Only on the second round of five so far
This event was AWESOME !!! Thanks to all who came and played ! Mike and Josh worked their tailes off and all except some machine hiccups hear and there I think it went fairly smoothly for such a good first time event of its size in Birmingham. Great Tournament great prizes and great people having fun playing pinball !
What an awesome event! I'd like to say thanks again to Mike, Chris, Josh, the Streets, and all others that contributed. We had such a great time, and being that this was our first pinball tournament, it really set a high bar. Congrats to Tim on his well deserved win! Also enjoyed meeting players from Bham to Atlanta and Selma to Memphis. Can't wait for the next one!
This was an amazing event. My son Addison and I also had a blast. Addison was worn out! Thanks to everyone who had a hand in organizing this event. Can't wait until the next one!!

I didn't really know what I was getting into today as I am a causal player and mainly collect video arcade machines, certainly never been to a tournament. Here is a what I learned about the pinbal folks:
It being first round and me not knowing much about tournament etiquite, I tried to pay close attention to what everybody was doing. I noticed one guy beside me with headphones playing what I assume was Eye of the Tiger and another who had brought a friggin floor mat. I was glad that I was on a 3 man with this dude named Tim because I figured he was around 16, and being that he had likely just been introduced to pinball he would be a chance for me to pick up some points before being grouped with some of the headphone guys. It quickly became apparent that this 16 year old had participated in a tournament or two. I was relieved to realize that it was also William's (the third man's) first tournament and I was not alone. I will say that Tim, although quite competitive, realized we probably weren't much of a risk and kinda took us under his wing. I know that some of those guys would have looked at us like we were crazy if we asked about shots on a particular game, but Tim took a few seconds to give us a crash course on most, if not all of the machines we played on even though I realize now that doing so wasn't really in his favor.
I also realize now that those floor mats aren't such a bad idea. And neither are those headphones. I witnessed several rule calls that I felt were harsh, but now see that i has to be that way. Thankfully, a headphone man stopped me before I plunged one of his balls and did not scold me badly, but unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to stop a guy next to me from doing so on one of my balls later in the day. At first it seemed kinda harsh that he had to plunge out as it happened on ball 1 of a 5 ball EM. It also seemed like a windfall for me and unfair to other players that I would get the benefit of the points he made for me and then have an extra ball at the end of the game. Understanding that it is just a screwed up situation for everybody, the dq rule makes sense as going out of turn has to be strongly discouraged by giving the harshest punishment. I actually won that one without having to play the extra ball, but set myself up for bad pinball karma as I had become cocky and overly aggressive after discovering that the tilt was quite forgiving. I have 3 pins at home and 0 tilt mechanisms and am horrible about moving a machine on the tile floor. While I wasn't as bad as the 1 or 2 instances of the "Mad Player" (the guys who get overly upset and slam the machine hard enough to make the backbox whip like a flag) I did get a little excited about being in contention to actually get 7 points on a pin while grouped with a headphone man, and kept the ball alive when the machine probably should have tilted. It is the only machine I moved all day, but it did slide over a couple of inches. I just got into the zone and was digging the heck out of a EM for the first time as I've only played one other in my life prior to this event (DMD guy here). Now that I have a better understanding of how it all plays out, I should have DQ'd myself as I likely screwed one of the headphone men out of 7 points. He understandably wasn't pleased to watch for what seemed like forever as an ass of bonus (which perhaps should have tilted away) rolled off, dropping him into second place. I still feel bad about that but didn't think quick enough to self DQ. My bad headphone guy, but Pinball Karma was served as I believe that might have been the last machine I scored 7 on. I'll do better
It was a great experience. My 10 year old also participated and had the time of her life. She also met her goal of not coming in last place. I joked with her early on about Tim's pinball power being not of this world and that if there truly was such thing as pinball wizardry, Tim was surely a wizard. She later told me that she really did believe that he must have been a wizard.
Pinball guys are good people - Everyone showed courtesy and compasion to us newbs, and while we may have gotten in some folks way, they never let on that we were. Learned some etiquite and ready to be contenders next time. The event was well run, cant say enough about Southern Coin op, the machines, the free food, and all the guys who chipped in bringing machines, food, coordination, etc. It was awesome to get the standings and round info on the smart phone and the girls behind the computer and taking care of the food were on point!
Thanks for a good time everybody. I can't wait for the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got back to Memphis a little bit ago, looking forward to the next one. Thanks for putting on such a great event. Loved the format and the amount of games played.

It was great to meet you both. Addison is definitely a player! He played great the one time I was grouped with him.
I echo everyone's comments about the tournament. Everyone had a blast. Big thanks to Mike, Josh, Chris, and all the ladies helping out with scoring. After 10 hours, it all came down to one epic match on GoT between Timmy & Chris to take home the big prize. Congrats Timmy! A 300mm ball in the clutch=ridiculous
Wesley, I was the 'headphone' guy and only started listening to music whilst playing last week at our State SCS championship. Seeing as how I finished 2nd there and it was my best yet finish I decided to stick with the music. No worries about the major shaking. I saw you weren't getting tilts on say ball 3 so i could have worked that game as well! If you can get away with it you do. As for the rules, they are there to keep things fair and I too have suffered from a mistake that cost me a DQ at Pinburgh the first round of the second day and I took it too seriously.
Saw lots of new faces (to me) and hope the Auburn gang and I can start another local league around here. Addison played very well on all games (though Firepower and AMS weren't too kind to him). Played him in two rounds. Glad to see kids playing in tournaments. Can't wait for the next matchup there though the points scheme might need to be tweaked a bit for the format.
Does anyone know Thomas Kendrick? Where is he from?
I'm trying to get the results submitted and there is another Thomas Kendrick from the Illinois area.
Pretty sure that's a guy I spoke with that had moved down from there recently. Thanks to all! It was a great time and very cool that Timmy could fight his way back to the win.

The tourney was a success. It actually ran very smoothly. Several of the older games went down for the count, but we had more than enough games to cover it. I had to make a few DQ rulings which is something I never like to do, but playing out of turn is playing out of turn, even if it is another players unallowable extra ball. At least with IFPA scoring, even if you DQ a game you still get 1 point instead of a zero. Congrats to the winners, and the players who took home the JVL game and the Sky Kings EM.
Sorry I didn't get any pics but I was extremely busy as you can imagine! Being TD and playing in the same tourney is pretty taxing! Thanks to everyone who came out and we hope to do another one in the Fall.
INo dog in it and i didnt hear anyone complain about dq rulings, Just curious.... Did the unallowable extraball dq result in the non offending player getting an additional ball at the end of his game?
I know this particular tournament probably won't happen again until the fall, but when will there be another tournament in Alabama or the surrounding states? Sfge?
Glad to see everyone enjoyed the tournament , there were hundreds of hours prepping for this and I wanted it to be non profit for us and just for the players enjoyment . Want to thank again Chris for taking the time to put rules and computer program together prob took a lot of time and dedication . Jeff for all the machines and starting this up by telling everyone in our basic league to have state finals at our shop , from there I started asking about having a big tournament the following weekend while we had all the machines there . So a big thumbs up to Jeff . Also want to thank Josh for hundreds of hours helping at shop , we basically put this together in a month starting out from cleaning up shop from scrubbing floors in front rooms to picking up all the machines and going threw them correcting all the problems and shopping them out including repairing and such to ours and everyone who let us use theirs . And also thanks to Rick for coming by on lunch breaks and every time he had a chance to help with the em pinballs especially since at the last moment he found out he had to work on sat and couldn't play in tournament , the tournament went great with all that help , and contributions from pinball guys that loaned personal machines for everyone to enjoy , I think the point system was fair to all players who were consistent , heck I got a lot of 1:s and still finished in top ten just goes to show that we need more practice and pinball gods on our side to block house balls and win , especially if we're playing Tim and Chris who seem to personally know the pinball gods. Hope to see everyone at the next tournament. Maybe next one will have bigger raffle prize and giveaway . Thanks for all the support Mike @ southern coin op
Mike, thanks for hosting this. It was a whole lot of fun! I was happy to have donated a few pins and will do so again next time if you need them. I'm not a great player but I enjoy playing and hanging out with fellow pinheads.
Dave
Man, I really wish I could have came up, Sounds like it was awesome! Great work guys bringing something like this to Alabama!

Keep an ear out for tourneys, particularly on PinballBash. Hopefully SK just west of Atl will host another tourney soon but until then it's leagues and SFGE in June.
Really sorry I missed this one. I'll keep an ear out and try to make the next one, as well as bring some TN people down.

Several of us are going to Louisville March4-6. It's a big expo with a big tournament. Search for LAX. And of course SFGE. Join the MCPL facebook page. We try to get the word out there of any upcoming tourney's in the area as well.

That's normally what happens. We had a double tilt DQ in our group that resulted in a 1 for the person. Person whose turn got tilted in error got 1 extra ball at the end added to his score.

Yup, he's a Fed Ex refugee from Illinois that transferred to the Huntsville area. Amusing story, he chose Huntsville over Memphis since there were more pins in the wild in Huntsville. I was at my arcade the first time he showed up. He had seen the map entry on Pinside and called bull$hit on it. But they were all there.
My apologies for necroing this thread but.... There will be a match play tournament in Huntsville on the 17th of Sept hosted by the Outlanes pinball league. Details here https://www.facebook.com/groups/1524667864504009/ (will need to request to join that page)
Arcade details are here. https://www.facebook.com/Ronnie-Rayguns-1568541326782872/
Here's the tournament details. Note, I'm keeping this small for now as its a trial run and I'm limited to 17 machines. Free credits will be provided, only cost is the entry fee.
