Hey everyone, new space shuttle owner here. I’m really interested in doing a hardtop for the game but my playfield appears salvageable for someone with talent. I’m considering picking up a rough playfield and using that as the hardtop diner and selling off my playfield.
I’m curious what others think. Is it worth the effort just to put an OK playfield out there for restoration or if I should write mine off and use it as the hard top downer.
Is there even a market for ok SS playfields?

Hey guys I want to clarify. I’m saying this playfield would go to the greater good and be offered up for someone to restore. I’m looking to pickup something that is too far gone to restore and hardtop that... my big question is should I go for that option or locate someone who can help with the artistic portion of a playfield restoration. My detailed painting skills aren’t that great and I really want this game to be the best in my collection

Good advice all. I’ll stick with what I’ve got and hunt down a decal for the top USA... portion.
It’ll be a while until I get it up and running while my MPU is out with Jerry Clause. In the mean time I’m gathering up all of the goodies to make this really shine. I’m planning on LEDs but I’ve never used them in a pin before.
Any recommendations for the type of LED? beatmaster has a very fine example and I’d be proud to have mine glow similarly.
Similarly has anyone come across a recommended bulb color guide?

Hey guys, deep into the playfield here. Anyone have Hogh Quality scans of the playfield? I’d like to make some waterslide decals to fix the missing paint.
First looking for the top “USA Advanced X Value” then near the pop bumpers.

Quoted from dzorbas:

I have my hardtop sitting in a box waiting for install. I can scan the areas you are looking for and send them to you if you can't work with what beatmaster sent you.
Just let me know.

dzorbas thank you for the offer. I appreciate any help.
I’ve circled the areas I’ll be working on. I’ve also got ghosting on the inserts but those may be something I can correct with a clear coat.

Quoted from Pinmasher:

Hard top done! Love it! All new parts minus apron targets and metal posts will be doing those soon. Cpr backglass is beautiful I need to trim my speaker panel a hair to drop it down a smidge. Have stencils for the cabinet but waiting for the 5 feet of snow in front of my garage to go away and some nice weather.

Looks fantastic! Great job
Hop to get mine looking close to this

I could use some recommendations on next steps. My displays dropped with f1 blowing. I went ahead and rebuilt the HV section of the power supply then plugged the display back in without taking voltage measurements.
Shorted the score display on the display board pretty bad when turning it on.
I’m not sure if it caused it but in diagnosing the HV portion of the power board I found I’m getting -132v instead of the proper -100.
I also suspect I’ve got bad glass but I’m not sure how to test it without the display board running.
My hope is to fix the power board before replacing the display board but I’m stumped on what went bad.
This is what I’ve got going on the system 9 power board: marked up with voltages and transistor model #s
You can also see what happened to the display board

Update: installed a new Q3 transistor and voltages came into spec.
Made the mistake of plugging the display board in and fried my Q1 transistor.
I’m worried that the fried display board is a result of a blown numeric glass.
I couldn’t find anything about testing them.
Any recommendations on how to identify faulty numeric displays?

To eliminate the speaker buzz you may also want to check the grounding on the MPU.
Ed Cheung documented this on his site: Search for "Grounding the CPU board"

Quoted from Bobosika:

#7 bonus Light stuck on. Bonus light #4 and #7 don't light when spelling space shuttle. Replaced 1j7 connector. Lamp matrix works in test mode. Checked bulbs and sockets. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a very similar problem and could also use some help:
My Lamps for Stop & Score and bonus 1 - 7 aren't working. I confirmed wiring is good from the lamps through to 1J7-8 (Yellow-Violet). Can't really figure out what's going on from there.

Does anyone have a good recommendation on how to test the output from pin 1J7-8 or checking U14 pin16?
