is a good idea but you know how it is, it's never fast enough, when i want something, i want it yesterday.

so today i didn't do anything, i will let the paint dry another day.

might start to disassemble the top side of the playfield.

Once you're done with it, do you then hit it with a quick clearcoat, or some other means of trying to prevent it from rusting again quickly?

#79 9 years ago

is this game that good? I have a chance to pick up a non working one for $200-300...

#80 9 years ago

It's literally the game that saved pinball.

Williams told the pinball division that if the next game was not an all out hit, they were closing them down for good.

Not only was Shuttle a hit, it was one of the best games of all time.

#81 9 years ago

oh and it's looking absolutely fabulous! i'm doing an s&s and i will now be polishing all the metal...thanks!

yep automotive clear on the cabinet and probably on the lockdown bar receiver.

#83 9 years ago

cabinet was cleared this morning.

maybe tomorrow at the end of the day or this weekend, if i feel like it, i will try the first stencil (red).
hope the stencil from classic arcade will fit well.

#84 9 years ago

VERY nice. Yeah I'd let that dry REAL good.

#85 9 years ago

Did mine a few years back. Feel free to ask questions though yours is already turning out mich nicer!!

Very good. I drilled out those wimpy #6 screw holes for big honkin #12's and I thought you were gonna put the new style Stern leg stand offs on.

#88 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

......I thought you were gonna put the new style Stern leg stand offs on.

well i didn't know if it fits with williams legs (probably does) and since all my early ss games have the same protector i went with the clear ones, i can always change them later on but i think it's going to be fine.

i'm planing on doing a speaker lighting kit for this game (one speaker lolll) and/or will make it fit behind the stainless steel/similar speaker panel.

so this is what the inside of the door looks like when it dismentled. puzzle!

everything is soaking in evapo rust for one day.

after that i might buff and /or re paint some of the pieces.

what do we have here?

new mpu and power supply board from k's arcade.
a very good friend of mine had a space shuttle, he never used it and ask him if i could have them, so in the end they cost me about $100 for both.

i tested them and they work, well.... like new.

Dang, when it's together it doesn't look like that many parts. Can't wait for the after pictures.

WOW did you get a deal there.

#93 9 years ago

yesterday before i left i sanded the BB and cab with 800 grid so the paint can bite on something, no worries the shine will come back with the final clear coating.
and couple of touch ups, nothing major and masked everything.

sanded before stencil.JPGsanded before stencil.JPG
#94 9 years ago

so today....

first, i have to say; STAY AWAY from classic arcade's stencils for Space Shuttle... it's crap!

it looks like one of my son's project.
every corners are wrong, lettering looks like it was cut by hand.
no instructions, except put this one first and this one last.
nothing else.
it is so opaque you can't see what you're doing.
and it leaves glue behind.

so if you don't want to fix everything, re-adjust, re-align, buy somewhere else!
when i got this stencil, classic arcade was the only one.

anyway look at the pictures and you'll see what i mean, and i wasn't done fixing everything when i took the pictures.

backbox first stencil (wrong).JPGbackbox first stencil (wrong).JPG
cabinet first stencil (re adjusted).JPGcabinet first stencil (re adjusted).JPG

#95 9 years ago

and after 7 hours of fixing, masking and painting, first color is done (red).

looks good, a few touch up and it will be fine.

did i said STAY AWAY from classic arcades stencils for space shuttle?

i'm gonna have no choice with the next stencil, cut everything in pieces so i can make it fit on top of the red, that's how bad this stencil is!
