Quoted from OlliG:

Progress Update with my repair....
I have Sound AND Speech now !!! Yehaaa!!!
The problem was with the speech board. Pin 4 on the Op.Amps MC1458 did not get the -12V. The holes in the board of these chips are not connected through (from top to back side of the board. so if you solder the chip or socket from below.... the -12V arriving at the top side of the board are not reaching the pin...
So I had to solder the socket pin from above to...
Result: Loud and nice speech
To find this out drove me crasy... I never imagined that the upper and lower side of the board were not connected through!!!
Maybe my board is a faulty one... it is one of the old boards that dont have the jumper for the different Eprom types....
Last remaining problem is the socket of U14 that has to be redone.... I still sometimes have the freezes and the game would shut down...
If I slightly press on U14 it comes up again!...

Nice detective work. Your saving yourself a fortune by doing the work yourself, I'm jealous.

#1802 5 years ago

Finally done... I resoldered and rebuild all traces around U14 and finally everything the 100% working!!

.... what a great game!!!

So happy to have at back from the dead!!! (Only GI was lighting up at the beginning!
It had about 10 different mostly electronic problems.... all solved!

Nice work, Olli!
Congrats!

Has anyone tried to light up the the eject shields where the balls lock in? I thought about putting some red flex lights in there tie them into either the GI or the flashing LOCK insert light.

I did it and used a 2 head led flex. Very easy to do.

I found a Craigslist ad with some Space Shuttle parts so I thought that I would share:

I took some inspiration from this thread and created my own Nasa-Speaker-Panel.
Mine is made of black satin plastic and wood...
I did the design with PaintShopPro and the Lasercutting was done by http://plexilaser.de/

Added an Arduion Uno and lots of Neo-Pixel LEDs and programmed a little 10s animation that loops endlessly...

Nasa-Speaker-Panel.

Great job!! I love my metal speaker panel mod, but having it lit up like yours would be awesome!! Great job. Always amazed on how people can figure out another way to make an old pin look modern and fresh. Well done

Happy to join the Space Shuttle owners club... I have it in my place in Cape Canaveral. Just updated all the rubbers to silicone and added LED's looking forward to going back through the treads to see what mod's everyone has done. Any good shooter rod idea's?

Welcome to the club. Beatmaster makes a cool shooter housing light up if your interested and I make the Leg Lights.

The current Lightshow...

#1817 5 years ago

Working on the leg lights right now....
Complete DIY
I used a hot air gun to bend the Plexiglas...

Added my beloved Neopixel and connected them to the same Arduino that animates the Shuttle ....
It's fun to program different "lightshows"....

I'm unsure if I should do all 4 legs or just the 2 front legs?
Any opinions?

Brought this one home last night...the quick look i had at the sellers site, it looks in very nice condition.
Playfiel has some small wears around pop bumpers, ramp entry and a few little blemishes.
All the pcb's look like new and the side arts are on the cabinet almost perfect, on the head there are some small dents and scratches.

Paid only 350 USD for it, so i guess it was a good buy....oh, and yes it starts up and is playable.

nice, you got a deal, it should be a $1000 game in that shape. With the stupid money in this hobby now, there are people who would pay 2k.

Welcome to the club, that was a great price. When you get it set up take some pictures with the glass off.

At 350, that's a steal, especially in that condition!!! Congrats, welcome to the club!

#1822 5 years ago

Yes, i had not very good pictures of it before i went there, but it was only a 1 hour drive...so not a big risk at all.
Will do more pictures of it once it is set up...but i guess i will need some time as i'm out of space atm.

Anything i should take care of it first as a advice?
Is this coin door original, as most of them i have seen on pictures have a blank metal one.
Also are the wood rails on the left & right normal in plain wood color and not in black?

You got an awesome deal.

I would swap out the balls, wax it, and put some new rings if it needs it. Mine were dry rot and I swapped to clear silicone.

Mine has the wood rails. I think some people have repainted theirs black.

No, that does not look like an original coin door.

#1824 5 years ago

Pretty sure the original rails were cheap wood wrapped in cheap faux wood printed plastic. I would consider black painted wood an upgrade mod!

#1825 5 years ago

Yeah, i guess black wood rails would look much better on it.

Wtf, are you blind?

It's the camera... the rest of the room was completly dark... hard conditions for a camera to get the exposure right

The stadium lights in the back are bright, but you cant see them, when you are playing, as they are hidden under this wooden "back rail"....

Happy to see I'm not the only one with Lego spaceship toppers. My seven year old made one for me about a year ago. He occasionally steals parts from it to build other stuff.

#1830 5 years ago

Does anyone have one of these plastics lying around? I'd like to get one since the plastic on my machine is missing. Let me know if you have any leads.

thanks,

I am parting out a space shuttle. I bought it to restore but the playfield was water damaged. Plastics, ramps, and mechs look to be good. Anyone looking for parts?

Another fun addition to my Space Shuttle. (Does not affect ball launch.) In an imaginative way, you're "removing" the RBF tag when you pull back the plunger to launch the ball!

Has anyone in this club installed a new backglass from either CPR or Planetary? I may need one for a game I’m picking up. I’m wondering how the quality compares to an original

better than a bad one, but over blue if i recall correctly.

Yeah I forgot I read that about CPRs. I see Planetary ran some new and improved and was really curious about it

Yes, I just did, from Planetary and you can't tell the difference.

Glad to know. Thanks

I just acquired a new Space Shuttle and I think the coil stops are too tall because the flippers just don’t have the travel I felt my old Shuttle had. The ramp just seems un natural to hit. Does a fellow owner know the height of the stop? These look replaced and not original

There is no way they are original on a 35 year old game, they probably have been replaced a few dozen times.

Your old ones were probably so worn that the flippers had WAY too much range of motion.

The new ones should be 7mm tall

#1843 5 years ago

Thanks. In my post I said these were replaced and not the original ones. They are brand new

#1844 5 years ago

The Shuttle flippers I rebuilt on my old game had better travel after rebuilding them than these on this game

#1845 5 years ago
Quoted from patrickvc:

We get 3 travel factors.

1. The length of the coil stop

2. The length of the plunger

3. If the little rubber bushing is installed on the flipper bracket

It's possible that your last rebuild kit had the wrong size parts included, that happens to me at least once a year.

Hey All,
I'm reporting for duty! I have some issues to resolve. Three quick questions:
1. What is the L metal bracket in the back left for?
2. Gate on right side of ramp. It's missing and I don't see a switch. Do I need it?
Thanks All!

[quoted image][quoted image]

1. To damage your plastics and ramp every time you lift your play field. jk. It is meant to hold the playfield down, particularly when you are moving it I believe. I took mine off.

2. Yes. That switch sets off multi-ball and the stop-n-score. It looks like someone cut into your ramp and put another switch on there.

#1848 5 years ago

Thanks AMBoggs I forgot my third question! What is the best way to prop up the playfield to work underneath? A picture would be super awesome. I have a trough switch issue and I can't solder with one hand!

#1849 5 years ago
Quoted from ChrisPINk25:

What is the best way to prop up the playfield to work underneath?

Carefully slide the bottom forward far enough that it will rest leaning on the backbox.

#1850 5 years ago

That "L" bracket is supposed to have a rubber on it. They are available from various suppliers, Marcos for sure. Looks like it's for playfield alignment but I'm not sure why it is needed. I use a 2 x 4 to prop up the playfield if I'm not resting it on the backbox.
