Quoted from WeirPinball:I base my bias on maintenance -
Ferrari's are maintenance nightmares, but a blast to drive!
Quoted from Pin-it:I thought Chicago coin was AMC ?
They never made a pin that good!
Quoted from Pafasa:To your first point.....I wouldn't know
BUT!!!!
To your second point!!.....I wouldn't know either
I'll keep driving my 69 Chevy CST10 so every other vehicle I drive feels like a Ferrari by comparison.
As a mechanic for 30 years I had the chance to drive and work on almost every different kind of vehicle, and in the end I came to a conclusion that they are all junk. I own an 01 Tacoma, and it suits my needs just fine. But lately I drive as little as possible.
And in hindsight Bally is more like a Buick than a Chevy.
Quoted from textrivers:Cripes, this thread. Jeep is better than Chicago Coin, Williams Grand Prix gets bad gas mileage,
Jeep is better than most vehicles, too. And yes Grand Prix probably gets the worst milage. It has that gas guzzling four barrel chime unit.
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:Heh...I had a 1997 Toyota Tacoma that I bought new in March of 97. It had 137k miles on it (very low for a 17 year old V6 driver)
The 3.4 L V-6 is a very solid, simple, dependable motor. Far better than the 3.0 L it replaced in 1995. I believe it was used up to 2004. All of their four cyls. were pretty bulletproof, too.
OK, I'll play. This is a nice looking woodrail. Gottlieb Straight Flush

The Fireball next to it is for sale, too. $2500. I talked to him, nice guy.
Quoted from Jean-Luc-Picard:well, I won the Abra Ca Dabra. It went from $300 to $488
Cool! And you beat the price police estimate to boot!
Schematics are nice to have, but I'm finding the cabinet labels are much more helpful. Knowing what does what, and simulating gameplay with the playfield up and watching what relay does what when devices are activated are a great learning tool, and can help you find switches that need cleaning or adjustment.
Quoted from AlexF:Ooh, nice example for the money. I personally love those mod cabs. Congrats.

Thanks Alex, now I have a place to set my beer. When I saw it was in Oceanside, I had no choice. I'm heading down that way this weekend anyway to pick up my daughter.

Very rare
good condition
Set-up for home use but complete with coin slots
stored for 30 plus years
Well maintained during times of use
Sold as is but full refund if not satisfied at time of pick-up.
Sounds like a win! Definitely a no lose.
Quoted from EM-PINMAN:Be sure to share some nice pics with us once you get the machine home.
Will do! It has a moving target, and wheels! Not sure if those are original, but may come in handy.
I've never seen one of these before. Does anybody know how many they made?
Quoted from neutrino:Congrats on your new acquisition.
I'm so excited! A lot of the furniture in the house I grew up in had legs just like that machine! Some of which are still there.
Quoted from Shapeshifter:Not many I would guess!
Yes, I've been searching for info, and even who designed it seems to be in question. But rarer still would be Bally's 1965 Magic Clock, which by my best guess is listed in error on ipdb.
I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for a nice "Jungle" if one just happens to pop up for sale local, but with the finds I've had in the last couple weeks, that will either not happen for a while or could happen next hour.
I noticed some of those modern cabinet designs use light up numbers like the older wood rails, and Magic clock has score reels. That must have been when Williams made the transition, from what I can tell.
Quoted from ccotenj:you are on a good little run here...
I think it's time I leave some of the action to you guys, but my friend told me last night that I was now the official ruler of the "Some nice looking EM classics just showed up on........" threads.
Quoted from ccotenj:plus california is a heckuva long drive from new jersey...
You got that right! And no shortage of EM classics on either coast. One thing I mentioned before is that when I was growing up, I saw a lot more Ballys and Williams out here than Gottliebs, and the same seems to be holding true at the present time. And although I agree with most that Gottlieb made the higher quality units, the other two were no slouches in the gameplay department, and in many cases showcased superior artwork. Just my humble opinion.
Heres a good looking woodrail for those of you in the Michigan area.

It does look nic
That game reeks of style and class. I had enough Jack the other night that I almost bid on it, but woke up the next day nowhere near Delaware.
Hell, I might just buy it anyway and whoever picks it up gets to put it next to their Christmas tree where the wife and whole family can enjoy it until the New Year! Then it comes my way.
Quoted from ccotenj:if you want it, drop me a pm and we can chat tomorrow...
Thanks, buddy. It didn't sell last time, but it's good to know if I get drunk and buy it this week, that somebody can pick it up. Maybe NAVL can go straight there, but who knows. Local pickup only.
I may have to have him send me a couple more pics before I pull the trigger. But you have to admit, that thing is cooolll!!!
Quoted from EM-PINMAN:some nice Playfield pics are definitely needed first.
And the rear of the backglass would be nice! Although those brightspots may just be a reflection.
Quoted from ccotenj:might be a prudent decision to do that BEFORE opening the bottle of jack...

I'm so sick, that after this heatwave we're having, a pinball machine called "Sunshine" looks
refreshing!
Quoted from Pafasa:Um.........
Not at that price! C37 is a $1400 game folks. At best. And this one looks beat.
Quoted from Shapeshifter:Condition is everything with these games.
I had a chance to buy one of two very nice ones local, but I just didn't find the gameplay all that spectacular. I guess I'm the odd man out. Also a Buckaroo is available. I'm teetering on that one. It is a novel game.
Quoted from Pafasa:O-din. Play some more C-37.
I guess the night I was there, I really didn't spend a whole lot of time on it because I was just smitten with the Grand Prix he had, which I now have, but I'm finding that the Star Pool I finally got back together may soon take it's place.
Quoted from ccotenj:it is still there, and still with a 105 max bid...
I messaged him and he sent pics to my landline (me no cell phone).

I'm going to store one in the hole in my head.
What do you guys think? This one is about an hour from here, and I'm starting to like older 60s games. The cabinet is a wreck, but the playfield looks ok, probably better if the glass was cleaned.

Well hoov, if the pictures of that beautiful machine didn't sell me on it, you did! And we all save fees.
Thanks Robert. Keep us posted of any upcoming pins for sale right here. Or better yet, just PM me.
Thanks again, Brian AKA o-din.
Will do hoov. I'll admit at one time I didn't get your love for only wedgeheads, but I'm starting to see the light.
Yeah, we seemed to have a lot more Ballys and Williams out here when I grew up, but the Gotts are the best quality I've seen so far, and the Ballys seem to be wired like time bombs. I like them all, but I'm starting to sway towards your way of thinking.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:Yeah, there are some titles that aren't so hot, but overall, it's hard to go wrong with a single-player Gottlieb EM in decent condition.
Do you like my choice?
Quoted from DirtFlipper:Even the Bally single-player EMs reset the playfield on each ball! Ugh.
It took me a few minutes, but this is not correct on all Ballys. The only single player I have, which is Bon Voyage, continues it's strategy throughout the game. Lighting of the letters and targets do not reset. This is an excellent game with the best spinner in pinball that I have seen (it sits right next to my Williams Grand Prix), and I plan to keep it.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:But I will say that the three 60's wedgeheads that made my final cut (due to space) are Buckaroo, Kings & Queens, and... King of Diamonds.
Well, I've got two out of the three now, and interestingly enough, Kings and Queens is the other that I have been after. There are plenty more that are great, but I'm long past what should have been my limit.

Thats the same one that made me buy mine, remember? It got bid up to $3500, then the top buyers backed out. I was given a second chance on it, but mine was on the way. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Now I'm going to drive to Hawthorne and pick up that KOD. See you guys later.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:This is a different EM JP than the other recent one (which, incidentally, appears to have sold for 3K the second time around).
You guys are right! I just took a quick glance and saw the long description and figured it was the same one.
It's always a pleasure driving into LA. What a bunch of IDIOTS on the road today. Thank goodness it wasn't rush hours. But it was worth it. I'm back and I've got a crate in the back of my truck. I think I might unload it after I have some lunch. Anybody want to lend a hand?

ebay.com link: BALLY MARINER EM PINBALL MACHINE 100 WORKING AND SHOPPED
Quoted from Darcy:O-din. You do know the difference between a hobbyist and a hoarder? Just checking.
Never been a hoarder. I've collected auto parts, but as soon as the vehicle they fit was gone, so were they. I can get rid of things faster than I accumulate them. Sometimes it snowballs and everything goes. But that is not where I am at. Thinning the herd, but keeping the gems is what I'm thinking. I've got a few newer machines that I can live without.
Quoted from John_in_NC:24 watchers already
Speaking of which, how irritating is that little watcher banner that shows up every time you try to click on one of the photos.
Sometimes it's nice to be in the right place at the right time. I got a good deal on a nice Solar City off Craigslist a year ago. Buckaroo didn't cost an arm and a leg either, and has way less wear than that one.

Don't go thinking it's all great deals on So Cal's Craigslist. You always have to weed through a bunch of crap to find something worthwhile. But at the same time you have to be ready to pounce when the opportunity arises.
I'll let you guys be the judge on this one-
Quoted from EM-PINMAN:A 1972 Bally Fireball
And a very nice example. If it goes for under $2000, I will be shocked.
Quoted from ccotenj:what do you guys think a "reasonable" number on this would be?
$2000 for this German model.
Quoted from ccotenj:thanks o-din...
Go get it! I paid 2500 for mine because it was in better shape than any of the American versions that were out there. I have a theory that some of the German ones never made it on the boat, and therefore never on route. Mine sure doesn't look like it has sailed the seven seas.
Quoted from RobT:If you ever get rid of yours you will have to change your username!
Now that might be a little difficult on both fronts.
Quoted from ccotenj:arrrggghh... you were supposed to tell me, "no, you don't want that one"...
Do you want one to restore or do you want one to play? I just got tired of looking at my old beat up Fireball, wondering what to do, and now I don't think about that any more.
Quoted from ccotenj:i want one to play... i don't want a beater for a title like this...
Then let's just let this all get buried in the thread, and you keep your eyes on it, and maybe you will end up with a hell of a deal.

I've seen it mentioned a couple times that Knock Out is a rare title. IPDB says they made 3000 units, Is that number incorrect? Or is 3000 units considered rare.
I've seen a few over the last year, and I'd imagine since it was such a popular game, that there are still quite a few survivors. I wouldn't mind having one, but not at the price they are getting.
The EM Joker Poker looks, sounds, and feels better than the solid state, however the solid state resets each bank of drop targets as they are completed, instead of at the end of each ball, making for much higher scoring opportunities. The chime unit has a hard time keeping up sometimes. If I had a choice, I'd go with either or both.

Rich in spirit, but poor in wallet. Which means my wallet disappeared at work this afternoon. It had to have fallen out into one of the cars I smogged late in the day, because I had it when I went next door to get some Reeses. I usually put it in my truck, but there were people there. So we don't get phone #s, only addresses. I just spent the whole evening driving from here to hell and gone knocking on doors and leaving notes. I'm with you on that Alex. Lately I've become more and more drawn to machines with the pin-up style artwork. Especially games done by George Molentin.

Quoted from AlexF:Molentin is my favorite pinball artist for sure.
I'm sure he must have done Big Daddy too, but I can't find any record that gives him credit for it. It has to be. Although the ladies on the backglass have a slightly different look about them than he usually painted.
The playfield art on Big Daddy is very consistent with Moletin, The only difference I noticed are the backglass ladies have much fuller lips ( a feature I tend to like) than I have seen on his other work. Either way, it is a fine work of art.

Quoted from DirtFlipper:In what way?
I'm sure it works mechanically, and i know that is not hard to achieve, But refinishing the cabinet and playfield seems like a lot of work to me. If I was to pay a price like that, I would want those items addressed beforehand. If the cabinet had better artwork left and the playfield wasn't losing it's finish, it would be a good machine to leave as is.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:I'd prefer the cab as-is, keeping its originality, rather than a repaint.
So would I, but this one is missing a lot of it.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:How 'bout the playfield? I must be blind.
The paint looks good, but in the bare wood areas it looks like whatever they used to seal it is flaking away. But I am no expert on what they used back then.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:I see it now! (Zoom is a wonderful thing.) Bummer
Yes it is. I saw it yesterday. This thing is only an hour from me, and if the fit and finish on this machine was any better, I might have thrown him an offer. But not what he was asking. But somebody out there can make a real beauty out of it. I'm just not up to the task.

I guess I under estimated the actual value of a Delta Queen-

Quoted from Gerry:Heroin does funny things to people !
" Press the button, and the action starts. I'm not an expert by any means, but I did play test it. The lights seem to work correctly, the bumpers bounce, the score counter works... it makes bell sounds and dings appropriately."
And there's more-
"The legs will come off to make transport easier for you."
"The cabinet has a pair of holes drilled in the right side of the machine. Perhaps this was for a coin acceptor at one time?"
Most entertaining.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:That's Robert U. O-din bought a KoD from him, which found it's way to Rat (I believe).
That would be correct! Robert is a great guy to deal with, and I've never seen a pinball machine packaged so well. He makes a custom crate for it.
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:It is a fantastic machine! Robert U. is the man! O-din's the man for selling it t
Robert is the man that also sent me Big Daddy, thus adding to my thirst for other great Williams titles. Rat is the man for helping me free up cash and space to do so. I'd also like to thank the academy...........
Quoted from bigdaddy1:I sold my Williams JACKPOT
I was pretty tempted to contact you on that one, but I already have a Klondike. Still loving that Big Daddy you sent me. I guess you might have noticed. Thanks!

Quoted from EM-PINMAN:For that price they should be throwing in a mint Joker Poker EM as well.
You guys and your Joker Pokers.
Quoted from hoov:This guy resides in California where odin is
Not even close. About 400 miles away.
Quoted from hoov:I can't help it your state is so long......
A tad bigger than Rhode Island....
Here's a real crowd pleaser-

Quoted from jrpinball:Nice "Dodge City" just posted.
Quoted from DirtFlipper:and with it not being a Gottlieb or a more well-known Williams title, games like that just fall through the cracks unfortunately.
Do you mean like a Shindig or something?
Quoted from DirtFlipper:there are several more.
I would be happy just to find one in nice shape that wouldn't break the bank. Williams or Gottlieb.
Quoted from CactusJack:I serviced one for a guy before. I was used to working on CC games from the 70's (Blue Max, Hollywood etc.). I was shocked at the build quality of this game. I swore I was working on a Gottlieb. Much of the guts, as I remember, looked just like Gottlieb parts, not CC. I think the score reels were just like a Gottlieb of that time.
I get the feeling they might have done a retheme here or just used Gottlieb parts. Kind of like that Buick that had a Chevy engine deal back in the 70's
One of my favorite westerns when I was young was Alias Smith and Jones. It wasn't a real serious show, but it was very entertaining just the same. If I remember correctly the show was moving up in ratings about the time star Pete Duel took his own life.
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:70's games don't keep me coming back for more as much as the 60's games. I think I am done with 70's drop target games.
I agree 100%. Once you get where you can knock down all the drops in one ball there is not much more to it. One of the reasons Joker Poker hit the road. I have whittled down my 70s pins to a choice few and I still have Solar City, but I'm not sure for how long. That would leave Big Daddy as my only EM left with a drop target, but that one taunts you.
I wouldn't mind a couple more with the moving target like on Magic Clock. Still looking for a River Boat.
Quoted from AlexF:sometimes I get the itch to knock down some drops.
Yeah, me too. I think I may keep Solar City around for a while. After all it was my first. But I don't see a need to add any more.
Quoted from boilerman:a buddy has a river boat he has been thinking about selling, nice condition and a fun game. east coast
Thanks boilerman. If the price is right, I wouldn't mind paying for shipping. It has been on my short list for a while. I have been contacted about another one, but haven't heard back in a while. I have never played one, but I like the look and layout. Please let me know if he might be able to send some pics.

Quoted from ccotenj:didya finally find one???
Not yet. But I have the feeling it is getting closer.
Meanwhile I am sitting right on top of the epicenter of this last weekends earthquakes. And I just felt another jolt.
Quoted from ccotenj:you seem to have a magic touch when it comes to finding games...
I can't just have them all handed to me on a silver platter. That takes some of the fun out of it. It'll give me something to look forward to. Like the next earthquake.
Quoted from ccotenj:you can keep the earthquakes...
It looks like I may have to. I have never felt so many jolts in my life as I have in the last three days. I think I might actually miss them once they stop.
Quoted from jrpinball:I hope everything stays together out there for you left coasters.
Thanks! We're all good. I have never been this close to the epicenter before, so this time I get to feel all the aftershocks. We just had another one! My house is well built on a raised foundation. I just need to get under there and make sure it's bolted down.
Quoted from jrpinball:Yikes! The biggest one I ever felt was a 4.0
This one was a 5.1 which doesn't sound too bad unless you are sitting right on top of it. The one from Whittier back in the late 80s I wasn't even close to (I was in San Clemente) was a 5.9 and it felt like that house of cards apartment building I was in was going to collapse. The Northridge quake was the big one. The ground just rolled under us.
Quoted from ccotenj:we paid money to play beaters when we were young...
Yeah. Just as beat up as that Fireball.
Quoted from CactusJack:I believe I began playing sometime in 1974. Probably just about the time Pinball became legalized in LA.
It may have been illegal in LA, but not down here in Orange County. I started playing a few years before you, and I would try just about any machine that was out there. Most of the machines around here were the newer Bally's and Williams, with a few Gottliebs here and there. I never noticed the older machines worn out, but I did notice that they would end a game on a tilt. The older games were a bit cheaper to play, but it seemed they took the money just as fast.
Quoted from alb0711:the Pike in Long Beach
When you mention the Pike and woodrails, I can't help but remembering the Cyclone Racer. I'll be darned that I never got to ride that thing! But my mom did. And she told me it was one rickety sled.

Quoted from alb0711:I did get to ride the cyclone once. I remember my father lost his eyeglasses on it. For some reason I think the price was .75. They don't make them like this anymore!
While I was doing my search, I found this pic also. Kind of surreal.

Bon Voyage in Mass. A fun machine and a real looker. $550 Buy it now!

Quoted from ccotenj:there are 2 bally's on my wish list, and this is one of them... i REALLY like the art and color on this machine... captures time and place perfectly, and i'm a sucker for that kind of artwork...
Yeh, I had to do a little bit of jumping through hoops to pick up mine. It is the kind of machine that once you have it, there doesn't seem to be any logical reason to let it go (unless of course it catches fire). It is not only a looker, but has great gameplay with one of the best spinners out there. Fireball is my other Bally of choice, but I wouldn't mind picking up that Raquel Welch dinosaur themed one someday.
