Hi,
in the back box of my space mission there are two foam-pieces to the left and to the right.. Most likely they have been added for noise dampening. Can anybody tell if this is original stuff? If yes, why was not anything added to the top of the box?
Also on the closing metal lid there is some material. Is this original?
Best
Patrick

Definitely not original. None of the pinball manufacturers ever put material like this in their EM games.

That’s a new one to me. Sound dampening or thermal insulation?

Hopefully not thermal. As far as I'm concerned, the last thing you want to do is trap heat inside the head of a pingame.

Many heads have vent slots to allow the heat from the lamps to escape. Heating up the back side of a screen-printed glass can accelerate the process of detaching the ink from the glass, so not really something you should be trying to encourage.

Dude that last one on the metal doors looks like asbestos

...sure does. friable by the looks of the deterioration.

Ups, so better get rid of this stuff? Is there an easy way to learn whether it's asbestos? So normally the metal part is blank metal?

I didn’t say it was a good idea!

Maybe this was someones idea to compensate for keeping it in an unheated garage.

Bad roads are paved with good intentions!

Yes in every game I’ve been inside.

Many parts were run down, but the backglass is in good shape. So at least it did not harm the backglass. Will not be easy to separate the material from the metal. How can I know it's asbestos?

There are many asbestos test kits on the market. Here's one:

Added water to the material and split it from the metal. Took it to the local civil waste depot of my home town. Paid the fee for asbestos (which was pretty cheap: 60 Cent). Whether it really was asbestos, I don't know. At least its gone now ! Game Over for it! Thanks to All!
