Alternate backglass for William's "Smart Set" on Vancouver CL right now...I think I prefer this to the original! To be fair, the ad does state that the BG is not original.

I did own a Smart Set several years ago - the only game that I got for free and I let my 7 year old son shop it out However, I promise that I will never, ever let another Christian Marche game into my collection

You would never, ever be able to drag this one away from my place. Speed Racer meets the pointy people. Sheer beauty. Plus it's a real fun game.

Christian Marche is my favorite pinball artist, and one of my favorite artists, period. Brilliant blend of modernist graphic design & proto-cubist figures. If I had unlimited space, I would own every game he worked on. Feel free to downvote me, haters. I can take it.

I hate Christian Music.

Thumbs up for sharing the hilarious replacement art! I like that the artist went with Players A, B, C and D instead of the standard 1-4. And "water sports on the golf course" is definitely a superior theme.

Nothing like surfing the crystal blue waters of Hawaii.

LOVE Christian Marche. Had a Doozie in the 70s - recently got another one.

Christian was a very versatile artist, he painted more than just pointy people. Bow and Arrow, Aladdin's Castle, Williams Grand Prix, Dixieland and about 145 other games. That's a lot of games to never, ever allow in to your gameroom!

One more Cristian Marche work of art that I would let into my gameroom if it would come my way.

Did he do CC Casino?

Yes.

I hate the pointy people. It was the 60's, too bad couldn't they have got James Rosenquist or Lichtenstein. Someone should re-theme something with Lichtenstein, hell I'd settle for Warhol just because it would probably look good. F@#K while we're on the subject of art & pinball, they should have got Robert Longo to do the art for Johnny Mnemonic. That shit would be bitchin'.

#14 8 years ago

yup not my cup of tea either.Silly rabbit ....... Its all about the curves on the backglass and angles on the playfields....

#15 8 years ago

Then I am a fan.

#16 8 years ago

I don't care for the pointy people, but Aladdin's Castle is a great looking game.

#18 8 years ago

I know Marche isn't for everyone but I like his style. Especially comparatively.

The pointer sisters.

In hindsight I think I was a bit harsh on Mr Marche. After doing a bit more browsing on IPDB I realize now that I just hate the pointy people stuff he did.

Research this.

Not a fan of his stuff. Most of it looks like he sat down and cranked them out in a big hurry. That Sea Ray one is kind of rad though.

I'll contradict my previous statement about hating pointy people....my least favorite bg of all time is this "rounded people" effort by Marche.

Is it just me, but that alternative back glass is horrible.

No it's not just you - it is horrible. Just slightly better than the original IMHO

#27 8 years ago

I love Christian Marche's artwork. The women either have "pointy tits" or "banana tits"!

#28 8 years ago

Hate is a strong word. Some of those look pretty rad to me.

More pointy people. My first game about 20 years ago and been in the family since the mid 70's

His art is definitely interesting. I just picked up Williams Jackpot and it looks like the pointy people made the cabinet!

(Though supposedly this isn't a Jackpot cab....if anyone can shed light on what I've got I'd appreciate it. )20160101_111834_(resized).jpg20160101_111834_(resized).jpg

This one always reminds me of "Eep Opp Ork AH AH!"

Actually back then women wore bras to give them that weird pointy tit look

I love Christian Marche and the pointy people! Pointy people for life!

I am in o-din's camp - Pit Stop will never leave!

Quoted from o-din:

Plus it's a real fun game.

You have a much better BG than mine. I have a line on a more or less NOS backglass...but the guy wants $300 for it.

This is on my wishlist:

Strangely enough, all of the 3 games in my collection have Christian Marche artwork. It wasn't intentional, but I have REALLY grown to appreciate his work by looking at the intricacies every day. Haters gonna hate.

#36 8 years ago

Christian's work was a part of the times.

#37 8 years ago

I'm in doubt about his artwork.

I really appreciate his artwork as what it is - art.
Most backglasses look great on their own, to look at and admire.

But on a pinball machine in my home - no, it's ugly, it doesn't belong amongst the rest of the games.
Recently had a Firecracker and am glad it left the gameroom.
To be on a pinball machine it's too dated and weird.

#38 8 years ago

My first game was Skylab

Currently have Klondike, Space Time and Student Prince

Love the pointy people on my Gulfstream.
Plus it looks pretty warm there. It's really cold, snowy, and nasty here today.

Little known fact but before around 1975 people actually were pointy and Marche's artwork is an accurate representation of life back then.

Some Marche artwork in my gameroom from the period when people became more rounded:

I use to dislike the pointy people, but for some reason they've grown on me and I really like them now. An added bonus to liking them is that there are some really great games with pointy people that you can get cheaper because people don't like the art.

You are correct, hate was the wrong word to use. I have changed the subject line to reflect this.

#45 8 years ago

I like Marche but at the same time sort of understand why he is so polarizing. As far as commercial artists go he seemed to often be less "commercial" and more "art" if that makes any sense. Not something everyone can appreciate.

#46 8 years ago

I like the pointy people, I bought the OXO backglass just to have it. I guess I was raised in the "pointy years".

#47 8 years ago

Here's my son hard at work doing his first shop job I can't believe this was taken 10 years ago...

My original thought was that the game for sale on CL was my old game. The game I owned had a chunk missing from the top left corner and there wasn't much skin left on the people so it would have been a good candidate for a new glass. Looking at the cab markings though, I don't think it is my old game.

Nothing too fancy, just nice colors and lines that seem to blend in with everything else on an amazingly fun pinball machine.

One Williams EM glass I don't like. I don't mind the dancers in the back ground or the colour scheme, but the lady in the left corner looks awful! And the Lettering for the title on the back glass just doesn't fit the theme. And what's up with where the Williams logo ended up?
