Having an issue and wanted to see what you you guys think about it. A few times I've seen the 3X light up when it's not supposed to. Was lit up about halfway. Now today, I just saw the spinner 2000 do the same thing, at the same time as the 3X light. Kind of lit up halfway and flickering a bit. My wife mentioned that she's also seen the Shoot Again light (in the playfield) do the same thing, along with the others. Now, I don't think it is a ghosting issue, as I have a non-ghosting LED in the spinner 2000 light (my 3X light is just a regular LED; going to replace the rest of the LEDs with non-ghosting ones here real soon). I don't think that'd explain it.
I was looking at the Lamp-Matrix table and see that the 3X and Spinner 2000 lights are in the same row, although the Shoot Again one is not, however it is in the same column as the Spinner 2000 light. Could these all be related since two are in teh same row and two in the same column, with one being in both? Also, my MPU was just rebuilt/repaired at K's Arcade. Do you guys think it could be an issue with the 1J6-2 & 1J7-6 transistors (is that what they are?) Maybe just dirty/corroded contacts in the bulb sockets? Just wanted to see what you thought and how I could test it to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like what mine was doing.

Check my MPU repair log a could posts back. (Probably on the previous page)

OMG, can you share info, pics, etc. on how to do this? I would love to do this. I hate that left outlane so much. One thing that just kills me over and over again is if you hit the "T" drop target with the left flipper any sort of hard, it instantly hits the left outlane and it's all over.

The death shot! I've had my shuttle over 20 years and it always comes back to... The death shot! I will finally have some time soon to install the new drop target designed by
kryss63 and printed for me by
@SkyKing2301. I can't wait to hammer that center shot without fear.(without having to add a post to the outlane) Thanks fellow shuttle heads, what a great community.

Hi, new space shuttle owner and I have a question about the cabinet artwork.

My question is, there are two versions of cabinet artwork I've seen the original and this improved version. Do you guys think it will greatly devalue my machine if I install the newer artwork? The original artwork is trashed. I'm also installing a hardtop on the playfield as that is in a bad way as well.

Also: The link on post 1 to the backglass is broken.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

My opinion is the "improved" artwork is horrible.

I don't care for that art package at all and I wouldn't buy a game with it, but if it is your aesthetic go for it.

I think you mean 2 art packages, the original and the ugly downgrade one. I can't think of anyone who would want to willingly buy one looking like that. Of course you are hard topping it so all bets are off, its just going to be a nightmare machine.

#3907 2 years ago

Putting vinyl artwork on a cab that was originally stenciled is not the way to go IMHO. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the 'improved' art but it looks cheap.

Stencil is the way to go!

#3908 2 years ago

I like the "new" art, but not on this machine for me personally. SS is a classic game from an era of simpler stenciled cabinet art, and the "new" graphics look like a 90s or newer style design. Would go with the stenciled original look if you plan to sell the machine ... but if it is a keeper, heck go with what YOU like, that is all that matters! Hardtop if done properly to me increases the value much more than a roached out playfield (lots of discussion and varying opinions on that ... but YOUR opinion is what matters). Regardless, enjoy SS, what a fun and classic game. And I really would like to see the "new" art installed on an actual machine, so post some pics if you go that route, actually might turn out better than expected!

#3909 2 years ago

I’m curious why anyone would think less of a hardtop. It should last the life of the machine, probably longer then a new playfield. I kind of understand if it was an overlay, but even then if installed right and given a few coats of clear it should be very nice and last a long time.

#3910 2 years ago

I see your point, I just thought people would be more open to it considering the back glass is graphically intense. I’m going to ponder on it. I may commission a hybrid side art something in the middle between the original look and something a little more graphical. I guess if I sell it I could offer to paint it if it was a deal breaker.

I have Hardtops on three of my games, including my Shuttle. I love them since they vastly improved games with semi-trashed playfields.
There are folks who swear that the games play differently since the ball travels differently on the "plastic" surface instead of "wood".
I'm not a good enough player to be able to say for certain, but I think they play great.

a hardtop is an overlay, a much nicer one than normal but its still an overlay. They play oddly, they look odd where the cutouts are and the games are made of wood, not plastic for the playfield (with a few notable exceptions). I'd take a standard overlay over a hardtop because if I really wanted to I could remove the overlay and fix the playfield. Thats not an optiopn after you destroy the art to add a hardtop.

Looks fantastic on my Firepower and I think it plays a little faster, which isn't a bad thing on older games in my opinion.
And spending 1k on a new playfield for a game that you can only sell for 2 to 2500 in the future isn't the best financial choice sometimes.

I don't think that's correct. You can easily remove a clear playfield protector, but an overlay is permanently installed and generally involves sanding the playfield first. Yes. Hardtop is permanent, but so is an overlay.

its not incorrect at all. the adhesive on a "standard overlay" is much easier to remove. The hardtop adhesive is first off, much stronger and secondly there is no art left to repair even if you got it off.

Is that a rubber bumper on your left outlane?

It is. It bothered me that the ball picked up scratches bashing into it.

As my cabinet is bleached out very much... the red is light pink now....
I was thinking to redo the complete cabinet, repainting it and re-designing the outside with big custom decals ...
...maybe using a nice Spaceshuttle photo with added "SPACE SHUTTLE" Text and Williams Logo....
...but the cabinet would look completly different...
What are your opinions? ... is it a sin/sacrilege destroying the original artwork....?
Or could this be "cool"?
Here are a few rough ideas I have.... not the final decal... just for checking out how it might look like!

One remark for stencil or stickers, be carreful with the width of your backbox. There is 2 models !

Finally had the chance today to install the new center drop Target designed to reduce the air balls to the outlane. I needed to do a little prep work to the new drop Target but nothing major, less than 5 minutes with the Dremel tool and to drill a couple pilot holes for some screws. The print is a little large on the top (back side of Target) I was able to remove about an eighth of an inch of material with a Dremel tool for a perfect fit. Full disclosure, my shuttle is hardtoped so it may just be that that Gap was a little smaller because of the hardtop. Overall I would recommend these to anyone who's thinking about it. They're a game changer, after about a dozen plays of attempting nothing but center shots I'm happy to report not one of them was a death shot. I thought I had a spare satellite sticker but no dice,so now to track down one of those.

I placed a couple flat washers between the underside of the playfield and the drop target mounting bracket. It created enough of a downward angle to stop airballs.

Hi to everyone in this club. I just bought a Space Shuttle as a project, it comes complete but most of the screws are missing. Could someone tell me what screws it uses? The ones on the posts are I think are the typical of this games like 6-32 x 1/4, but I don't know what I should use to secure the ramp. In pictures I see that they are black and small. Does anyone know the measure? Thanks

Thanks Wesley. That one is to fix the ramp to the playfield. But I'm also looking for the screws that are further up the ramp. For example, the ones that allows it to be fixed to the metal posts. Are very small screws I think.

Installed the MRS from M&M Creations in a Space Shuttle to replace the upper ramp switch. I had all kinds of problems adjusting the original switch to work properly. Either it wouldn't work or it would catch the ball rolling under. I believe my original switch was broken and having a hard time finding a replacement I talked to Matt and he fixed me up with what I needed. It works perfectly. Great product, great service, great communication, and fast response. This works so well I may replace the shuttle switch as well when I swap the playfied along with a new ramp and shuttle.

Question about sound and speech ROMS. I have sound rev 3, and speech Rev 1 installed. I have seen some speech rev 2 ROMS installed in some machines. What's the difference between the rev 1 and rev 2 speech ROMS?

I'm in the process of putting a Space Shuttle back together that I got in boxes. Does anyone have a picture of the tinned GI playfield wiring that they'd be willing to share? I found one in the gallery for this thread but it looks to missing sections of the wiring.

Or better yet a good set of teardown pictures?

New member of this club.
Machine powers on with GI working.

This is my first Williams syst 9 machine so no idea where to look first to tackle this problem.

Cabinet in decent shape. Backglass in bad condition. Playfield seems ok.

Great find. A few things up front, do you have three balls in the machine? What number shows up on the LED indicator light on the back box? And the batteries, looks like some have been in there in the past that got roached out. You probably have some alkaline damage on that board, around the battery holder that may give you some issues right out of the gate. This is a great title and one worth the effort to bring back to life.

#3933 2 years ago

Hello,

Received the machine today and inside it is a mess.
Cut wires, hacked connectors.
Board has also acid damage and a lot of corosion on it.

Does anybody of you have a lot of pictures of the inside of the cabinet with the wiring, connectors, etc?

I hope it can be revived.

Does anyone know what the proper screws are that holds the apron in place? Mine has some random screws that apparently came loose and the apron gouged the playfield in the lower right corner. Pretty pissed about it. My machine already had a gouge there but I think it recently got a bit worse as I didn’t know or see that it was loose. I was thinking a machine screw with a nylon nut might work, at least for the left side since there’s access there, but not sure what to do for the right one.

Hello,

I've found this sort of connecter in the bottom of my Space shuttle pinball with some cut wires.

The red one is still connected to the chime.

Also 3 connectors in the bottom where one has 2 wires cut off,

Could somebody provide me some close-up pictures of those wires and connectors in a working machine please?

Thanks

Hi again everyone! Still enjoying my beater of a SS, but have encountered a new issue. I tried searching but didn't find any with this particular problem so here goes.

Every once in a while it feels like one of the pop switches gets stuck or something; the game plays the pop trigger sounds several times in rapid succession and the scores go up... and up... and up... like, 10,000+ points will be added in the course of a couple seconds. I'm all about high scores, but I don't want "performance-enhancing switches" tarnishing my personal bests!

So I guess before I bug my technician with another email I thought I'd ask you folks- what switches underneath the playfield do I need to tweak, and where can I find them? Usually they're just sticky, but sometimes they'll also trigger when I press the flipper buttons. Don't know if that's telling of a different issue, or if it just triggers the switch from the flipper vibrations? No idea...

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any guidance you might be able to provide.

I would check your spoons. Under the pot bumper assembly the pop bumper skirts come to a Long point, that point ends at what looks like a spoon attached to the switch stack. That point needs to be dead center of the spoon. Can be tricky to adjust and very sensitive. That spoon may just need a good cleaning as well as dirt and debris over time can affect these as well. Luck with it.

Hi, here is a picture of the power supply cables in my Shuttle. I'm afraid the cables/connectors in the other pitcures are "customized" as I cannot find them in my Shuttle, so probably the only way is to deep dive into the schematics and check the cables one-by-one to undo this mess...

Thanks.
I already found this inside my cabinet. They installed a ticket dispenser in it and I assume they tapped it via a custom connector on a brown-yellow wire.

text on playfield : Drop Targets open Airlock
text on playfield : MARK (signature)

On my old playfield, text is cream white but I don't know if it's due to the 40years old or not.
I found the cream white color also on all the painted area under the ramps... So I don't know...

I start the restoration and I want to put the original color.
I bought a decal set on an Internet website. White color is in perfect white but printing quality is poor so it isn't a reference for me.
The best way is to put those decals on the garbage and to rebuilt all myself

With a friend, we have rebuilt all the decals I need but I wait your answers before printing.

Thanks in advance !

Here's a video of Lit Kit Flippers installed on Space Shuttle. Turn also to about 1:12 to see the multi ball flashing effect.

I've joined the club a few weeks ago, lots of content here to read. Got a refurbished 100% working system 9 mpu at Pinfest, really excited to get this game going

Who makes those clear ramps and are they still for sale?

Quoted from Toine79:

Larry at starship fantasy made those clear ramps. He's been sold out for a while and says one day he may do another run. Reach out and pester them, I do a couple times a year. Missed my chance when they were first available.
