I'd just install NV ram or a new battery holder with lithium AA. Every older game I've purchased that's the first thing I usually replace, because it's so corroded the battery isn't making good contact with the plates... or like cody_chunn said it could loose or about to fall off.
you could just try cleaning the plates with cu-tips and alcohol, but your delaying the inevitable.
