I’ve seen several videos on YouTube on how to play CP. How would you approach it in a tournament/high score setting?

Don't.

Multiball and get good with hitting the million point skill shot

My strategy is to stay as far away from it as possible.

high score setting

If you enjoy the game (personally, I'm not a fan)... high score route that is fun with risk/reward is big value Cash Fights after you've defeated all the boxers and become Pub Champion.

It’s not recommended to use this game in a tournament, but left saucer all day is fine plus when you get far enough in the game the scoring goes insane and is completely unbalanced.

If the tilt is low enough, shake the game and make the big toy in the center register hits while you cradle the ball on your flipper.

... that's what my friend says.

most aren't going to be getting to cash fights competitively (honestly the wackiest part of the game scoring wise)
1) Save the smart punches, don't waste them on the easy fights (the first few).
2) Get really good at drop catching.
3) only use the jump rope to build the health meter to get to a fight and stop (don't waste jumps).
You have to requalify everything to use it again, once you've qualified the jump rope portion.
Do those three things consistently and you'll probably win most every time. If you can save those smart punches for the cash fights, even better.
