Quoted from labnip:yeah...
banks of them, and individual ones across different places.
each can be lifted up and/or down as an individual item by software during game play.defender-pin-1.jpg 171 KB
Nice looking machine,, Man that game kicks my butt on a regular basis.
I was just looking at the solenoid table and i think they drop the banks all at once, Although i thought i remembered there being two coils on every drop. I'll have to check tonight....
Nice heavy PF eh?
Quoted from vid1900:Here is a video showing Defender raising and lowering individual drops without resetting the whole bank, way back in 1982.

I think what is going on in that video is they drop all at once and then reset individually. It' s the opposite of the early bally SS banks where they would all reset at once and then drop individually.
Might be an innovation here from JJP. Albeit sort of a logical step from the ~1985 technology.
Arghh.. I'm tired of working, I guess i'll go home and look under the playfield...
Quoted from vid1900:At 59 seconds, you can see the center target drop without contact with a ball.
Vid,
I took a look underneath, the Mechanisms have 1 solenoid to drop all the targets, and then individual coils to raise them. Yeah in the video it looks like that is what is going on but it aint.
Remember the Williams mechs are the opposite of bally. Bally has the small coils to drop coils individually. Williams has coils to raise them individually. Bally Raises all at once with one Coil, Williams Drops them all with one coil.
The Defender has a bunch of single mechs that can both raise and lower, but they are too wide to put multiples next to each other.
Bob
PS. Thanks for all the guides!
