Ive been in the process of restoring my shuttle over the last few months. Stripped the upper playfield , retouched , new graphics in worn areas and 10 coats of varathane . Looking good!! rebuilding the upper playfield including new ramp, shuttle , pop bumper caps, full rubbers, and everything else it might need. Doing full mech rebuilds underneath along with full cabinet restore with stencils and new backglass. Just moved so things are a little crazy but i will be starting a new post with tons of photos very soon

#284 9 years ago

Here are a few pics to wet your whistle 001.jpg001.jpg002.jpg002.jpg003.jpg003.jpg

#286 9 years ago

ok better pics to come but here are few of myt playfield almost done. Still have to rebuild the opo bumpers though. Sorry for the crappy photos but agin better ones to come. This playfield was worn down to the wood in more places than not when i started . I just checked mine and they are indeed 63s

Quoted from winteriscoming:

The worst part is the center Space Shuttle icon.

Mr Pinball Austrailia still has the decals for sale. I bought one about 4 mnths ado for my playfield restore.

#350 9 years ago
Quoted from winteriscoming:

How does putting a decal on end up impacting play?

I know its expensive but when you need something like that to finish a resto it really isnt that much. I refinished the entire playfield with new insert decals and the center decal. I then did 7 coats of clear sanding in between and actually sanding a little bit extra around the decals until everything was nice and level when i was done. It looks really good.

#357 9 years ago
Quoted from winteriscoming:

What kind of clear did you go with?

i used waterbased gloss Varathane.

#359 9 years ago
Quoted from BrewersArcade:

If you haven't upgraded your Space Shuttle to LEDs then maybe this video will change your mind. It really makes my machine pop!

just ordered leds for my resto.

Been real busy with moving and work but have finally had a chance to make some progress . finally have the playfield pretty much finished and starting on the cabinet. Im using Bondo body filler to repair some of the rough spots. Coming along well though.

Quoted from MustangPaul:

You really should take the side rails and head off for painting and stenciling.

Yeah, im not sure what im going to do yet. Still considering it.

#440 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Have you got the thick or thin backbox?

pretty sure its the thin one .

Quoted from toyotaboy:

If you're reluctant to removing the siderails, it's easy (and you're going to want to replace the worn rusty nails anyway):

the rails and nails holding it on are actually in amazing shape with no corrosion or rust so i think im just going to work around them. Im going to remove the head though.

Im wondering if anyone has installed the pinball pro speakers in their Space Shuttle ? If so, how does it sound compared to the originals ? I did the swap on my F14 and was not convinced it was worth the money.

#503 9 years ago

Thanks Mustang. Anyone with feedback on the pinball pros specifically ?

#507 9 years ago

Thanks guys. Im suspect no one has bothered to upgrade to the pinball pros because it just wont make enough of a difference because of the low grade audio source in the machine to justify the cost.

I think your right but a powered sub makes a big dif......if ya like it boomy

Nothing wrong with boomy !!

Hi guys, i just realized my problem with my shuttle toy and why its not working properly. Im missing the front assembly for it.
Im have a new switch assembly but im really hoping someone can help me with the front portion. Does someone out there in pinland have an extra front assembly that i could buy from them or know where i can buy it new ?
First pic shows what it should be and second pic is mine.

Is this the wireform part i need ??? $35.00 after shipping

#516 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

They have got to be kidding about the shipping. It's only in IL. not half way around the world

i know!! How stupid is that !!.

Quoted from goingincirclez:

Have you considered making your own? I've made lots of scale railroad locomotive handrails out of similar (but thinner) wire and it's not too difficult. Costs almost nothing if you take your time and are handy with a pliers. I can try and get you the dimensions of the parts, unless someone else here already has them handy.

The bracket might be trickier since it was originally riveted to the shuttle. Other than that it's just a flat strip of metal bent in a "U" shape with holes at either end. Easy enough to make, though fastening that to the shuttle becomes the issue. There are several ways I can think of; not sure which would be b

If you could give me the dimentions for both the wireform and the bracket that would be awesome! maybe i could make my own. Im pretty handy and could figure out a way to secure the bracket to the shuttle.

#517 9 years ago

I also think im missing something on the upper ramp switch as mine just doesnt look right . If someone had a photo of theirs i would really appreciate it. Here is mine .

#525 9 years ago
Quoted from winteriscoming:

It looks like yours could be a repro since it's so clean

Yes mine is a repro.

Quoted from winteriscoming:

I was kind of wondering if it was a thick enough plastic that the wireform could just be installed without the bracket.

Yeah, the repro might just be thick enough to do this but im not sure i want to take the chance.

Quoted from calvin12:

this looks normal. the ball moves the wire. the wire passes a loop down throughthe hole to activate the switch by lifting the lower long blade to make contact.

Thanks a lot Calvin!

Quoted from MustangPaul:They sell the jig and different wire gauges in a set for $15.

This jig is very cool!

Quoted from ExitWound:I say either make your own wire or buy one
that's close enough to trigger the switch. It really isn't a complex mechanism. Spending $35 on it seems really excessive. Take a paperclip and be creative! Depends on how stock you want it to be. I'd just be careful with the shuttle as it's fragile. As long as the ball isn't launching upward towards the shuttle, it shouldn't receive an impact that would damage anything.

Yep, this is what im going to do.

#542 9 years ago

can anyone confirm if this is the proper single drop target reset plate for space shuttle ?

http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/01-8414

#556 9 years ago
Quoted from ExitWound:

Here's the part numbers from the Williams Blue Catalog Parts List. It *should* be accurate, albeit hard to read.

Thanks so much ! Thats exactly what i needed.

#573 9 years ago
Quoted from ExitWound:

The problem is that they're dirty contacts. I've done everything I can to make them work minus filing them down,

Try using a business card (the paper ones )and rub it between the contacts. Should help.

#574 9 years ago

ok, im close to a fully functional machine. Its been almost a year as ive moved homes and been really busy with work and worked on this when i can. Hope you enjoy. Its been soo much fun working on it.Im feeling really good about how its come along. Its not a full blown pro resto but its about 90 percent nicer than the beast it was when i got it. I want to again thank all the people that have helped over the months and will show full pics of the machine in hopefully a week or so once its up and running. The only thing left is actually a dollar part im waiting on order for the single drop target which is the target reset plate. Soooo frustrating a wait !!!

Yeah you could sell those. Did you use that jig?

Nope, used a small vise and a various assortment of pliers, files, tools etc. Took about 4 tries before i got it right.

#595 9 years ago
Quoted from beatmaster:

nice job, where did you get the stencil from?

classic arcades

#597 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Do you have the thick or thin bb?

Sorry, not sure what bb is ?

#600 9 years ago

Ahh right. lol. I have the thin one.

#603 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

OK your lucky, the stencil is made for the thin one, I have a thick one and if I ever want to do mine it's a major pain to fix and even then it's not correct.

Yeah i saw the earlier thread about that. What a P.i.t.a !!!!

#604 9 years ago
Quoted from goingincirclez:

7) The 3-drop target bank does not reset. It had this problem before, so I inspected and thoroughly cleaned the unit, and it feels much smoother by hand. The coil does fire, but does not push the targets up. The coil seemed OK during the rebuild (sleeve was not binding but I replaced it anyway, coil not scorched, etc).

Check to make sure the reset plate is not bent or missing, check to make sure reset spring is not missing or completely worn out.

#622 9 years ago

Finally got my Space Shuttle down into the mancave. Its finally fully up and running. Needs a little tweaking but should have it fully dialed in fairly quickly.

Quoted from MustangPaul:

That looks great, well worth the effort. Now ya just gotta get some nice cards on the apron.

Yep, just havent decided which ones to print out and use yet. So many really cool ones available nowadays !

#629 9 years ago
Quoted from ExitWound:

I remember reading in some other thread somewhere, maybe a Comet thread, regarding some LEDs that were always lit. Turns out that they were rated at far less than 5V to light, and that the lamp circuits were actually drawing current even when unlit, causing the LEDs to react. The owner had to buy higher voltage LEDs to prevent them from always being on. Don't know if it applies, or if they're even available, but thought I'd chime in.

I think your talki9ng about the flasher circuits. You need to remove one leg of the warming resistors under the playfield and the backbox for them to properly work with leds as they normally provide a small constant current to the circuit to keep the normally incandecent bulbs warm in order to be ready to flash quickly but with leds that little current will keep them constanly lit. I dont think thats what his problem is but im not sure what is.

#633 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Yes that will work but to me the 2 different color temps didn't look good.

Totally agree. The flasher mod is also soo easy !

#635 9 years ago

Im trying to find a new flipper plate for my Space shuttle. I cant find anything for system 9 machines. Only this . Does anyone know if this is the one that was used ? Its for system 6 and 7.

http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/C-8231-R

#682 9 years ago
Quoted from Cheddar:

There's nothing preventing you from using the newer style plate even if you don't do both. The new plate let's replace the coil stop easily and can accommodate both styles of springs.

I'm putting these in my High Speed http://www.actionpinball.com/parts.php?item=FLASSY1_L

I think thats what i might end up going with. I dont like the built in coil stops and want to get away from the conical springs. I assume i can use all the other parts from the original setup ? Everything is new.

Quoted from ExitWound:

I rebuilt my flippers but did not need the bracket. There are rebuild kits for that purpose available all over. I'll keep looking but I don't think much will come up.

Thanks. Yeah, looking up parts for space shuttle can be a frustrating task .

#700 9 years ago

Im considering putting brite caps on my Space Shuttle. Red, white and blue. I think it would really make it pop as opposed to the standard white ones that it has that are quite opaque and dont really allow the light to shine through well. Any opinions ?

Something like this..

#705 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Not sure if the jeweled are taller and wider or not. The cap on the left side has to clear that plastic. Better measure. Jeweled would look better I think.

I tried the jeweled cap from my F14 on my Shuttle and it fits good. Im going for it. I think i will look amazing!!.

#706 9 years ago

Does anyone know if this is the proper kicker part for space shuttle ? Mine is pretty worn and i want to order it with the caps.

doesnt have it listed in the manual. Went to planetary pinball online parts manual but its kinda confusing. I think its the part i need but just wanted to confirm.

#710 9 years ago

Thanks, yeah, should be cool. Promise to post pics when they are installed.

#712 9 years ago
Quoted from ExitWound:

Page 5-10h of the Williams Blue Parts Catalog.

Yep , thats where i found the part number.

Quoted from ExitWound:

But again, buy at own risk. Not my fault blah blah

What , your not going to back up your opinions with say a cash deposit into my bank account if its the wrong part ??

#714 9 years ago
Quoted from ExitWound:

I would if I hadn't already put as much into Space Shuttle to get it playable as I bought my machine for.

Im in the exact same boat. Payed $700.00 for mine, probably have upwards of $600.00 into mine after getting new ramp, shuttle, legs, cab stencils, flipper and pop bumper rebuilds etc etc etc .

#715 9 years ago

Hey MustangPaul, i read a post from you from about 5 or 6 mnths ago about getting a new lift channel and edge trim from Gatecrasher for your CPR spaceshuttle backglass. Did you end up getting it ?

#718 9 years ago
Quoted from goingincirclez:

I couldn't be more pleased. The dot-ring light specks befit the looks of a "space station apparatus" and the cover blends well with them too.

Looks awesome! I ordered mine late last week and based on what i see with yours im glad i did.

#719 9 years ago

Im considering doing red ,white and blue leds in the spinner value inserts. Has anyone tried this? Any photos ?

cool.

Quoted from calvin12:

unlike the garish pop caps.

To each his own right ?

#724 9 years ago
Quoted from calvin12:

I have a new ramp, I hate that it does nto fit right and you need to gouge out your PF to get it to fit. I also really dislike the flaps being installed, I prefer the original mounting.

Wondering if anyone has replaced the slingshot plastics and the small single astronaut plastic . Looks like they crimped the metal tubes on them from the factory and i have no idea how to either remove them and to reuse them on the new plastics. Any advice from someone who has already gone through this ?

#761 9 years ago
Quoted from winteriscoming:

I've done this on my Alien Poker. I drilled out the metal posts from the top to get them off of the original plastics and then the new plastics can just kind of sit on them and get screwed down. I don't think there's a clean way remove and reuse them as they were originally intended.

I believe this basically covers it: http://www.classicplayfields.com/f2khelp.html

Perfect !! Exactly what i needed. Thank you sir.

#763 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Question for you, are the plastics any good? Are you going to save them?

Yep, the old plastics are still in pretty good shape.

Quoted from MustangPaul:

I read on Pinside a while ago that to get them off you could heat up where they come through the plastic with a soldering iron and they would pull out when the plastic got soft enough.

I saw that. My concern would be damaging the plastics . Especially trying to reinsert it into the new plastics. seemd pretty risky to me.

#773 9 years ago

Well i decided to go for it and drill out the metal standoffs from the sling plastics instead of the soldering iron method. Worked really well and im happy to say that all plastics have been changed and no damage done.

#777 9 years ago
Quoted from calvin12:

SUPERBEE said:

I put a new ramp in mine and didnt router it out. Fits fine with no issues.

id like a good pic of that because you would be the only one who has done that as far as I have ever heard.

Not sure how i would take a photo but i did indeed just re and re the new ramp with no issues in gameplay whatsoever. What are the issues that people are having with the new ramps ?

#779 9 years ago
Quoted from calvin12:

w/o routing out the PF the ramps thickness wont allow it to fit flush to the PF. the flap will be above the PF. by routing the pocket under the ramp to go farther back i the PF, not deeper, the ramp can sit flush to the PF. plus the ramp barely makes it between the two entrance posts.

Ok, all i can say is mine plays perfectly with no issues at all. No ball hopping etc. The new ramp did come with a metal transition plate that works perfectly.

#781 9 years ago
Quoted from calvin12:

Then you have the only one.

Hmmm , im interested to understand why ? Whats happens when you guys have tried to install the new ramp without routing ? Will it just not fit no matter what or are there playing issues if you try ?

#783 9 years ago

Yep, i have read this in the past and totally get it. Why the hell did i not have any issues ? Honestly, everything installed great (tight fit mind you) but also plays perfect. Weird !

Quoted from MiamiRedSkin:

Just wondering, what is the going rate for a pretty nice original Space Shuttle with minimal playfield wear?

Well in Canada they are almost impossible to find nowadays so they are going up in price. I bought a beat one and restored it somewhat (look at earlier posts in this thread to see mine) bad shape for $500.00 and after the restore i sold it for around $1800.00 . The guy tried to flip it about 8 mnths later for $3500.00 which is insane !!!! and from what i hear got about $2500.00 for it . He tried to sell it off like he did the work but thats another story. Long story short, i would guess a decent SS is going for about $2000.00 Canadian right now and maybe a lot more because you guys are buying up all the stock here due the the exchange and we dont have much for sale here at the moment but probably around $1500.00 american i would guess.

I'd say bare minimum $1000, you could pay a much as $1600 (non-CPR)

I honestly believe these days are gone ! Sad but true !

Just throwing this out there but is it possible that some wires underneath the playfield are just barely not touching but with the vibration during the game they are randomly touching and shorting out. Might explain it.

Quoted from beatmaster:

if the game has a mylar good chance the playfield is in decent shape (better than most outhere), i'll say grab it if thats the case.

Just keep in mind that the mylar on the Space Shuttle is usually very thing compared to the mylar used on say system 11 machines and up. Its not easy to remove but it will come up. I removed it on my space shuttle using heat and went very slow.

#1230 7 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

How much mylar bubbling over the inserts did you have

Not much if any at all from what I remember.

#1232 7 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Ah you were lucky, if there's bubbling that glue has turned hard as a rock and is impossible to get off without taking the insert decal with it and probably some paint around the insert too. That's what happened to a BOP pf I have. The inserts really should be taken out, sanded flat and put back in.

I did have a lot of playfield wear to begin with in areas where the mylar was worn away. (it's not like the thicker mylar in most machines) and I did remove all inserts for leveling and regluing before applying all new insert decals. Photos in past posts in this thread.

I hope to be joining all of your on this epic mission soon... I have the chance to get a SPACE SHUTTLE for $1,000 (or less), the only issue is that the player 3 and 4 displays are out...

If its in decent shape thats a steal. Post pics if you get it !

Quoted from comment23:

1. The machine was LED'ed. But it seems that some LEDs (in U,S,A lanes) have some weird flickering issues. I know that sometimes LEDs do strange things in machines. Is this once of the cases?

If i recall when i put leds in my shuttle there was no need to cut grounds on any warming resistors. (machine is gone now so i cant look). Its possible that the leds in your machine may be low quality. Im pretty sure i just put in premium non ghoasting leds from cointaker and i was good to go but again, dont quote me on that.

Yep, and its a shame too. Soo many Space Shuttles with trashed playfields still out there.

#1312 7 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Yes it is a shame, but there just aren't enough people out there that will spend $750-$800 for a game that's worth $1400 tops and for sure not many of us would go balls out like Beatmaster did. His is the nicest SS on the planet.

True and True.

I'll have to get my volt meter out tonight after work and check for continuity with the switch themselves, and check the wiring diagram to see if the two ejects are connected together somewhere, maybe a wire off

This is what i would do first for sure.

Wrong owners club. You are in Space Shuttle, not Space Station , so it might be better off to see if there is a Space Mission owners thread.
