Holy moly man, you really do only get about two days a year of decent weather. You folks up North are hardcore. I get all bummed out when it gets below 50 degrees anymore, but I am getting older. After seeing your pics I realize that I have got nothing to bitch about. Take care this winter and I hope you all get through it safely.

Snowmobiles are mandatory where we live.

Better zip it, or we'll stop mailing all our money east.

Nice and balmy in Ontario with all the money laundering heat coming from the west.

I was in Bemidji, MN one year when it was -36 ºF (no wind.)

I flew back to St. Louis where it was 30 ºF.

I was now 66 ºF warmer but it was still below freezing.

Is that a heater or a fish finder, or both. Nice fish!

    #211 3 years ago
    Quoted from mcluvin:

One is heater, the one that looks hot
The one by the hole is a "flasher", a type of fish finder, its like fishing in a video game, you can actually see your lure on the dial and when a fish gets near its a larger spot on the dial, its a blast. (and you can tell if fish are around)

Heading back out today to the lake!!!! The whole fam is coming this time, gonna fish, have a weiner roast, and crush beers with friends (socially distanced of course outside!)

Crazy, it is +12 C and rainy on the East coast. You guys can keep all that snow up there.

This makes my home state of Michigan look like a tropical paradise. I remember one week in the early nineties when the temps were so cold where school was finally canceled due to ridiculous wind chill (like -40 F or -60 F or something in that range...can't remember exact number). At least you can add layers when it's cold. Summers down in North Carolina are long and brutal. I'll take cold over hot.

    #218 3 years ago

Cold is fine as long as you don't lose some digits.

    #219 3 years ago

Feb 8th, arrived late for work. Which only happens every 5 years or so. The pin hauler didn't want to start. Even my 20 year old battery booster gave up its ghost with a final wisp of blue/black smoke.

Don't you guys use an oil plug or other style engine heater? Do you put a radiator air flow block so it will heat up faster?
I was watching Overlander Paul Marsh going through Siberia and they never shut the engine off.

    #221 3 years ago
    Quoted from phil-lee:

    other style engine heater?

Most new vehicles sold in Canada have block heaters installed during assembly. But not all of them as the block heater is an option. I didn't plug it in on Saturday. There are also heated battery blankets, electric interior heaters that one can get from most parts stores.

    #222 3 years ago

I'm in SouthCentral AK, and -30 is pretty damned cold. Colder in the interior, tho.

My buddy owns a GMC/Chev dealership, they used to come standard in Canada with block heaters, Now he has to make sure every vehicle is ordered with one.

I bought an '08 Enclave, a lady in Regina that owned a implement dealership had. I bought it on a -40 day, searched the engine compartment in the dark outside for an hour or two looking for the cable tied up cord, couldn't find the fucker, called the dealer I bought it from, he found the build sheet - no block heater ordered/installed. The lady never parked it inside a heated shop. I had the dealer install one on their dime.

Question for all of you living up in the extreme cold. Does your windshield wiper fluid and squirters continue to work? Here in the Midwest they treat our roads with chemicals/salt to keep them from freezing. As a result we all drive around with a grey slime on everythng. The squirters freeze up, the windows slime up and it is very difficult to navigate. As a bonus you can almost taste it while you watch your vehicle slowly rust away.

    #225 3 years ago

You can buy -40 Celsius washed fluid here not sure if it’s available there?

    #226 3 years ago
    Quoted from rwmech5:

No use in using windshield washer fluid at that temp - it would come out as vapor if it made it out at all.

-40 washer fluid is not for de-icing a windshield.
Remember that most washer fluid bottles are the engine bay, which is going to warm up the fluid. When the cars windshield is warmed by the defrost system, the windshield will not be -40 degrees. Using the -40 or -15 degree washer fluid on a cold frozen windshield will only create more ice.

I just want to give credit where credit is due to mother nature this year before I start bitching about winter again. This has ben the best fall season I can ever remember in Saskatchewan. We've had great weather, no snow (yet.......supposed to come this week). So I just wanted to put up a nice positive vibe before my winter complaining starts, HA!

    #239 2 years ago

Way to jinx it, you know we’re all going today for your blasphemy!

    #240 2 years ago

It’s been a fabulous autumn here out east, too. We got a second harvest of raspberries that lasted until last week; I can only remember one other year in the last ten where that happened. But…..

    Winter is coming

We have had the coldest November and December up here and have set records, January is starting out the same. How has it been for you?

    #244 2 years ago

September through early December was totally decent.

Started to get awful around Dec 20 - has stayed super cold other than a few -20 to -24 days that felt great actually, which is fucked. You know how cold -33 is when -20 feels like hoodie weather

*disclaimer - I only said "hoodie" for everyone outside of Saskatchewan, where we all KNOW it's called a bunnyhug!
