    So....

My job is offering me a job in Benton Harbor. But, I want to stay in touch with my family from Rockford IL, so I was hoping to find something near the border of Michigan and Indiana that isn't Gary (no offense to anyone from there). Anyone here from that area that could offer me some advice? I know we have a lot of chicago people in here, and while this isn't chicago, it's awfully close.

    SW Michigan is pretty varied.
Generally right along the Lake shore is pretty high priced rental and summer homes.
Inland a bit is much more affordable.
You can get small town feel (Bridgman, New Troy, Three Oaks, Galien.........) or farm country very affordably.
Saint Joe is still pretty small town, but a bit bigger small town.
Most parts of Benton Harbor, uh......., no. There are some nice areas.
Not a bad drive along I-94 heading to/through Chicago from the whole area.

Like RCA1 said, there are some areas that are technically Benton Harbor, that are really nice and fine. But you would have to do your homework. If you have kids, then look at the schools, Bridgman is small, but good. Lakeshore is bigger and good, and st joe is good. Baroda, and some of the smaller "towns" in the area are very nice, where you don't have to be right on top of your neighbor, but aren't 20 mins from a gallon of milk. I think there are some very nice area's around here, and if you look, you will probably find what you like. Plus there are some great Pinsiders here.

Do you require potable water or a school district with certified teachers?

I live in Chesterton, IN. It has a lot of things going for it like small town, good schools, it's clean & has the Indiana Dunes. It's just over the state line in Indiana. If you were hoping to split some of the distance to Chicago it could be an option. Obviously it's a longer commute than the SW Michigan options. I'm sure there are some good options there, I'm just not familiar with them.

Funny, we were just contemplating Michigan City, Indiana. So northern Indiana isn't out of the question

If you are going to be working in Benton Harbor, then there would be no better place to live than St. Joseph, in my opinion. It's right next to Benton Harbor , but feels like a million miles away with a great town and great beach. I'm jealous. I'd love to have the opportunity to live on the shore of Lake Michigan. It's my favorite place to be in all of the U.S. (in the summer, that is).

And you wouldn't have to deal with the Venetian Festival any longer.
