Just down the street from Chicago....not a bad price

Quoted from ccotenj:

you can squeeze another one into your closet...

The Atlantis may be leaving the closet today headed for the York Show..........but I'm not interested in that title to take it's place - has to be special like Atlantis.........maybe Abra, Slick Chick, C-37

Thanks! I was thinking $200 at most. On the other end of the spectrum, we have this-
Ebay link

King of Diamonds is a classic 60's GTB wedgehead. This game has it all - artwork, roto target, playfield layout, backglass animation, gameplay. That's why Herb Silvers made his own run of 100............ Even though the game is nice looking, I wouldn't pay near what he has for his buy it now though, especially since it needs a new backglass to go with the rest of the game.

#318 10 years ago

Dave:
I'm the seller of the KOD. I was at your shop at midnight with some friends over a year ago picking up a Gottlieb 2001.
Do you really think the backglass of my machine needs to be replaced? It is the original and I think it is an 8 into an scale of 0 to 10.
About the price, it was listed with the option to hear reasonable offers. Unfortunately, Ebay takes approx. 10% of the final price plus the cost of shipping that need to be traceable online and shipped to the address of the buyer because of the rules of Paypal. I can sell this machine out of Ebay for a lower price to be picked up at any PILOT terminal if it is paid with a Money Order or a Cashiers Check. Pickup in person,of course, will be the best and cheaper option.
Another question: what do you think about the final price and the condition of this other KING OF DIAMONDS that was sold recently on Ebay?: http://tinyurl.com/o4koemc
Robert Urbanowicz

Sorry for the long post........

Hi Robert,

I hope you got your 2001 restored and you're been enjoying it.

To answer your question, you can ask anything you want for your game )

I only wanted to say that I wouldn't pay that much for a KOD because I'm cheap but that doesn't mean someone else wouldn't. Your restoration came out very nice. That's why I suggested a repro backglass. Sometimes a new backglass on a game as nice as yours just makes the whole game "pop". Again, my opinion only. You could sell your original glass to recoup some money.

I found mine for $900 in very nice all-around condition and it needed shopped which I did myself (with a little help). You have to realize too games are more plentiful in the Midwest than in Utah. I thought it was worth about $800 but to me was worth the $900. It's not as nice as yours because mine has a slight flipper drag wear mark above the left flipper - it doesn't bother me but a lot of guys it would. Other than that, the rest of the game is very nice and all original. My backglass is real similar to yours with the score reel rubs common to this era of game. I found that using a little lighter color of acrylic paint in the white of the score reels works pretty good. I sealed my glass with TT 1st and then just the touch-ups last. The burnt orange was just mixing and matching the best I could. I try to "take your eyes away" from the games' defects. You can see my pic below.

The other KOD auction was surprising to me too. In my opinion it was 2 or more bidders that had money and wanted that game bad. It was a very nice KoD but that many $$$$'s? Joe G's Atlantis that was the nicest one I've seen went for $3000 last year on a no-reserve ebay auction and Joe stated he thought it would go for $2200. There again, a couple bidders that wanted that game bad.

Joe also stated in a forum that he sells games on ebay now with a no-reserve auction and lets the market decide what it's worth. He said generally he's been real happy with that approach, with the exception of a couple that went for less than expected. The time of year you sell may affect the price too. Between November and March, more people are on ebay buying pinball machines when it's cold outside. Having Pilot Air ship your game is a great option to buyers with NAVL another good option. What also works good is if you list a machine on ebay say 2 -4 weeks prior to a show such as EXPO saying you will deliver. A lot of guys go to shows wanting to sell their games and buy something else.

I might suggest a no-reserve auction for your KoD. You should do pretty well considering you have such a nice game. I've done a few and they've done fine. Ebay states it's the best option to make the most money - they're probably right. You'll probably get a good price for your game but then there's the notorius fees........

Good luck however you sell your game,
Dave

Win-win - great!

Quoted from bigdaddy1:

Dave, many thanks for your words.
KoD is now on hold. I have a Gottlieb Central Park also listed on Ebay: http://tinyurl.com/mhymxga. The same terms about a lower price for this machine and the cost of shipping apply for a sale out of Ebay.
Robert

Robert,

Glad you and Brian could hook up on that deal. Nice hearing from you.

Pictures of the "King" in it's new "domain" when it arrives please.

#330 10 years ago

The only reason I like them is because my operator brought in 90% Gottliebs into his route locations when I was young. They are built like tanks and once you get them up and running they're pretty problem-free after that. If I grew up with all Bally's or all Williams it may be a different story. To each his own........

#339 10 years ago

That's the four 60's I have:

Buckaroo
Kings and Queens
King of Diamonds
Bank a Ball

Plus throw in a rotating title in there - currently a sweet Target Pool - but I will find a Slick Chick to go in it's place when I tire of it.

Like them all........

#341 10 years ago
Quoted from Shapeshifter:

Nice choices!
Would add Gigi, World Fair, Ice Revue, Flipper Cowboy.
If I could have any 3 of all mentioned that would be a very tough choice.

Flipper Cowboy and Buckaroo have the same playfield. Some differences in the games are aab, backglass animation, and slight variations on scoring, ruleset, rollovers, etc.. I like the Fliiper Cowboy but decided to get the Buckaroo since I like replay games.

#343 10 years ago

Check out this '41 GTB Spot Pool. OK, so the pop's are a little melted - no biggie. Seriously though, most of the same parts used then (and before) are still pretty much the same through the birth of SS's. Transformer, tilt-bob (Harry Williams invented that didn't he?), switches, etc.. Check out the 5" bell they used then. Reminds me of the old school bells albeit smaller.

Buckaroo is a good player but for the best experience - as with all em's - it needs to be dialed in with good pops and flippers, etc.. If not - it just taint the same..........

I have to sell the unshopped Bank a Ball to make room for a Slick Chick (plus extra playfield) that Dirtflipper found in a package deal that he offered to me. I can occasionally scoop a deal off CL but most of the time they either are gone or the jackass takes a higher offer from another caller.

That's the one thing I dislike too Jeff. Being 1st to respond to a pin for sale on CL and setting up a time to pick it up, and the buyer caves to other callers offering more because they know they weren't #1.

Challenger is a very unique 2-player game. They only made 110 of them so it's rare. I've played it and to me it's not very fun but to someone that collects rare games and has a lot of space for this monster............... Book value is $2200 right now - a few years back I remember book value was $1500 so it's on the way up as far as prices go.

Ken

I've gotten used to the 3 - 4 hr. drives. Sometimes 6 or 7 if I want it bad enough. I've got a lot of nice pins that way. Not that may come up for sale locally since I don't live near a major city.

Like rare?

ebay.com link: 1971 Gottlieb Bristol Hills

In Phoenix - only 110 made. No. 22 on Brian Saunders 70's list for rare titles (plug for Brian since he is a friend of mine)

#980 10 years ago
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:

But is this game actually any fun? Rare doesn't always equal fun.

I only said this game is rare. Some don't even care if it's fun. From a post over on rgp this title is not as fun as Snow Derby and Snow Queen. Search the archives for Bristol Hills on rgp for more info. on playability. I've never played it.

#987 10 years ago

I always wanted to own a Knock Out but just don't have the room.

#989 10 years ago

I just can't justify the expense of what one typically goes for.

That too...........

#993 10 years ago
Quoted from WeirPinball:

I got that KO on CL - originally listed for something like $350 - turned into an auction, but I won.

If I could get a deal like that I would make room.

Quoted from AlexF:I have a friend from Madison. He told me of a story of another guy he knew getting one for a few hundred bucks off of an ad in the paper I think. He was bummed he missed out on it but happened on another one within a few blocks of the first at a rummage sale a couple weeks later in better condition for $250. I'm not sure exactly when this happened but the fact that two turned up within the same month within a mile from each other both for bargain price about blew my mind. What are the odds?

Great story..........

Any guesses as to whether the reserve gets met and the final price of this holy grail Mermaid?

I'll say the reserve gets met and final price will be $14,100. It could easily go higher with the right two bidders.

Don't know what he was offered when it was on CL but it surprises me there was only one serious buyer. I heard of one person that had the repro pf and contacted the guy when it was on CL.

I know of others here who buy nice games from collectors, then turn around and not only triple the price, but claim that the restoration was done by them rather than the person they bought the game from. You never know who he might reel in; someone with lots of disposable cash and no concept of what a pinball machine is supposed to cost. I guess that's what he's hoping for.
He probably wants a cool 8k or so for this SS "JP". http://pinballpickers.com/pinballmachines/joker/home.html

Maybe trying to sell games similar to what Fabulous Fantasies (high-end restorer) sells out there in California sells? Hoping to grab a few high-end customers with $$$$$$?

I heard through a reliable source that an El Dorado with a repro pf and a repro bg sold for $8900 from a high-end restorer (not naming the business) recently.

They say you can list your games for any price you want. That doesn't mean you'll get it.

Interesting - thanks for sharing. I had a re-import Dodge City and it seemed to play fine as it was already working when I bought it. I knew about the score motor but have ever heard about problems with bonuses counting down, etc..

Yes, turret is the correct term - thanks

#2259 9 years ago

Technically not really a "turret" shooter as it does not oscillate like Derby Day, Hayburners 2 and other true turret games.

Dennis is correct - it is not a turret. A turret rotates.

Agree with everything you guy's have said about the Gypsy Queen. The high-end restorers like Russ seem to have a following of loyal buyers with $$$$$ that will pay more for a game like this. #2446 9 years ago
Quoted from Heretic_9:

I'm a bit put off now re this title, due to the mention of MDF used in the manufacture (how much, and exactly WHERE ?), rather than standard plywood. Particle board is fragile **crap**, which can crumble to dust. I've always avoided buying any furniture that contained it. If any of you restore Abra Ca Dabras, do you try to replace that "wood" content ?

Don't be put off by this minor problem with Abra Ca Dabra. I think dirtflipper was referring to the compositie panel at the back of the base cabinet. If you stand the base up vertically, then of course the game rests on this panel (although there's supposed to be 4 furniture nail buttons which are missing a lot). In a wet environment that panel disintegrates pretty fast. I moved an Abra once several years ago and I'm pretty careful moving games and a small 1" piece chipped out on the bottom lip of that panel because it was composite.

If the game has stayed dry in it's life chances are you won't have any problems. You just have to be a little more careful moving. I wouldn't replace that panel unless it was damaged/had got wet.

Definitely one off the better titles to buy that are out there. In my top 5 of 70's em's.

#2738 9 years ago
Quoted from Heretic_9:

Awhile back, I asked Dirtflipper if anyone ever posted bounties or finder's fees here, and he said that it's been known to happen. Well, here's the proof. It would have to be for a title that's awfully rare and hard-to-find. No doubt, just 350 units made seems to qualify. (BUT, with 8000 of the SS version made . . . I dunno. Especially if it's one of those cases where the SS closely duplicates the attributes of the EM version.)

Several in the hobby will pay for a game "that stands out in their collection" because of it's rarity. They have the money too - which I don't.

Same reason people may look for a low production muscle car from the 60's - maybe a convertible or a low production model with unique features.

The funny thing is some of the rare collectible pinball machines with low production runs are duds to play.

#2749 9 years ago

I don't understand this........ 'local pickup omly' ! Will arrange for local pickup only (no shipping).
What's the difference who picks up the machine. I would think the seller would feel more secure if a known mover picked up and moved a machine as opposed to a stranger.
Anyway what are the odds someone local is going to buy the machine.
What am I missing here ?

You have to choose that option in ebay now - either (1. )local pick-up only - will arrange for local pick-up only (no shipping) or (2.) shipping with fees attached.

It's up to the seller at that point on whether he will allow any shipper to be involved at all. The buyer will contact him to inquire about using a shipper. He may let STI come get the game, he may take it to a terminal or place with a loading dock, or he may want it picked up at his house - his call.

#2829 9 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

The hardest part about shipping an EM is the fact that a good portion of the time the shipping costs will be as much as I paid for the pin itself.
If I'm going to pay for shipping charges on an EM, it would need to be something pretty special that I really wanted, or a deal where I could have a couple of them shipped at the same time to make it worth it.

The Californian's I've dealt with all seem too familiar with the 2 for 1 deal. Word get's around out there

Not a bad game to go get since these are harder too find than most. Playfield doesn't look too bad but I would ask for better pics. Most of these have insert wear in the top of the lower drop bank and right side upper when they get about 40,000 + plays. Coin door and strike plate needs to be addressed. You could remove that switch and repair the damage and touch-up the paint. If you're going to have a hack to the game I'd rather have it on the side of the head than the playfield.......

#2918 9 years ago
Quoted from Heretic_9:

Isn't that pretty much the same pin as El Dorado ? I see El Dorados on eBay with some regularity, though often along with a 'No Shipping' statement. O.K., this one is low production, but I'd have zero interest in pretty much any AaB game. Much better to have a replay version (or one of the 4-player versions, if you're not that attached to the Western theme artwork), and much easier to obtain in this case.
Not sure what the deal is with that side hack -- why they had to do it that way. There seem to be different ways for doing it. The Gottlieb wedgeheads have this funky thing going on when wired for free play. Pressing the Start button twice, one of which is the actual game ? Or one press, but a ball has to be run through -- during which nothing on the pf is active, and THEN it all lights up, ready for play. I can't explain it, might not even be describing this well . . . .

Gold Strike is the aab version of El Dorado which is the replay version. They also made Lucky Strike, Solar City, and Target Alpha which use the same playfield layout.

On a Gottlieb wedgehead - if your game is working correctly you should have to push the start button only one time and after the game goes through the start-up sequence it should kick a ball out to the shooter lane - all this takes only seconds.

#2921 9 years ago
Quoted from stashyboy:

huh?
Do you mean 'Canada Dry'?

Lucky Strike is the Italian version, Canada Dry (which you noted) is the export version, and El Dorado City of Gold is the electronic version.

Seven games share the same playfield layout.

A little unrealistic to have a couple of pretty, shapely ladies with one having her gun drawn in front of a wild-west tavern where a guy could get booted out the double door at any minute (think King of Diamonds). But, if you own the game and are playing it, the ladies ARE nice to look at.........

Choice no. 1 is the correct answer- I saw them in person (live an hour away) and went back home with no em's a few years back (I'm an hour away) after I had seen his games in his metal buildings out back with no HVAC (+ critters I've heard). His best games were in the smaller buildings up front that did have hvac and were sold in the beginning. Re his em's, he was asking prices too high for the shape they were in. Maybe now the prices have come down to earth - I don't know.

Guys,

I got the Bank a Ball on CL (on ebay too). Going to someone I know who wants one real bad.

Contractor/electrician doing work for a lady and she said "get the game out of the basement" please. So, sellers, they're not. Movers, they were, and she is happy it's gone.

Playfield glass needs replaced. Knobs missing on lockbar. No. 2 plastic animation pool ball has detached from metal arm and fell (see pic on ebay) - all other pool balls are fine. Nice cabinet (I've never seen anyone go this crazy with an ink pen before though), nice playfield (dirty with a little left flipper drag), and super nice original backglass.

Edit: And, oh, the legs were painted with that medium puky green (think small Testors bottles) we painted our model cars with back in the 60's - 70's.

I do have to say I got to play a Gottlieb King Pin and an El Dorado at TPF 2015 and the King Pin just killed it. I had a beautiful Target Alpha a couple years ago for about 3 months and could not sell it fast enough as I hated the play, so I thought maybe an El Dorado would be way different, but not so much and after playing just one 3 ball game it was back to King Pin I went to play it some more.
More power to all you El Dorado fans out there but I just can't stand the play of the game, sorry, it was one of those games I wanted to love, but can't.
At least I can say I love the Artwork. To each his or her own as everyone has different tastes.
Ken

Agree with dirt - need to play several 5 ball games to really give it a chance and yes, it does have the better rule set of all the replay titles imho with that playfield. But since you already had a Target Alpha and wasn't happy with it, it doesn't surprise me you didn't like it. That's what's great about this hobby - everyone likes something different than the next.

Congrats on the King Pin. It's a fun game. Played it a ton as a kid.

You can take your conductors off of the hold relay and splice them straight through to bypass the relay and your game will still work. I think Clay made mention of this somewhere on pinrepair.com if I remember. That contiuous duty coil seems to burn up a lot from the heat generated from being held in all the time and some feel it is not needed. So they just leave the relay in place, unsolder the conductors, and splice them straight through.

Not something I do........I like original..........

Central Park is a good player imho and I enjoyed it the year it was in my collection - hated to let it go. One of the games where good nudging skills are needed. The theme, artwork, and backglass animation with the monkey makes it special. I would repaint it to original, throw a new backglass in it, and find a lot less desireable game to re-theme.

It's your game though if you do get it.....

Man, that IS a rough cabinet. Playfield looks 'fair'... although probably could have done without the post somebody had put between the flippers at one time. And it almost looks like 'one' post hole wasn't enough for them?? Sheesh.... the dumb things people do to these games.

I realize this one needs a lot of love. But, if you can get it cheap enough it would be a good players game.

Heck, it's sitting at 99 cents last I looked.

#4338 8 years ago

I liked my Crosstown when I had it for a couple of years.

Interestingly enough, Sing Along incorporates the same four top rollovers as Crosstown with the same pass-through gate directly below at the top center of the playfield. It also has the same double rollover side lanes as Crosstown. They both have 4 pop-bumpers but they are spaced slightly differently. The center targets are also different. Sing Along squeezed in 4 horizontal relay kick-out holes in the middle of the pf. Crosstown has two dead bumpers down low where Sing Along has stand-up targets. IMHO Sing Along has the better rule set of the two. Crosstown has the elevator door animation unit (a plus). Same layout in several areas but also many differences........

Both good games to own.

Quoted from D-Gottlieb:

Mystery solved! The ipdb entry for Volley mentions chipboard being used for the playfield instead of plywood on the ones with the painted flipper area.

I had a Big Hit and it was the same way. Also, chipped board was used on Jacks Open (mine is plywood) and Volley as you stated. No rhyme or reason to the quantities made and numbering system. They were just trying to cut costs and try something new at the time. Here's a quote from Tim Arnold on IPDB:

Tim Arnold contacted us with the following information for 'Big Hit', 1976 'Volley', and 1977 'Jacks Open' which explains the different playfields:

I have noticed a mystery on these three games I can solve for you. I have had many examples of these machines over the years. Playfields with PAINT over [flipper] swipe area and top arch are made of CHIPBOARD! I first saw this at Cleveland Coin back in the day when we were thinking of buying the game off the floor. Our salesman told us to take one in the box as the painted over area was "Pressed wood". I later talked to Cliff Strain [in Sales] at an annual trade show. He told me they were trying new materials because of a spike in the price of plywood. I have had two of these three machines since then, and the paint seems to stick to the wood just fine, but the surface turns rough and bumpley (sic) under the paint.

Big_Hit_yellow_playfield-composite_001.jpgBig_Hit_yellow_playfield-composite_001.jpg

#4493 8 years ago
Quoted from D-Gottlieb:

Yep. I am glad that my Volley is not chipboard. I didn't know that some were when I bought it so I guess I am lucky. I knew that pretty much every Gottlieb EM I have ever seen uses bare wood for the flipper area, so I would have investigated a little bit, but I doubt that I would have realized the potential problems this can cause.

I personally would still buy any of the three painted composite playfields (Jacks Open, Big Hot, Volley) as long as the playfields were not subjected to a wet, humid environment. The paint bubbling I had with my Big Hit was very slight and not noticeable to the naked eye. I also had some spider-cracking which was very minor too. My playfield had always been in a dry environment. It looked better than a lot of plywood playfields I've had with graining/planking.

Vic Camp had a nice white Big Hit playfield he sold.

Here's a couple pics of the one I sold.......

Boilerman brought up this game on another thread last night. That playfield would be tough to match the skin on the girl. Then, add the K insert wear along with other inserts, kick out hole wear, and planking/graining. The rest of the game doesn't look too bad. I wish I was sitting on a playfield right about now.

Quoted from boilerman:

as far as rare, like odin said at one time I thought 800 production runs were rare but really anything under 450 is the rare number to me now. and some of the early bally and William games that don't have a production run figure but they must of been sub 500 because you see so few of them. a old pinball guy once told me that a good estimate of how many games survived is 10-20% of production. so by that thinking em joker poker should have between 80 -160 games floating around out there.
I am guessing that this em joke poker sells for around 3500. rare game always sell and to the right buyer it sells for more than most of us would pay. remember the Gemini(300 made) that pinball girl sold?

The interesting thing about rarity is how many games stayed in the US vs how many of them were shipped overseas.

Take Dimension for example at 490 and Hit the Deck at 375 - I own both. You see Dimension come up for sale more than Hit the Deck because the production numbers seem to show it and more people are holding on to HTD.

But, take an example that was shipped overseas and not considered an Italian version for instance, and a few of them made it back to the states - now that's rare to us in the states!

Hey Dave,

Didn't a lot of Strange World's go to Canada too?

#5195 7 years ago
Quoted from ZNET:

The lion's share of the 229 Blue Notes and the 268 Rock Stars went initially to Canada.
O'din's Joker Poker EM, as depicted in post #5188 above, was pretty spectacular. My JP EM (shown below) demanded considerable restoration work; however, the end result was acceptable.
My game arrived with a blemish-free backglass. However, the reds had faded dramatically. The last photo shows the original backglass with some of the reds appearing as flesh tones, e.g. hair color of the jester in the foreground should be dark red, not flesh tone. Ultimately, I acquired a replacement original backglass which escaped fading (as shown in the first two photos).

Good info. Bruce. Thanks for sharing!

Again, awesome collection.........
