Ok so something died on my LOTR, I'm thinking possibly on the MPU board

The DMD stopped working,
the game plays however skips some callouts
The game starts modes, the next ball too fast
and seems to freeze at the end of a 3 ball game
Switches all work
Lights work well, however matrix lights pulsate sometimes

All LEDS on the boards light up solid
I cannot see anything burnt or traces missing
All fuses test good
I tried replacing the 74HTC273N at 201 (circled in red) as recomened as a common cause of DMD failure in: http://www.pinballsupernova.com/images/Sega_Stern%20White%20Star%20Repair%20-%20PinWiki.pdf
Tried reseating roms connectors etc.

One weirdness is all main voltages look good however the 50v is running at 73v, but I dont have any other whitestar games to see if that is normal or not but it seems high, possibly the bridge is failing?

Maybe its a rom or cpu chip failing?

Anyways any ideas would be appreciated, damn whitestar boards are expensive and hard to find!

Any new or old acid damage? (make sure you check the back of the board).
Have you tried to unplug the DMD ribbon cable and play without the DMD? Try it. Problem still there?

I agree, Whitestar boards are VERY hard to find and when you do they're $450-$500. I just had to buy one but at the end of the day I'm glad I did. You can get them fixed but I suggest you make sure the tech has a test rig.

Yea I tried flipping each way to see if it made any difference on both to the display board (26pin) and the one to the dmd (14 pin) and nothing.

If I have to I have to, I'm not to worried about it but just weird, if someone has a multimeter maybe they could check their 50v tap and see what it runs at? I'm wondering if the higher voltage is causing the problems or if its the MPU board.

It's not your power supply the 50V cirquit on my LOTR runs at 71,3V.

I had a similar problem with my LOTR LE when I fried my DMD controller board. After I fried the board I played some games without the DMD controller in the game and had similar strange gameplay issues as you mention in your first post. After installing a new DMD controller board the game worked perfectly again. Do you have a newer or an older Stern (SAM) or a DE pinball machine at home? The controller boards are interchangeable in a lot of games so you can check if your board is still working. This would be my first suspect and not the Power board or MPU.

I really appretiate the feedback - sounds similar, these are occuring without the dmd controller in - I just assumed that if it wasnt hooked up it would operate fine Ill try that one next rather than focusing on the driver board.
