Finally decided to start a post about my Rick and Morty homebrew. I've had a few people ask about it and others wondering about the powder coat in Robert Stone's powder coat thread so here it is in its current state.

The playfield currently in place was just for test cutting and checking measurements with my CNC router. It has also been used to test my custom designed "node" boards being run by a raspberry pi. I'm fully designing the playfield in Fusion 360.

I will update later with some pics of the progress from when I started to the current state.

    Quoted from jabdoa:

    Hi Ryan,
looks cool. What are you using as a hardware platform? Looks like a RPi connected to a board with RJ45? Just passing the GPIOs to the playfield?
    Jan

Yep using the GPIO via RJ45 connectors. I designed my own two-layer boards in Diptrace and had them manufactured via Osh Park.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've been working on it for a bit but got sidetracked when we moved to a new house and had a kid. Hopefully I can make more progress on it semi-regularly so I can keep things interesting. My goal is to have it mostly done by the next SFGE.

    Quoted from Wolfmarsh:

SFGE is starting to become a home for homebrew!
Are you going to make it to SFGE this year?

We are planning to go to SFGE on Saturday but I'm not bringing the game this year.

    Quoted from nerbflong:

The real question is what's behind the little door?
I cant wait to see how this turns out, a great theme off to a great start!

Haha surprised nobody mentioned the little door. It is for attic access. This is in a spare bedroom on the second floor, across from our game room.

    Quoted from wacco:

Looks great already! What did you use as a base for the cabinet? Is it a donor machine or did you build one yourself?

I built it myself based on measurements from one of my Stern machines. It uses mostly Stern style cabinet parts (rails, lockdown, legs, hinges, playfield support).

Small update. I designed some back box parts I had been putting off and ran a test cut of them out of PVC. Needs some minor adjustment before cutting the final parts but pretty close. Also cut the backglass out of lexan, still waiting on my translite art to get here.

Translite is in! Looks pretty good in person, cellphone camera is washing out the lit up photo. Now onto more playfield work.

    Quoted from EasternBloc:

Good choice and good work on the translite! How about a plumbus shooter knob? Really cool idea and looks like great work so far; excited to follow.

Thanks! I'm using a launch button instead of a shooter but good idea, a plumbus will be in the game though. I'm going to change the shooter button to a portal gun. Probably going to CNC it out of aluminum when I get some time and powder coat it grey.

    Quoted from littlecammi:

Better remove that key for the translite - Rick is already reaching for it.

Haha I didn't even notice that when I took the picture.

    #27 4 years ago

I cut out the black trim pieces for the backbox on the CNC to replace the white ones.

    Quoted from Wolfmarsh:

    Looking great!!

Thanks! I suck at art but I think it turned out pretty good. I saw Space Balls at SFGE and thought you did a great job on it, didn't get a chance to meet up but we were only there Saturday.

I should have a bunch of time to work on this Sunday so I hope to get switch matrix wired up and get some more playfield design done in Fusion. I also need to wrap up some random bits in the cabinet.

following! Anywhere else you're posting updates? (blog, facebook)?

I'm not currently posting anywhere else. I can if there is enough interest.

    Quoted from SickNate:

Where did you get the translite art printed?

The tanslite and cabinet art were both printed for me by Game On Grafix (www.gameongrafix.com). He did a fantastic job. The printing and material are very high quality and the turnaround was less than a week. Just make sure your files are high quality (I sent in vector .svg files) and the exact size that you want them printed.

Sorry for the lack of updates the last couple weeks. I did work on the code/framework quite a bit but that doesn't give much to show you guys. Should have some major playfield updates soon.

    Quoted from Lounge:

    Diggin’ this - any updates?
I still hold out hope one of the manufacturers picks up this title.

Sorry, no recent updates. Life has been a bit too busy to put as much work as I want to into this but I should be able to put some hours into it soon.

    Well this is awkward.

How so? I can either continue to build with this theme or change the theme, not a big deal. Spooky building something doesn't affect me, I've owned and played their games...we will see how it turns out.

    Sorry for your loss......

What did I lose? Sorry for your lack of ability to make anything but a snarky comment.

I was building this as a personal project and find the electrical engineering and software design the interesting parts, considering I'm a computer engineer. The theme comes second for me. The only reason I went ahead and themed this project was to give myself more motivation to get it completed.

This will Always be awesome and unique no matter how many others are made. Looks incredible so far look forward to seeing where you take this.

    Thanks!

    Quoted from mrm_4:

I really hope you continue with the build. It’s been a bit since an update, where are you with things?

I'm still working on it every once in a while when I have time, but I've been busy with normal life stuff and these things take a lot of work to complete solo!

    Quoted from TheNoTrashCougar:

    That was not very nice.
ryanx0r I am super excited to see what you come up with! Engineering is indeed fun, and you get to do a little of all of it on a pinball machine. Except civil engineering..... Unless you put some highways, waterways, or dams in your game.
    --Scott

Thanks Scott, looking forward to playing your new design! Still deciding if I will order one or not so I'll have two R&M games.

    Quoted from McSquid:

Been following, hope to see this continue. In a theme about the multiverse there is tons of room for more than one R&M

I still plan to continue the build it will just take a while, sorry for the recent lack of progress.

Sorry guys I don’t really have any updates. I kind of left the pinball hobby for a bit and having a toddler has gotten in the way of working on this project. I hope to get back to it soon when I get some free time.
