Hi guys
I’ve got a space invaders I’m trying to restore
So far I’ve got an alltek mpu
Changed some connectors just
Checked fuses ,
Had all the boards tested working except sound board

What’s happening is ,
It’s turning on
Booting up and giving 7 flashes all be it the green lit is slightly dim when its went through the 7 flashes .
I can start a game.
It will play with flippers working and solenoids

The problems
The lights are just staying lit ,well some of them
They aren’t going through any sequence
I’ve tested for 5 v at points 2 and 3 on lamp driver board
I’d previously test the voltage on rectifier board ,right through to mpu
I’ve lost all the score boards lighting up
No sound ,though the sound board is one board that hasn’t been tested properly

Any likely causes or help would be appreciated ,the machine had been stored for years and wasn’t in a great state
Those connectors are a real pain if anyone could point me in the direction of any I’m particular that would cause the above problems

#3 5 years ago

There’s no glow from the bottom of score boards
Nothing from moving wire at hinge ,but top connector is suspect at best Id guess ?
I done a reset there ,but still the same

So this rectifier has fooled me
U.K. machine by the way
Are these results pointing at a new rectifier ?
That fuse is there and working that was mentioned too ,just hard to see in pic
I’m now getting
Test point 1. 3.8
2. 140
3 6.4
4 4.65
5 24,5

Before I was getting
1 7.0
2 227
3 13
4 6
5 39

#8 5 years ago

Fuse is not missing as stated above

#9 5 years ago

Unless there are meant to be 2 fuses on that board ?

#11 5 years ago

I thought so .yes it’s there .the glass bit hasn’t shown very well in the pic and I can see why you might think it’s missing
I’ve tested it and it’s fine

#13 5 years ago

Thanks for the detailed answer
Let me make sure I’m getting the basics right .
When I’m testing the voltages ,is there a ground anywhere I should use or just the metal of machine ?

#14 5 years ago

The voltages on he rectifier board that is

#15 5 years ago

Since I’ve re seated those connectors on the power board a few times ,a few things have happened
Game won’t start now
Solenoids aren’t going
At one point I heard a hum from the speaker (ive lost that again )
I also lost the lights round the edge of backglass ,but I’ve got them back now

#19 5 years ago

the more I scratch the surface the more I realise I’m out of depth and this may be a candidate for breaking
First of all someone has cut the ground strap various places I assume ,I was using that ground strap for my readings 2nd time ,have totally forgot how I was reading them before
There is a burnt out connector on the rectifier board and someone has hacked a big wire in there
Other connectors look ok there
The score boards where working when I got it .about the only thing lol

#20 5 years ago

Il get some voltage readings soon
Didn’t realise he sd board and rectifier were different
I’m assuming this won’t work without ground straps ?

#22 5 years ago

Now this was strange ,the metre touched somewhere near point 3 or moved the point itself a bit on the rectifier board and all the lights got very bright and a bit of a hum from speakers ?

#23 5 years ago

Now she’s not booting ,6 flashes just .

#28 5 years ago

Some brilliant brilliant info there guys
I really appreciate it .
I will spend a bit of time going through that stuff today

#31 5 years ago

It’s booting again ,fuse had gone .one of the solenoids had caused it

I’ve also got sound now ,it was the connectors that had stopped this (board had been repaired ) so things looking up

Yes il replace the rectifier board then ,are the sd/power supply kits hard to do?

It wasn’t under water but had lay in a shed for a long long time

I see what yous mean about that fuse on The driver board ,it’s too big for the holder ,what’s the value of it

The ground braid ,is there a certain type I need

Sorry for all the questions ,you have all been superb with your help

#33 5 years ago

Well whatever it was ,it came back with avengence there !
Stuff was lighting that never lit before ,it was alive ,
Smoked the absolute life out the fuse in 5
What’s actually holding them rectifier boards in ,surely something other than those 4 plastic things in each corner
It sounded like there was a forest fire going on beneath it !
Maybe it melted itself to something in a previous life .

#38 5 years ago

That ground is attached that comes up through ,there was a screw there and they are together .
I’ve ordered a new rectifier .
I’m wondering to myself was all that crackling I heard last night ,maybe it shorting out ?

#39 5 years ago

This is the one I’ve ordered ,I assume this replaces everything down there ?

#42 5 years ago

Il have a look at the transformer lugs in a bit
And definitely getting someone else to do the soldering ,mine is about 3 out of 10 at best lol
I know what you mean about taking loads of pics ,I’ve been caught out before and it’s frustrating

#43 5 years ago

Some pics of the transformer lugs
If any of you can spot any thing there
Cheers

Thanks guys

#48 5 years ago

New rectifier board In with the help of a friend .
I’m getting all the voltages on it and iv got the sequenced lights now
Since sorting that it now sounds like something is stuck with a repetitive noise ,like when you hit a bumper .
Solenoids have stopped working and fuse is fine so guessing these connectors again
Still no score boards though ,think I might have to investigate under the back glass for a broken wire ?
Getting there though thanks guys for sticking with me and trying to get this thing alive and kicking

#49 5 years ago

Sound sorted and solenoids ,connector issue .getting very exciting !
So just the these score boards that were working when I got it and not a lot else

So would the fuse in driver board cause this ,even with light sequencing working ?
I’m not 100% which way to get the voltages on the scoreboards and ground

#52 5 years ago

So ,all voltage is there ,230 at rectifier
230 at sd board .but 230 at each side of fuse ?
The adjustment pot seems to only Finely adjust.
No volts at all at the tp2 on score boards

#55 5 years ago

I’ve been told that the displays will still run with 230 volts but just not last as long ?

#57 5 years ago

Got it mate thanks
I’ll get some pics of the displays soon and if you can judge on them that would be great
I’ve seen a few solenoid boards on eBay tested working ,so if displays are ok ,il throw one of them In
They were working at first but a bit of flicker on the main on
So there’s cheaper replacements if going down the led route ?
Il get the pics first ,my head hurts thinking lol

#61 5 years ago

So if I was to fit the led displays ,what do they run off ,
I’ve two other issues ,the sequenced lights and the roll over switches are registering
Anyway here’s some pics of the displays and sd board if anyone can say if they look bad thanks

#65 5 years ago

Cheers guys ,if one score board goes out ,does it put them all out ?
I tried removing one at a time to see if anything changed .it didn’t
So when the power leaves the sd board ,where does it go next? Mpu ? Or straight to the scoreboards .id like to rule those connectors out too .is j1 on the mpu for t he scoreboards ,are there certain pins for each score board or any of those block connectors that could cause it .
Just before I shell out for a sd board and rebuild the score boards
Would sanding them header pins help as a temp fix

#68 5 years ago

Quick update
Got score boards working ,pin on sd board in wrong place would you believe !
The red wire .
So all score boards working now ,we’ll bottom right flickers and third digit missing In all them
Still no flashing lights or roll over switches on playfield .
Any idea there ?

#70 5 years ago

Yes did dodge a bullet I think ,though not convinced the sd board is working right ,if I’m still not getting the flashing lights
I’ve got one ordered anyway ,il go through those connections before fitting

#72 5 years ago

Oh really ,thanks for that .gives me something to look at while I wait on the new sd board
One last question ,do you know where the roll over switches come from ?
None of them are working ,I went through them all yesterday and none are stuck on or off

#74 5 years ago

Yes that’s right the targets aren’t working either
Il have a check at that .thanks

#75 5 years ago

Well targets are working now .still no rollovers though
A4j2-3 ? What board is that on

#77 5 years ago

Thanks mate .got the rollovers working thanks
I have done some reading but it can get overwhelming .
Hopefully this thread will be of use to someone else at least too

So everything is now working except right sling shot solenoid (doesn’t work in test ,changed solenoid too )

Right hand side big bumper
(Works in test mode )

Third didgit from right on each score board
And those flashing lights

So some good progress

#78 5 years ago

Is there wiring diagram available for the aux board for the lighting
I got a new sd board and I’m still at the same stage
Something just doesn’t look right with aux wiring
Even some good photos of connectors would be a great help to finish this

Also any idea on the score boards ,third digit from left missing on all

#80 5 years ago

Great stuff mate thank you
I should of said third digit from right ,I take it is one of the wires below the one you mentioned as I was moving that connector last night and changed a couple of connectors but haven’t hit on the right one yet

#81 5 years ago

That diagram and colours will be a great help, thanks for putting me The right direction and making it easy .

#84 5 years ago

Cool I’ve got that didgit sorted

Just to go through these lights on back box now today when I’ve a chance

#87 5 years ago

I tried some de oxit ,but hasn’t helped
I’ve also taken a step backwards
The solenoid is sticking on ,to on left sling shot now and I’ve lost sound .
When taking the left slingshot out of the equation another sticks on
I was messing with connectors again too
The right slingshot was sticking on when I got it ,I disconnected it ,but now it’s connected all this madness is happening
I’ve lost some of right side playfield lights too

#93 5 years ago

This has now made me a little crazy !
The flipping rotten dog replacement solenoid board is making the solenoids stick on !
I tried the old board in out of curiosity and the solenoids are ok .

1 week later
#96 5 years ago

Thanks tenjuna !
I’m gonna get back at it soon .
Did u change every connector in there in back box and at power supply

4 weeks later
#100 5 years ago

Back at this again ,ive replaced all the mpu connectors and sd board connectors so far
I’m gonna attempt these block connectors next .is there a special tool needed to get the pins and sockets out ?
I’d like to use the blocks again
There seem to be a think orange wire missing from the block
After this I will tackle the connectors on the rectifier .anyone know what size or what they are called so I can order them

#102 5 years ago

Cool thanks mate
I’ve started stripping these Down I’m left with these yellow and orange wires

#103 5 years ago

So nearly all connectors changed and the thing is completely dead now
Do those varistors give problems
This thing is border line getting broken for parts

#105 5 years ago

I’ll get another look at it tomorrow mate thanks for the advice .
I took the plug off the other night and the earth wire was black !
I was convinced that was the problem and stuck another on but still dead
I lost the high voltage first
Then everything
I was reading the space invader owners thread here .seems a lot of us have problems with this pin .makes you wonder why a good worker is worth so little

#107 5 years ago

You were right ,had a pin out . Now I’m back to its turns on
7 flashes
I’ve lost 180v
Iv got 12v and 5 v on sd board
And flippers are on and working ,though game isn’t starting !

#109 5 years ago

No attract mode
Just them lights on bumpers and back box
It’s set to free play ,but the flippers on working like a game is in progress but nothing else
It does do 7 blinks on the mpu
Blink a bit slow around third
Nothing at test point 4 .
I’ve tested all fuses with metre
I’ve the replacement solenoid board and red light not lit for it for the 180
Test point 3 on it was around 230 which is meant to be 300 or something?
Game does nothing

#111 5 years ago

Yes aftermarket board .
No plus 180v
I’ve got 13 on the 12v
And 5 on the 5v

There’s a tp for +300 v .not getting anything there either

I’m thinking then ,the grey blue wire to +300 v on sd board pin 6
Or then -300 v white pin 3 .
Check where they are coming from ?

#114 5 years ago

So I checked the continuity from the block connector to the pins for -300 and plus 300
I had it in my head the 190 came from the red wire In that block too .
Obviously not .
So I will trace that red wire .
Got interrupted .think it’s in the block connector at the other side

#116 5 years ago

I repinned all those ,but used original body’s

#118 5 years ago

So here is the problem .another school boy error .
There’s no 43 at the test point on the replacement rectifier board
Now I’m suspecting the soldering to the rectifier or the power brick .if someone could point me in the right direction please

#119 5 years ago

Or the bridge rectifiers have gone ?
It’s a new board ,I still have the old one and I’m considering trying it back in .
I haven’t went near he power brick as not sure where to take the reading from
Ive went though all the wires I’ve changes from the 20 pin on the rectifier board for continuity .
So at least they are out of the equation completely
There’s a couple of wires cut from solenoids at the solenoid as they were melting

#121 5 years ago

Quick look there and the f4 had blown
I think the left flipper must of blown it .
Hopefully get another look here soon thanks

#124 5 years ago

Thanks for the words of inspiration,il get back at it tomorrow and if no progress at all ,I’ll leave it a week or so

#125 5 years ago

Right guys ,I’m back at this

Voltages all good at rectifier board

None on aux board (haven’t repinned it yet )

190 missing from solenoid driver board

Boards all previously checked out (unless I’ve done damage )

New rectifier ,sd board and mpu all in place

Problems
Flippers on all the time when button Pressed
No flashing lights
No sound
Trying to boot ,but not

#127 5 years ago

Thanks mate

It’s booting
Yes connectors

Still no 190v at the sd board
And those flippers are still live before game is started
It’s not throwing the ball out either
But getting there

#129 5 years ago

Brilliant thanks again
Is the relay the orange block in photo .

I just found the hv problem, the thing bit me .ouch .at the block connector
Not turned off long enough I suppose .
Enough to put me off for tonight lol

I had messed before with the kick out solenoid ,so quite sure it will be my fault

#131 5 years ago

So I slight step forward ,we’ll sort of
It’s blowing the fuse in rectifier
Fuse 4
So I assume that’s why solenoids aren’t working (would this cause the 190 to be missing too ?
I’ve been through the connectors ,so maybe the solenoids causing this now ?

It’s a bit of a mess underneath too

This really is mad !
I started to remove solenoid wires from the rotten dog replacement sd board

I thought ,while I’m at it ,il take it out and check transistors .
I’ll have to double check I’m doing it right
i decided put the old sd board back In and see what happens ,at least it will tell me if connectors are good

So I’ve got the hv on it ,ive worked out the right flipper and left slingshot at least are causing trouble

Flippers wernt permanently live
It didn’t blow fuse ,until I hit the right flipper
(Fuse four on the rectifier) I had a smaller than normal fuse in it for time being

So ,now I know my connectors are good
It’s booting
Game is starting with sequenced lights on playfield
43 v is there for solenoids
190 (well 230 )is there for the scoreboards ,all be it they look a bit messed up

So il get another look soon ,sort the solenoid issue hopefully
I have a burnt track on the sd board too
I put a pic of it up
Sound and gi lights missing .but I’m surely getting there
Not sure what’s Happening with the replacement boards

#134 5 years ago

So getting slightly closer ,I have all solenoids bar , 1,2 , 4 and 11

4 is cut at the min ,as it wasn’t happy
So leaves me with the flippers .
Strange thing is if I press the flipper buttons when they are on test mode they will work once .
I have been messing with the flippers as you can see by the soldering
At least if I know if the right wire is going to the right place it would be a starter and maybe where they are powering from

Could any of you kind people who are still with me on this ,tell me if the wiring is correct on flippers and Outhole .

I agree ,time to let it go .
Been chasing my tail with it for a while ,between connectors and new boards not working
Importing all the missing parts ,like lock down bar ,coin door ,playfield parts .legs etc
Everything that could be messed with ,was messed with previously
