Quoted from timlah79:

I actually started a related thread about this when I first got my Sopranos b/c I was unsure what the expectation was around sound quality. It had never been unboxed since acquired when the game came out. Long story short, the lo-fi sound of the game is normal and I only needed to upgrade the Game & Display ROMs.
It had:
Game (CPU) 3.02
Display 3.00
It did need these two updated ROM chips to at least support the ColorDMD I bought:
EPROM U210 Game A5.00 (click here for Marco's product link)
ROM0 EPROM Disp. A5.00 (click here for Marco's product link)
I picked those up from Marcos and they are only $10 a pop so why not just go for it?
If you're speaking to the specific sound/voice ROMs... As I understand it nothing changed after the below sound/voice ROMs except added language support per the release notes. I compared the checksum values against the readme.txt notes--which can be found within the ZIP file of the latest 5.00 release. Download here via ipmd.org. I didn't come to any conclusion that upgrading these was needed. The notes are a little confusing as the specifics read "Changes from last release" but if that means that 3.02 included the sound changes below (as opposed to 3.01) then there were some tweaks just after 3.01 that may be a part of 3.02. Nothing was changed after 3.02 though as far as actual sound though AFAIK. Here's a snippet from the readme for 3.00 to 3.02:
/////////////////////////////////////
//START README.TXT Snippet///
////////////////////////////////////
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOUND Release
Date April 19, 2005
sopsnda.u7 checksum $9B5A - ENGLISH
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU Release 3.02
Date April 7, 2005
sopcpua.302 checksum $A1FF - ENGLISH
sopcpui.302 checksum $ABFF - ITALIAN
**************************
Changes from last release:
- Fixed swearing accounting if adult mode is set to YES.
- Increased how often the game swears.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU Release 3.01
Date April 4, 2005
sopcpua.301 checksum $A2FF - ENGLISH
**************************
Changes from last release:
- Increased the amount of swearing the game will do if set to Adult ON.
- Increased the frequency of Secret Mania from the Pork Store.
///////////////////////////////////
//END README.TXT Snippet///
/////////////////////////////////
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. This is what sound/voice mine are marked as. I think I have the latest needed:
SOUND U7
$9B5A 04/19/05
VOICE U37
ROM 4 $ADCD 2/24/05
VOICE U36
ROM 3 $47A3 2/24/05
VOICE U21
ROM 2 $C14C 2/24/05
VOICE U17
ROM 1 $F01E 3/28/05
Hope this helps!

I tried to update my code by erasing and reprogramming the existing chips, but now I have a display issue. The checksums are good but the display is blank. If I flash the power switch it will display stern sopranos but nothing else. Anyone know what I am missing?

This is definitely out of my realm of expertise, but if you think the issue began with the reprogramming of the existing chips, why not just buy the 5.00 Display and Game/CPU chips from Marcos at $10 each then see if your display comes back to life? Forgive my ignorance if you're doing something custom for a reason.

Nevermind, I am a dumbass. I neglected to reconnect the ribbon cable. All is well now. Need to play a few games and see if anything is different. I saw in notes about something mania in the pork store? Never had that award.

It’s the “F’IN BIG POINTS” award

Oh, I see. Well I get that pretty much every game. Not sure if anything is different or not but I update the cpu, display and u7 sound chips. Was a good learning experience and now I am a little more familiar with the gq-4x4

Welcome. I just installed the ColorDMD LED (vs the LCD) and absolutely love it.

NVram installed today and ColorDMD. Changed a few LED's as well. Getting there. Thinking about red powder coated armor next and some mirror blades.

Gotta love the ease of whitestar nvram installation.

I went black with silver metallic flake on my Sopranos, even did the wireforms, love this game.

Nice! I gotta see that! I was thinking about red with a metallic flake in it. One thing is for sure it deserves something better on the armor than hammers satin black!

Been thinking of doing the color DMD install. How difficult is the actual installation? Is there just once source for the parts?

Quoted from LeMansFan:

Colordmd is nearly plug and play. Pull old dmd, put in colordmd, plug in and usb install sopranos file. Pin2dmd is more involved if you put it together yourself.

Quoted from LeMansFan:

Super easy for sure. You have to remove the board from the back of the old DMD and you mount that on the back of the new ColorDMD. My ribbon cable was too short due to the fact I bought a ColorDMD used from a friend, but once the new ribbon cable gets here I'll install that and post some pics. It's the first mod I do to any pin I get! And yes one good source.. www.colordmd.com

#916 2 years ago

Lighted flipper buttons installed. Another mod I have on all my pins. Pinball life kit. My ribbon cable came so I was able to mount my ColorDMD properly as well. Had some Cliffy's laying around so I tossed them in as well. Next up take off that armor and powder coat it glossy red!

Some more pimp added this weekend.. Mirror blades, removed the old ballast and stater and installed a LED tube in place of the florescent lamp, Some stickers on the targets, and through led strip. Love that long harness on these Stern pins to pull the entire PF out and set it aside. Makes it nice to work on them. I swear these pins love when you give them some love as the next 2 games I played I blew away my old scores I also made a little flyover video check it out here...

Let me know what you guys think!

Oh what did you guys do for a LED in the fish? Being this game is home use all it's life, I guess this is the original lamp that was in there? It was pretty lame and weak. I put in a super brite tower and it's much better. Just curious if it will last or melt my fish! It's just a 6.3 volt LED but it seems ok for now. I do have these in 12 volt as well but it seems like it's ok. What has everyone else used? I saw Marco made some type of fix for it but they are out of stock. Here is a video with the new LED in the fish and a pic of the original lamp and the LED I installed. I think it seems much brighter in the video then it is in person only because of how the camera lens catches the light. I guess it's not a solid as it looks in the video.

There may be other sites that show historical asking price (maybe check eBay completed/sold listings too?), but here on pinside's market place you can go to the game's current ads to see what price people are currently asking for it. As you'll see there are two active listings at ~$7500. You can also go to the game's ad archive to see inactive listings/previous ads. Sometimes when the game is sold, the seller enters what amount they actually sold it for. Additionally FWIW the game's details page calculates an average asking price from all ads ever posted:

"PRICE ESTIMATE
We have seen this game for sale in the Pinside Market 75 times. The median asking price is $4,700"

I likely spent way more than most did. I paid $10k but that's because mine was NIB, given to Soprano's actress Edie Falco by Stern as a thank you gift. It hadn't been unboxed it until she did so in order to sign the backglass upon selling it to a local dealer a little under 2 years ago (who then sold it to me obviously).

Hope this helps!

Not sure actually. Her brother might though. As the story goes (and its kind of a sad one), she totally forgot she had it. Her father passed away that one summer and she came across it when going through his stuff. Her brother apparently knows Ron from NY Pinball so he contacted him to sell it. When Ron came to pick it up is when she signed the backglass. Obviously still grieving, she was not looking so great that day, no makeup on or anything. She allowed a photo to be taken of her holding the backglass with Ron. But she made him promise he would never post it online and said something, somewhat jokingly but also serious to the effect of, "If you post this on social media, we're going to have a problem. I didn't land the role of Carmela by being a softy." LOL He respected her wishes. When he shipped me the machine he included a physical copy of the photo. I made the same promise to him, so the only way anyone gets to see it is if they come visit my gameroom.

I love these kinds of stories. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

It's a bummer that Cliff's Sopranos protector set doesn't provide protectors for all areas. I talked to him about this and I guess it's because he never had the playfield so he just created protectors that he knew the measurements for when it came to Sopranos. The fish and the safe cutouts are in dire need of protection. But as I understand those two cutouts are unique in dimension. So for him to create such protection for those would be quite an undertaking and there isn't enough demand for it.

I was kinda wondering why he never made a complete kit for this one. Along with ColorDMD, Cliff is my first mod all the time. I have a few prototype's he sent me over the years. I should see if any of them are close to the fish and safe kick out then he could just make them. Now.. where did I put them!

Anyone add a pinshaker to their Sopranos? Pros? Cons? Just curious if it's worth spending the $300 bucks for one on this pin. I have one on my Met and like it but I know some pins it's not even worth the money doing it. I was going to get the Pinshakers Premium Shaker Motor Kit plug and play.

#947 2 years ago

Here is my cliffy install.... Added mirror blades and also installed warm white non-ghosting LEDs all around and damn it looks really nice. Very happy with this machine. I also kicked down my coils to "low power" and I like how it plays a bit more.

Hmmmm....shaker motor sounds like a cool idea.

Thinking of picking up a Sopranos this weekend. The inserts are still incandescent bulbs. I know whitestar boards are sometimes a flickering nightmare with LEDs. Is it absolutely necessary to use LED OCD on this title? Or can I get away with comet non-ghosting LED? Thanks!

Using non ghosting in mine seems ok. Just 2 on the episodes board show a small amount of light when off. Other than that, LED on! Comet non-ghosting all over mine...
