I am no art critic but I am a potential consumer. I don't like the mixed of realistic and computer generated art. Hopefully this is just concept art but I doubt it.
And, one can form an opinion on anything which is released. That is why it is released. If they want to give us 1%, then I will form an opinion on that 1%. They should ensure that 1% is their best though.

Quoted from LoveNeverDiesGuy:

If you were the artist, why didn't American Pinball give you credit at pinball expo and announce your name when showing playfield and seminar? I think the question was asked 2 or 4 times durring the seminar and American pinball did not have a name or answer. Just want to know why no mention of you? I do like your work.

Probably because they knew they were going to scrap the whole project including the art and start over.

Sorry about that. I'm sure if you put together a litho graph print of Houdini pinball you would have interested buyers on pinside. Your art is definitely compatible to pinball. Thank you for your work.

stop conflating your Houdinis!!!

We've been told that underneath that garbage bag is a completely new machine.

wait?

are those old photos? or new photos?

#57 2 years ago

I will reserve judgement until a fully populated playfield is available

Quoted from BackFlipper:

I have mixed feelings on it. What do you think?

Edge glow/dodge/burn instead of shadows. Textures with a 3D/CGI look... hmmm...

I'll wait and check out the game tomorrow at TPF (assuming it's revealed tomorrow and not Saturday)

A fully populated one was available at expo and that didn't make anybody happy!!!

#60 2 years ago

What? The fully populated playfield at EXPO was the incomplete JPOP design with parts that weren't connected. People were unhappy to see a playfield when they were told there would be a playable game. This time there is a NEWLY designed game that will be playable at TPF. Very different scenario.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

#61 2 years ago

not sure why I am getting thumbs downed?

Are those full pf pics from the new game or the old Jpop game?

this is what happens when companies try to hype with crap photos and cant conrtol the message.

#62 2 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

True, but that is because there was a fully populated Houdini cabinet with flashing lights shown in Vegas.

Anyways, that version of Houdini is apparently dead.

#63 2 years ago

I don't think any of us will really ooh & ahh over a poor cut & paste photoshop job.

The pic with the flyer stand and cardboard dude to the left of the game is the old art package. Not sure why it's still circulating or why people thumbs-downed you..

This is what happens when people comment about shit they don't know about.

If you aren't aware that those pics are from the reveal in Vegas which has now been completely scrapped, then perhaps you shouldn't be making any comments whatsoever?

I know that's not the Pinside way though. Thus, downvotes. Nothing that will keep you from commenting further.

#66 2 years ago

The confusion is AP didn't remove the old Houdini photos from their facebook, so some people are mistakenly thinking it's the game they are making. That was a mistake. Hopefully they update their facebook page after the show.

Give it a break guys.

It looks ok. At least they seem to be trying.

Way better than any of these. And there are lots of others too. Remember It's only very, very recently Stern pins started having decent art.

I do too, but I'm not making statements about either playfield unlike other people.

Thanks for the downvotes yawl! They make my teeth white.

#70 2 years ago

New art looks like garbage. Mixed-resolution busy mess. Looks like N64 textures mixed with photos. Whoever is in charge of AP's marketing should be fired, releasing massive close-up snippets of horrible art as a "tease".

Another fail for American Pinball.

#71 2 years ago

Yup, the ol' Pinside know everything brigade is out in full force.

#72 2 years ago

Who knows yet what it will be like.

I seem to remember a while back many many on here were predicting that Aerosmith would be a disaster of a game.

And now it is feeling the love

#73 2 years ago

I can remember a time when this was getting some hate as well:

alien art (resized).png

That's why I'm taking a "wait and see" approach.

#74 2 years ago

FWIW that cropped pic of alien still looks crappy, but when placed in the context of the rest of the playfield, plus plastics and all, it looks much better. I still think the collage and mismatched styles are the worst aspect of an otherwise good art package.

...and those are the ones people get excited for and willing to spend crazy high NIB prices on. I don't mind Sega art if I'm buying a Sega pin for $600 or $800! For $7000 though!??!?! F NO! Too many NICE looking pinball options in the NIB market for a poor art game to exist.

#80 2 years ago

That website is a hot hot mess of crud.

The photo of their facility is horrible- and unflattering....it all looks sloppy and cheap....sorry Scott (their CMO) this looks terrible...

Your should hire someone to re do the site from Fiverr.com...looks like you have a cheap version of Squarespace you're using....

these guys LOVE pinball- and can give you a quality site at a low cost:

generationsbeyond.com

(Yes I'm in Marketing- and no that's not my company- but man are they talented and love pinball!)

#81 2 years ago

I can't imagine that having to literally scrap an entire design and art piece and start anew was cheap or easy. I'm guessing that this art was an easy way to cut corners.

And who knows... Zooming in on anything isn't flattering, so maybe when we see the bigger picture, things will start to look better.

Either way, I'm rooting for these guys. I hope the game works out for them.

"Quake circa 1998" was how I literally just described it to someone else. Maybe it looks better as an entire package.

Lord have mercy, I can't believe how silly Pinsiders act whenever any information gets released.

If I made pinball machines, I'd stay away from this place like the plague.

Over / under on how many people will change their mind once the game is playable? You know, like the people who changed their minds on GoT... and Aerosmith... and The Hobbit... and Dialed In... and B66... et cetera and so forth.

Meanwhile, we got a dude who got screwed over on TBL proclaiming AP as a "fail". A fail that hasn't taken anyone's money, but yeah for sure a fail!

#87 2 years ago

Question: When was the last time photoshopped clip art was used for an unlicensed theme?

-mof

#88 2 years ago

In addition, everyone proclaiming this as a failure or whatever are slapping rosh and Joe Balcer in the face. Is there no camaraderie amongst pinsiders, or is everyone so busy trying to be "right" about things on the internet that they can't say something good about the people designing these games?

You'd think after expressing the exact same bewilderment 1000 times you'd learn.

We all wish you made pinball machines

How many people change their minds that it looks like shit? Not a lot if that what it looks like. No one loves the way GOT looks, just the way it plays. Or do you mean games like The Hobbit & Alien that changed aspects of design due to pinside critiques?

EDIT: You can edit you message text so you don't keep posting multiple times in a row making the thread *gasp* aboot you per usual.

And you don't have to respond to my every post, either, sweetheart.

#93 2 years ago

I'm excited to play the game. Balcer is a good designer. I just have to be honest about the teased art. It just doesn't look great. If the game looks good in person, all this reaction will blow away and lessons will be learned in how to properly tease something.

And ugly games can be fun. Even if it looks terrible in person, gameplay can overcome that. There's plenty to be seen.

#94 2 years ago

too early to give an opinion, gotta see the entire package first.

#95 2 years ago
Quoted from BackFlipper:

Photoshop Layer styles? BEVEL & EMBOSS! Making my eyes bleed.

Playfield looks nice at least... But the Playfield and the Backglass look totally different from each other. One is illustrated while the other is clip art, layer styles and filters..

#96 2 years ago

I'll take "Pinball History", Jack, for $50...

"Name the last pin that had photoshopped clip art that was an unlicensed theme."

Are you thinking that they might have licensed Houdini? The "hanging upside down" image does look like the Adrien Brody Houdini.

#98 2 years ago

I can't wait for tomorrow's reveal.

#99 2 years ago
Quoted from Rarehero:

Nope, the $50 question is a pinball history quiz question... name the last pin that was photoshopped clip art AND unlicensed.

Hmmm...I was gonna guess High Roller Casino, but I just looked at it and it isn't Photoshopped...hmmmm
