Hi all! Brand new Pinsider. I have SouthPark, and just ran into a DMD issue I have been unable to solve. Upon startup, the DMD will flash Sega Pinball SouthPark, and the A # version. After that, the display goes blank. The ribbon cable between the game’s main board and the DMD seems to be ok. It has kinks, but after checking it (lead to lead, point to point) with a multimeter, all the wires in the ribbon read out appropriately. I checked the most suspect ones (closest to kinks) for shorts, but each showed O/L. After doing my best to verify that the ribbon was good, I reinstalled it. After powering up the game, I tapped and moved the ribbon around, but nothing caused the DMD to change state from the blank screen.

Next, I reseated the ROM on the back of the DMD—but to no avail.

A little background—this is the upgraded color DMD. The DMD control card appeared to be in great shape, and is relatively new. The pinball machine, including the updated color DMD, has worked perfectly for the past year. The only exception to the statement above is when the DMD froze up on me a couple of days ago mid-game. I turned it off and back on, and voila, the game went right back to normal.

Despite power resets here though, I cannot get the display to work after the original flash showing Sega and the version #.

Thank you for your time and help!

The initial splash is created on the dot controller board. The MPU is supposed to take over after that but yours is not. Does the MPU have alkaline corrosion?

Hi Chris! Thank you so much for your response. The MPU does not have batteries, and to further follow up, no alkaline damage.

I'd have to put it on my test rig to further diagnose.
The plasma interface IC is suspect.

Thanks Chris! I will switch to your website contact info from here. I am thinking a repair is going to be in this game’s future.

UPDATE: I sent the MPU off to Chris for diagnosis and repair. His suspicion was spot on—dead plasma IC. I received my repaired MPU today, and reinstalled it moments ago. To my delight, I have SouthPark up and running again!

I am guessing I’ve just learned what many on this site already know. Mr. Hibler is a Pinball Wizard in this arena. Many thanks to ChrisHibler —he updated me all along the way of the repair, took great care of my board, and got me up and running again! I would highly recommend him.
