I'm having a segment missing problem on my Laser Ball Williams system 6. I checked all the resistors which were all in vlue,so I changed the udn184 display digit driver.
Turned it on and it smoked. Not sure if this happened before that created this problem and I just didn't notice.
Going to change IC5 next.Hoping that is the issue.
Anybody know why the chip would smoke.
I did put in a socket.Work looks Ok

    Some possibilities:
Are you certain the IC was oriented correctly?
It could have been a defective IC
"The work looks ok" doesn't mean much - use a meter to check all connections.

Ill revisit the board. Looks Ok I meant I have changed several chips without any problem and I inspected the board closely after smoke and it "looked ok"
So I have 2 extra chips I'll try and replace this one soon.
    Thank you

    Ok. I figured it out.
I installed the wrong chip. Not only that,I had ordered the wrong chip in haste.
So I installed the chip I got without double checking.
This is what I got for being in a hurry to get machine back you.
    Lesson learned....
