Looking forward to seeing this available.
Good news all... testing results have been completed and reported to me this morning. Scratch resistance of the Hardtop far exceeds that of the typical clear coat process that has traditionally been done. I have the ATSM results and it is what I was pretty sure of in the first place... but now I have it in writing
Now, we can truly begin! All Space Shuttle customers... T- 6 weeks or less! Yes, yes... the pricing... I will announce soon. I need to confer with PPS to make sure my bases are covered. I think you will all be satisfied with pricing.
I will begin a NEW THREAD exclusively centered on Hardtops and titles on deck soon (maybe today). If I have traded messages with you regarding supplying playfields on other titles... please begin stripping them down and prepping for shipment.

This is fantastic news. Cant wait to install one of these!

Flash has some 15000 unit production run.
I don't get the scratch resistant testing thought?
Why not just have a couple balls rolling around in an automated pf with a couple of pops and rubbers all around it?
Some way to easily get a few months of hard play.
Looks like a cool product though which is how overlays really should be. Imo
I also wish all the vids where in one playlist how did you even do that looks like you have zero content on channel when it's obvious you have a least six of just the pf install.
But nice work make sure to update if you see any issues.

Hi, I'll setup a playlist on YouTube.
Here's the link:
All the videos at this time are marked as unlisted. That is why they don't show up under my profile. I was waiting till I was completed to make them public.
Quoted from StratDoc:Is this available or are we still waiting for final info on how to order?
Still waiting. Probably 3-4 weeks out before orders begin.
It looks very nice from watching the videos.
I have one question: From what I could tell from the last video is it looks like the unit is bolted down tight to the play field by using play field posts as sort of a clamping devise. If I am correct and the poly play field is bolted down tight with no room for movement on the original play field, then how are you compensating for thermal expansion from the heat given off by inserts lights?

Here is why....
That would in no way (with data) tell us how it compares to the hard coat used on modern and restored playfields. We wanted a direct comparison with data, using an ATSM tabor testing method... side by side. That way, we can speak with confidence how it compares to the currently "accepted" method of playfield protection.
Thanks for your interest in the product!

Nice price. I'll definitely be in for one when they're ready.
I would be concerned about the long term outcome of this experiment. In particular I'm worried that eventually the glue would weaken and the protector would pucker/lift upward in the middle of the playfield. Poly-carbonate expands at a much greater rate than wood when heated.
I made my own protector for a Bally Quarterback. Instead of cutting around all of the playfield posts, I used small holes that went underneath all of the posts and reinstalled the posts on top of the protector. I quickly learned why the protectors were designed to go around all of the posts: to allow for expansion. Within minutes of turning the game on, the protector lifted away from the playfield in the middle by at least a quarter inch! This wildly changed the direction the ball moved in during the game. After turning the game off and letting it cool, the protector sat back down as flat as could be.
I thought about gluing it down, but my solution for this problem was to make sure the game/playfield never heated up. Obviously the first step was to replace every bulb in the entire machine with single LED bulbs. Next I noticed that there was a bridge rectifier installed on the bottom of the playfield using the playfield as a heat sink. I unscrewed the rectifier and attached it to a metal heatsink installed on a plastic standoff. After that I unscrewed all of the relays attached to the bottom of the playfield and installed them on plastic standoffs. Finally I installed a forced air cooling system with two 64CFM fans blowing in through the bottom of the machine where the coin box once was. The air blows directly toward the flippers then passes along the playfield and out the top of the backbox. One entrance, one exit. I installed temp probes in the machine and it doesn't heat up more than one degree even after hours of play! The end result is the playfield protector sits flat and plays amazing no matter how long the game is turned on.
My recommendation for anyone who installs this product is to do whatever possible to remove heat from the game and in particular insulate the playfield from heat producing components and boards. I might have gone overboard with the fans, but better safe than sorry. As long as the game does not heat up much during play, there should be nothing to worry about. I look forward to someday trying one of these on one of my machines.
Ahhh, I see the same post here also. Please check the other thread on Hardtops for my response to the concerned John_I.

Excellent. I'll be looking for the announcement.
Quoted from jeffc:comment23 - I might have missed it, but did you have any issues due to hardtop thickness, such as drop target flush height, rollover switch adjustments, etc?
I won't pretend to speak for the OP, but I have made three poly protectors for my pins. I used .030 thickness. The only items I had to compensate for was to use some spacer washers under the flipper bats and I had to make a spacer to fit inside the pop bumpers to raise the skirts an equal amount of .030". I have no conflict with drop targets action, standup targets, sling shots or rebound posts. I may have had to adjust a couple of outlane switches. I am having a small issue with drop target flush height with one pin only; I am going to choose to deal with this by bonding a small flat of plastic to the top of the offending drop target.
How you deal with star rollovers will be your biggest challenge.
Outsidedge congrats on developing this product looks like a winner and a great price , i could have used your product a year ago on my Space Shuttle . It was trashed had it restored , come out great but at a price $$ . Will you be shipping your product over seas when you get more established, all the best .
Quoted from jeffc:comment23 - I might have missed it, but did you have any issues due to hardtop thickness, such as drop target flush height, rollover switch adjustments, etc?
I was expecting to have more issues with than I actually had.
1. A couple of rollover switches needed to be adjust (U-S-A lanes, and one in-lane).
2. I did have the "T" drop target want to get hung up on the hardtop, which required a bit of dremmeling.
3. Some of the larger post holes didn't line up 100% (maybe 1-2 mm off). I did need to take a drill to make the holes a bit bigger.
4. There were also a couple of holes that were not pre-cut. Outside Edge had already fixed this post the beta product.
I used all new pop bumper bodies, skirts, switches, etc. so I didn't really need to adjust for the thickness difference. I just had to adjust my switches appropriately.
Star roll-overs will definitely be interesting in terms of how they will work with the hardtop. Luckily SS doesn't have any.
Just saw this posted to MAACA. I've been waiting a long time for something like this! Man where can I put my name down on a list for when you release Space Shuttle?

I'll be in for one. Will you be doing a flash Gordon play field as well?
ahhhh yes, the great "star rollover affair" .... this IS a challenge, and we are working right now on what we feel will be a great solution. I am hesitant to comment much yet, as I would be speaking too much "theory"...verses trying it. ONLY after we battle the "great star rollover affair" and live to tell the tales will I feel like fireside story telling will be in order. More to come soon on this.

To me the best method is to pop the rollovers out and glue them back in slightly raised. I wish my Atlantis protector was that way.
has this come out ... need the over lay for my space shuttle ..where can I buy one? ..also need the toy if anyone has one
Hi All! Please check www.pinballgifts.com... Space Shuttle is ready! I prefer to sell only 10 or so as we get started to work out any communication/install bugs. As you will read on our site, if you are not ready and comfortable with the method of installation, we suggest you find a qualified helper. Be sure to read our technical bulleten prior to ordering.
We are excited and preparing 5 more titles!
Done! Looking forward to receiving my hard top. Thank you so much for making this happen and adding another option for our hobby.
Seems to me you need to have "thicker" custom star rollovers made. Just the star part. Pop out the old and pop in the new.
Quoted from MrArt2u:Are you still going to be at Pin a Go Go next week? I'd love to see these in person.
I actually am not able to attend Pinagogo... sorry!
Quoted from Travish:Seems to me you need to have "thicker" custom star rollovers made. Just the star part. Pop out the old and pop in the new.
Star rollovers will have a specific set of instructions. We have tested several approaches, and have settled on a solution. It WILL require a small finish router to final trim star rollover holes AFTER the Hardtop is installed... then you simply reinstall the star rollover that was removed prior to hardtop install and set to new height. We tried it, and it works very well with perfect fitment. Again, we suggest someone that is experienced with routers to set bit depth and type to mill the Hardtop out to existing hole dimensions, using a small bit. We will actually suggest a specific bit in the instructions as we get close to shipping a title that includes rollovers.
Thanks for asking!

I'm fairly sure they'd be taking that into account. Space shuttle doesn't have any of those, but Future Spa does, and it's on the list, so I would hope they have some solution in hand so that balls can't get stuck on the edge of a cutout
...nevermind he beat me to it.
And....now I'm not so sure I'll be able to buy a Future Spa hardtop, as I don't have the capacity to do what is being said... *sigh*
Quoted from Yesh23:Where are these for sale at?
For the curious who can't be bothered with a partial checkout, shipping was $18. I thought that was very reasonable considering it ships flat rather than folded. Mine gets here tomorrow. Can't complain about the turnaround at all.
Thanks everyone! We shipped 9 Space Shuttles yesterday. We are delivering (for prototyping) the first Pharaoh tomorrow. Once that one is installed and playing for a while... that one will go live on pinballgifts.com for sale. Soon after.... Wizard, Future Spa, Comet and Taxi.... then onto a new batch (after bugs are sorted out on first 6 titles).
Received mine already!
Was packed very well and appears sturdy.
Hard to see the artwork since there are protective wraps on both the top and bottom. What I can see looks great.
I have installed a few of the clear protectors from playfield-protectors.com
This product looks similar except that it will cover the entire playfield rather than only the areas that the ball rolls on.
The installation will be more work, since everything including the pop bumpers and wooden rails needs to be removed to perform the install.
Will also need to sand the text off the inserts to avoid mismatch between the existing insert text and the text printed on the overlay.
It might be a couple weeks until I have much time to work on it, but it seems like a quality product.
When will High Speed and Time Warp be available?
Got mine today, here is my unboxing.

Looking forward to getting it installed. Came very well packed. Registration of the art seems spot on.
Something that stood out, that may not make an big difference end the end so please don't flame me for being nit picky, is the size of the holes for the wire guides. They seem a little big for the size of the wire.
I know SS doesn't have a lot of wire guides to begin with, but I could see it being a distraction on other games. I am assuming it was done on purpose to account for different playfields and making sure they would fit.
An option on other games might be to instruct the buyer to fill in those holes and then mark where to drill the holes on the playfield. This probably introduces a slew of other contingencies.
