I would replace the main capacitor and any capacitors related to the sound. Actually, I'd probably recap the whole machine just for good measure. But that's the kinda guy I am.

Quoted from jetmechinnc:

So, I verified all screws are installed in boards in the backbox. Changed out the power cord plug end to a proper 3 prong connector. Still no change. If I turn down the volume so I can’t hear a buzzing in the speakers, you mainly just hear all the popbumpers etc. I do have to turn the knob up almost all the way to get good sound, is this normal? Is there something I may need to replace on one of the boards? Or just buy a new board if available? Or that huge capacitor in the back box? Not sure. The current speakers are Pinball Pro that sound great, it’s just that the game during idle/attract mode has a buzz sound. Maybe it’s just normal noise due to the transformer in the cabinet being it’s a 1984 pin?!? Don’t remember much noise from my old EM pins when I had them.

Quoted from MoSeS_1592:

This is a general system 9 question, but what is the large 30,000uf 25vdc capacitor mounted to the floor of the back box for and how important is it to replace the 35 year old original? See photo.[quoted image]

Not exactly sure what it's for, but it's always good to replace old capacitors. I replaced mine with this board that replaces the capacitor and also adds 2 fuses in the 18 volt controlled lamp and 34 volt solenoid circuits to prevent possible fire hazards if the bridge rectifiers should fail.

Quoted from KSUWildcatFan:

Just brought my SS home this week. Hardtopped, new plastics, comet LEDs, Rottendog LED displays, etc. Liking it a lot! Had a couple of switches to adjust (one over active sling, a pop that wasn't registering on all parts of the skirt). It's pretty much good to go now but I've got two issues: the left flipper I think the EOS is wrong because it seems no matter what I do, I can't make it up the ramp. The right flipper feels like maybe it's got some binding, either from a bad sleeve or being too close to the bushing, but it can make it up the ramp at least. The other issue is driving me absolutely bonkers. The airlock was closing too much and interfering with the inner lane so I took it partially apart and reassembled, and now it's not always even engaging. Clearly I need to do as Vid's guide says and take the entire assembly out to clean and tighten, but I can't get to the damn set screws. Any tips?[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Maybe time for a flipper rebuild? New linkages and EOS switch and sleeve may help.

Quoted from Apinjunkie:

Here are some questions for any shuttle heads who have installed a hardtop on their machine. I know they look impressive right after the install how are they holding up after you've had them in there for a while? Was there anything during the install you would do different if you had it to do over again? I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on one and I've set aside some time in the spring for the install. Any tips or tricks, Do's or don'ts would be appreciated.

I don't have one on my game, but I went to look at one to buy that had one installed. I didn't buy it mainly because of the hardtop. It was coming up under the ramp area creating a hump and the holes that were cut out to match the holes on the playfield did not match up well. This could be a result of a poor installation, but it also deterred me from buying a hardtop for my machine. It also looked a little cheap and plasticy to me. Others may have had a different experience.

Quoted from MinturnMiler:

I'm in need of some advice concerning my Space Shuttle. My machine is grounded. The lights for the scores and credits along with all the back panel started to dim and then I lost all lights on the back panel. I checked all fuses, they were all good but I'm not sure where to start checking voltages. The LED diagnostic display showed no problem but after I metered the voltages, the LED test display went dark. I've been looking for a local repair person but no luck yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I would check the voltages out of the power supply board first. The power supply board could probably use a rebuild and cap kit. I had similar issues and rebuilt the power supply board and that fixed the problem.

Quoted from Charles_Kline:

I’m getting a cat piss smell I didn’t notice last night...
[quoted image]

Hey Charles, looks like you've got some work ahead of you. But nothing you can't handle given some of your other projects. I still think you got a decent deal on this one. Maybe the cat piss smell is the wood used in the cabinet. I get that smell from certain woods I've come across. I used a flat clear coat spray on the inside of my Centipede that got rid of a strange smell after I got it home. Worked great. Can't smell a thing. I think one of the hardest parts to find was the ramp, so it's nice you got one with this deal. These have been harder and harder to find lately and they tend to go quickly when they come up for sale.
