Oh yeah I have bought way to much in terms of cool yet crazy crap to even list. Things unopened that I had to have at the time then when they arrived I realized I had no use for it at all, but it sure is fun.

#152 6 years ago

This is the coolest thread on pinside right now, and it's keeping me from wanting to chop my legs off at work to get a couple sick days in. It makes me feel like some ultra fiscally responsible person knowing I've never bought a fire truck, some gyrocopter, or other uselessly amazing things, but I know I'm not because I have 12 pinball machines in my basement.

I bought a Sunfish sailboat once on craigslist for like $500 though. It even came with a trailer. I didn't even know how to sail it, and I didn't have any car with a hitch, but I thought "Eh... Looks cool. Maybe I'll get people to call me Captain Ahab or something."

I sailed it like twice, ran into something because I was clueless, and punched a hole in the bottom. On top of all that, people haven't started me calling me Captain Ahab either. Maybe it's because I don't have a beard, or maybe it's because a sunfish is basically a canoe with a sail. Idk. Either way, it was fun.

Bought some crazy shit for my Cigar Room. Custom shot glasses. (some were $300 each), custom mugs, bottles, lamps and ashtrays. Frankenmug is one of my favorites!

#155 6 years ago

Please make it a real "FIRE" truck and not a water truck. IT has to shoot fire some how. If I ever buy one that is the first thing I will do to it...

As for the topic... where do I start?

I don't own the Corvette or the red ambulance, that ambulance belongs to a friend. But everything else was or is mine.

Too funny! I almost bought a Motor car once. Those are actually cool! There were clubs of guys riding abandoned rails. I always thought that would be fun.

I once bought an escape ladder for my 86 year old grandmother. She was a large woman and probably incapable of crawling out the upstairs bedroom window, but she wanted one. Turns out the woman was not as crazy as I thought. Her bedroom had two beds, one by the window that she always used and one across the room. One Summer afternoon she decided to take a nap, however because of threatening weather, she decided to sleep in the other bed. Being a country home, it had no AC so she would leave the windows open. Lightning struck her mattress that day and set it on fire. She awoke in the other bed and was able to push the smoking mattress out the window. While not technically using the ladder, Grandmother knew about danger.

It is. And for the price of a nice B list game you can have everything you need to ride the rails. Check out www.NARCOA.org There are a few excursion that happen in your neck of the woods.

Went and got the fire truck last Friday! Thing looks amazing....as perfect as the pics thankfully since I bought site unseen (other than pics.) We left at 5am and got home with it at 7pm...slight delay when we had a rear tire blow out 30 minutes after getting up to 60mph on interstate. Head to Crutchfield at 10am to start audio/video mods.

Took things off the sides, ladders and hoses, to make room for wrap logo ideas. And I’m redoing my office logo. This ones too dark especially on the bottom of sphere so we’re playing with lighting effects. Other choice is a white sphere but I think the chrome/grey will look better on the truck and it resembles a pinball!

Its a nice rig. Luckily you lost a dual tire and not a steering tire so that's good at least. Whatever you do don't be tempted to run lights or siren on public roads. By all means use them on private property and parades as long as you have permission. That's the #1 thing people do when they get an emergency vehicle. If you get caught it could be a felony offense. Your truck probably has a PTO on it. Make sure it's always off unless you are planning to use the water pump. It should never be on when driving. Other then those few things enjoy the truck.

#163 6 years ago

Thanks for the advice!

#164 6 years ago

Super cool, I've seen fire trucks go cheap before.

I would check state law regarding the lightbar, it may not be legal to leave it on the truck, even if it's off.

I assume you've checked with your BMV about needing a CDL license to legally drive the fire truck, right?

#165 6 years ago

That just looks like way too much fun!!!

#166 6 years ago

Yes, I’ll need a CDL. It’s over 26,000 lbs and has air breaks. Relying on friends and a retired neighbor with CDLs to get it around as needed thus far. Will begin studying for CDL over Christmas.

#167 6 years ago

Make sure you check out this story. I remember reading it several years ago and thinking that guy was the coolest person ever:

https://imgur.com/gallery/CRBPL

Good luck on your CDL!

#168 6 years ago

Your tire blew because it was very low on air. When the tire is low it flexes a lot and overheats. Always check the air pressure before driving. A quick thump with a tire thumper, like a section of 3/4 inch pipe about 18 inches long is what I use at work when pretripping my bus in the morning. The sound should be the same when each tire of the dual set is hit. The best place to strike is the corner of the tread.

#169 6 years ago

What kind of motor? Detroit 6V92?

#170 6 years ago

You should enroll in firefighting school. Be sure to volunteer for driving duty and get assigned as chief operator. Why not learn about it as part of the job?

I like your ideas for transforming the truck. Since you are obviously a pinball fan and mentioned wanting a Fire! How are you planning to incorporate the pinball machine to pull out at parties?

Any light bar that is red or blue, on a not in service, Police Car, Ambulance, and Fire Truck, in B.C and possibly Alberta must be covered up. A Bug Bra type of wrap around, is the minimum requirement. Some provinces have restrictions on decommissioned ambulances and fire trucks. Either all of the decals/signage have to be removed, and/or the vehicle will have to repainted a different colour. For instance, in Ontario you can own a retired school bus, but it can not be school bus yellow.

Generally here in Canada a publicly bought piece of equipment, will be disposed of at some type of auction, sealed bid or live bidding..

#172 6 years ago

That's pretty sweet. Me I'm still waiting for a real life tank to pop up on my local Craigslist so I can park it in the front yard and have the turret follow any moving cars that go up and down the street.....LOL.

John

#173 6 years ago

When I got my Ambulance I made sure to remove all the LifeStars and lettering. I don't know if I needed to do it but I figured that it can't hurt. I also changed my front light bar to amber lenses just cause I like to run it allot and I tow a race car behind it so it could be a tow truck.

Absolutely killer sweet fire truck! Can't wait to see the after pics.

Craziest thing I bought? Has to be a pin to be produced by JPop. It was temporary insanity.

Here's one that just sold at an auction not too from us. No I didn't even bid on it.

What a deal someone got.

#177 6 years ago

Here’s the first rendering of the wrap we are working on. Lots of tweaks to do tomorrow. I tried to look up Virginia law on the light bar and it looks like I might need to cover it. I’ll wait to be told to I assume. I’ll get something made with my practice name that looks nice hopefully will be allowed

Got a pm for a mint Fire! near me but had second thoughts putting it in the waiting room due to concerns with noise and patient acceptance. Was hard and sad to turn it down.

Bought this today to use off the top of the truck in night time Christmas parades!

Cover it as opposed to simply disable? That's unfortunate but not the end of the world.

Reminds me of decades ago when our city passed a law requiring nude dancers to have their nipples covered at all times. Instead of wearing pasties, some of the girls challenged the law by covering the area in a thin layer of vaseline.

Craziest for me was a swap: I gave an old computer and got antique stained glass windows.

Craziest for for friends: I dated a girl whose dad had a Model A Ford AND a hearse!

I regularly get emails for gov't surplus items, and every time there are wild things available: city buses, ambulances, zamboni, 4D motion theatre, ... even an entire school! If I had more money, I'd have bought the school so I'd have a place to move the 4D theatre to.

The "A" logo is what you are drawn to. "Angelopulos Dental" not so much. I would recommend another mention of the name toward the tail, nearer the graphic.

I’d concur, merged into the A logo.

Thanks for the logo input you guys. Don’t think I’ll be able to put my long ass name near the rear of the truck as well. We are playing with placing tag line be black and white smile photo or possibly one driver side and the other on passenger.
Blue ridge Mountain silhouette also possibly.

Man that is a lot of truck per lb that you got it for. I wonder why the FD put that little miles on it and decided to sell. Sounds like good fortune for you, but waste of tax money for those that live in that community.

The CDL test should not be a problem. Get your permit and practice. It's good to read that you have some people near you with a CDL that can ride along. I had to get a CDL as a Civil Engineer when I worked for a State DOT because they needed bodies for snow plowing with dual axle dumps w/ air brakes. The one area I almost failed was the walk around. It's amazing what they are expecting to hear that you may not say.

I myself have wasted money on stupid stuff over the years. The most interesting was when one night I was drunk, watching QVC at 3 am, I bought a box of swords and knives. At the time I had planned to give out for Christmas gifts. When I received the package I realized how crappy every item was and nobody would want a sword for Christmas. I lost half the money shipping the heavy thing back.

This is what the Fire Dept told me. Coal mining town of 7000 people. Fire dept sets at top of a hill. Once the truck hits 20 years old it gets downgraded to class B. They started petitioning FEMA 2 1/2 years ago for a new truck due to...class B truck, truck too small for current needs, difficultly climbing back up hill. FEMA finally granted them a $450,000 new truck. Old truck immediately must be decommissioned from fire dept usage. So unusable for any fire dept even though fully functional. Agree, bad for taxpayers but a ridiculous bargain for me.

I stopped by the Mack truck lease and sale today just t make an acquaintance with them. Was introduced to the president who was super excited for me to bring truck by. There gonna due a full look over and check the other tires, etc. and want me to have it on display in the spring for their 60th anniversary celebration. Was pretty cool experience since I was nervous walking into trucker world .

#189 6 years ago

I figured it had to do with age, but these are so overbuilt they'll probably last a hundred years. The hill thing makes sense though. You're going to get me in trouble now after reading because I'm imaging what I could do with something like this.

This is an off year, offensive line is terrible........bengals will be back next year though. Sadly though I don’t even care anymore because I’ve pretty much boycotted the NFL. I love football but I love our Veterans a lot more and I won’t support any organization that disrespects our country, our veterans, and our military. I miss watching football on Sundays but I’ve actually adapted pretty well without it.

Right on brother............
