Quoted from RobT:

How hard is it to get a new backglass for something like that Top Card?

http://www.flippers.com/back4sal.html has a NOS for $250 - $450. The glass might cost you more than the whole game

BGResto http://bgresto.com/ might be able to do a resto of it for around $250.

Shay http://shayarcadegroup.com/ and Ron Webb http://pinballglass.homestead.com/don't have that glass on their list. They both sell reproduction screened glass like the originals that were used in the games.

#2352 9 years ago
Quoted from ccotenj:

i don't believe it has been repro'd (or if it has, it is nla), but you may be able to get the bgresto guys to do one...
backglasses might as well be made of gold when it comes to em pinball machines... imo, it is the most important cosmetic part of the machine, and it is virtually impossible to make a bad one look good... pf's can be touched up and cabinets can be painted, but a bad bg will always be a bad bg...

That's what I figured, if for no other reason than most ads I see for EM's always seem to place an emphasis on the condition of the BG over all else.

I'm still in the market, with a strong preference for a wedge head.

We don't get to see many of those around . . . at least not locally.

Damn! Why are they never in So Cal. I NEED that playfield for my game which is trashed (PF).

Some sort of mass hypnosis, perpetrated by Gary Stern ? In line with this thread -- and the EM Poll one -- I gotta say I'm more appreciative of the pins from Stern Sr. (such as Meteor, Stars, Stargazer . . . and those are ones I've played, not necessarily the best of them), rather than the over-gimmicked, over-toyed, talk-too-much, relentlessly licensed movie ones from today's Stern, which wear out their welcome all too quickly. As much as I would love a chance to play BBB or Kingpin (both of which I've never seen, except in a video), I think I would be even more curious to play a Catacomb. There is one of the latter up on eBay at the moment. If this is actually an early SS, no matter: I think you can lump some of those in with the EMs, as some of them are more EM-ish at heart.

#2358 9 years ago

^^^

i think "we" came to a gentleman's agreement awhile ago that several early ss machines are "em'ish" enough to get lumped in... imo, if it plays like an em, that works for me...

my only problem is that i couldn't diagnose/fix a board if my life depended on it...

There is no such thing as "EM-ish". If it is has an MPU, it's not an EM. As with everything else, pinball is a process of evolution more than revolution. Early SS games merely reflect what the status quo of pinball technology was at that particular point in time. The playfield layouts, with their lack of ramps, multiple levels, etc, do resemble the EMs they replaced, but the dividing line came with the introduction of solid state components and processor control which replaced the old relay technology. Even games that were made in both versions play quite differently from each other. While the early SS games are ancient by today's standards and one could nostalgically lump them in with EMs, they certainly are on the other side of the line.

I'm glad the seller gave some background about the game's title. Now I understand!

Ahh, I see. It says so on the side of the lightbox!
Sheesh, save the backglass, this is a pile. Worth maybe $150 tops!

This is one awesome backglass for you "Ben Hur" fans. It's a major dog of a player though. Look at the size of the side drains!

Not too bad!

It's hard to tell. The picture is over-exposed and blurry as well. The purple cowboy in the lower right has a definite "foam mark" though. That's easy to see.

No, I'm at work, about to go home and see if I can make that thing go. I made great progress last night, but you know all about ancient machines that have been stored for decades ever since they stopped working, I"m sure. I am just a bit tired today though. The boss is taking the week off so I'm working every day. That's no fun!

#2373 9 years ago

I've had jobs where when the boss is on vacation, it's like having a vacation yourself!
I forgot, you're on PDT. Here on EDT, I'm well into my six pack already!

There is a 1945 Hollywood pin. Might be what he is thinking he has.

The boss is never there when I am, which is why I have a job. It is a one man operation. Neither of us wants to be there six days a week, so we usually split it, three days a piece. That is what I am used to, and that is the way I like it. He is way cool. I have had other bosses that I couldn't understand how even their family could put up with them, but he is not one of them.

I am hoping this one lasts at least until that glorious day when I am finally eligible for social security. But I'm not holding my breath on either.

I bid on this but got beat out. Usually I feel disappointed when I lose out. This time I felt relieved as it would have been a lot of work to restore with my other baseball game.

I've played Shipmates. I thought it was pretty charming and not a bad player.

The Klondike Playfield looks really nice. Those plastic ball shooter bezels were crap and they should have stuck to the metal ones as the plastic shafts that the screws go into break. They did eventually go back to metal so I replaced mine with such and it looks way better as well because the color on the plastic ones do not even blend with most of the Williams color schemes on the cabinet and sticks out like a sore thumb. A truly easy fix.

Here's one you don't see every day- Williams Jolly Jokers-

JOLLY JOKERS is a great game I really like the art, it was better than the replay version 3 coins
if it was local I would be on it like a fat kid on a donut

#2396 9 years ago

Looks like the fat kid licked most of the frosting off of the backglass.

I certainly like your avatar. Always wanted to play a Majorettes. I've heard a lot of good things about that game.
