Just picked up a 1971 Williams Solid N Stripes. I’m having a plethora of issues with it that I cannot for the life of me figure out.

1) I cannot “start” a new game by pushing the start button. I have to manually change the ball count wheel back to 1. The machine is forever stuck in game mode for some reason and is unable to reset or restart on its own.

2) whenever I do the above “hack” to play a game, it automatically plays two players. It also is stuck on 5 balls even thought I switched it to 3 balls. Here’s the main issue; whenever ball 5 on player 2 drains, the match won’t end. No game over, no lit ball number on backglass, the game just spits out an endless amount of balls until I manually cycle the ball count wheel back to 1.

3) it’s forever stuck in 2 players. However, all scores only register to player 1.

4) last issue i swear (there are more but I’ll spare you). My 10’s and 100’s do not advance to the next reel (goes from 90 back to 0 instead of 100, goes from 900 back to 0 instead of 1,000). The 1,000 works fine advancing to the 10,000s. Ive cleaned and adjusted the switches but for the life of me cannot figure out the issue.

Thanks in advance for ANY tips or tricks.

Sounds like your stepper units need to be serviced... they should step up and step down easily; you can manually test by moving the coil plungers on each unit, mimicking the movement made when each coil is energized. While you're at it you should clean and then apply a light coat of super lube to the bakelite disc that the wiper fingers move over.

That game uses quite a few steppers - credit, ball count, match, coin.

Here's a good place to start learning about EM theory of operation and steppers in general; There's a lot going on under the hood of this game, including the large relay bank under the playfield that keeps track of each player's made balls; I've restored one and know from experience what a bear it can be:

So I’ve cleaned the steppers and they both move fairly smoothly. However, issue with ball 5 is the gear has an extended tooth because it needs to reset. The reset mechanism does not appear to be working correctly. When I manually do it i can get the game back to ball 1. Still no game over though.

You'll need a schematic and follow paths for game over relay trip, and ball count unit reset. I have a schematic but not handy...

you should invest in getting the schematic from Pinball Resource... I have a feeling you're going to run into other issues as you fix the ones you currently know about.
