but ist not so easy to do

a Szene in Star Trek could have 50 Frames

a butten with "Import next 50 Frames" Need to execute 10 seconds

this way Needs Minimum 30 - 45 minutes !!!

#202 5 years ago

do you like Star Trek in color?

thx olivier for this great product!

I have tested SmartDmd with the new Raspberry B+ and it works

The SmartDmd adaptor perfectly fits to this model :

Here is a video that I made with smartdmd for Avengers LE Hulk.

here is the link :

sorry for the video quality. I'll try to post another video in the coming days.
I feel I have color + - 30% of the frames of the game.
I unfortunately out of memory, so I can not color any frames.
I colored animations of Thor, Iron Man, Capt'n America, Hawkeye, Black Widow.
For Capt'n America and black Widow, I did not finish the full animation because there was no more memory and I had to decide which frames I wanted to finish before others.
I also color the animation for pop bumper with Capt'n America.
I do not have color the versus battle mode and Loki multiball. like i said, I had to choose which frames I wanted to finish before others.
I leave the main color green .so, I did not have to color the Hulk and save memory.
a special thank you to Oga83 and Nerbflong. they really helped me a lot.
if you have any suggestions, you can write me.

try to get a real LG panel not a "compatible with"

#216 4 years ago

what are you guys using to power the controller and Pi? are you using wall worts or tapping into machine somewhere?

a external psu

connected to the original Stern cable 240V or 110V switched
this cable is in every SAM machine at the left front corner

Where can I find the colored smartdmd files for Stern Star Trek? Or are they not available for public use?

nice work mike

i noticed at ST LE that many scenes cannot be colorized because some other things are in fron (scores)

looks like at AC DC this is easier

If I'm reading this correctly, I can do this with my Demolition Man?

1. Buy SmartDmd adaptor
2. Buy LCD Laptop Screen
3. Buy Raspberry Pi
4. Edit animations with included software
5. Enjoy!

I saw something about Williams games and single color palette. What exactly does that mean?

How do you get the files from the game to the computer for editing?

Does anyone know how to mount an LCD screen in place of the DMD?

Thanks!

NO!

Only Stern SAM is supported

at DemoMan

you can only select 1 color palette with i think 8 different colors (brightness of a color)

Ah. Thanks. I saw this on the first page and thought it meant it would work with my game.

Pinball compatibility
- 'SAM' Stern
- Data East (thanks to pinsider Winteriscoming)
- Williams/Bally (thanks to Tatanka1961)
SmartDmd should be compatible with other pinballs in the future

Yes, SmartDmd is compatible with these games. And you can add Stern/Whitestar to the list, soon (it's in beta test).

It means that it is compatible with the dmd signals : you can connect SmartDmd to your Pinball and it will display the dmd on a lcd screen, using a different color for each shade level.

Pinball Browser can colorize Stern/Sam games : you can modify any color you want on any frame. But this only works for Stern/Sam.

So it will work with my Demolition Man? But if you can't use Pinball Browser to modify the colors, what color would my DM LCD screen be if I were to install the SmartDMD? I guess I'm just a little confused.

Williams games have 4 levels of shade.
With SmartDmd, you can assign whatever color you want to each of these levels.

#233 4 years ago

Ah. I think I get it now. So I would choose all red, or all blue, or all green? But not a combination of them? It would look just like the current DMD, but a color other than orange?

No you get to pick the 4 colors you want as the shades. You could pick red green blue and black if you wanted. You have to play around with it and see how the shades work on the specific game and see if you like it.

Take this baywatch for example:

They chose a blue, a yellow, white, and a red. It's going to be more challenging to colorize with only 4 colors.

Can I be on the beta list? I would love to try to colorize apollo13!

There is a new SmartDmd version !

2x Upscaling :
The upscaling is now working perfectly on Stern pinball machines
You can have colorization and upscaling, both at the same time.

SmartDmd now has 2 methods of frame-by-frame colorization :
1- "In-frame" colorization : it's the mode that was used until now. The color information is stored in the 8 first pixels of a frame.
Some people did not like this method because of the 8 "lost" pixels.
IMO, these lost pixels could barely be seen when the colorization was properly done :
First of all, SmartDmd has a 'persistent palette' option. With this option enabled, only the first frame of an animation carries the color information which means that the 8 pixels are only used in this frame, not in the following ones.
Moreover, SmartDmd uses an algorithm to replace those pixels by something that is computed at run-time. This algorithm might not be perfect but there are technics (when colorizing a frame) that minimize the visual effect of these 8 pixels (see what monster_bash did on FG !)
But I accept the criticism and this is why I have developed a new method :

2- "Side-channel" colorization : in this (new) mode, the color information is carried by additional wires (that are currently not used by the pinball machine).
This is very similar to the YUV signal on a video monitor : the luminance and the chrominance are carried by two separate signals.
Here, the luminance is carried by the standard DMD signals while the chrominance is carried by an additional one.
In this mode, you don't have to worry about the 8 lost pixels anymore : just add colors to your frames with Pinball Browser and that's it
Pinball Browser v4.20 is required to configure this mode ("Advanced" tab and "SmartDmd configurator").
To build the "side-channel" cable, see here

I decided to keep the old "In-frame" method for backward compatibility : the side-channel only works on a Raspberry B+ and requires additional wires.

The following video is an extract from PinballMikeD AC/DC colorization with upscaling and side-channel.
See the different color schemes that are used in the different animations !

#238 4 years ago

"Side-channel" i looking great

i see no difference to the old way, only that now the picture looks perfect, without the 8 dots

great job olivier

This are REALLY GREAT news!!!

With this you have a unique standing compared to other DMD Projects

Drooling as I type.
Well done sir.

The "upscaling" wasn't featured in the ACDC Promo video as it was still being tweaked. It looks much better in person, wait until you see MET

I've tweaked a few colors for ACDC, so there are some minor changes in a handful of the animations.

As always, great work Oga.

#242 4 years ago

This is AMAZING work!
My question is how will 'colorized data' be distributed? I cannot imagine myself or a large number of people wanting to go through and colorize all of their Stern games (I have 9). I imagine 'coloring' an entire game would take quite some time.
Now if we were able to share 'colorization info' that can be easily imported into a game, that would make it a heck of a lot easier to convert games. Of course, my bank account would suffer (9 Sterns to convert).

I'm assuming when you say "upscaling", you're not actually adding dots?

#244 4 years ago

Great job on fixing the pixel issue. That was a mental road block for me as coloring EVERY pixel from one pallet by hand was quite the project.

Is there a new Smartdmd.exe needed to 'fix' the upscaling?

#245 4 years ago
Quoted from toyotaboy:

Yes, SmartDmd is adding dots
Each original pixel is converted into 4 pixels. The color of the added pixel is adjusted to make the image smoother. The resolution is doubled (width and height).
Example with and without upscaling :

Yes, there is a new Rasbperry SD image in the OP

#247 4 years ago

Didn't take long to fix the "8 pixel" thing. Congrats, looks much better now.

HOLY CRAP!

So that's like two large SEGA DMD's stacked next to each other (but shrunk to LCD).

I think I need to find a Stern

Any plans to add Data East/Sega Version 3 support? I think a fully colorized R&B and SW would be fantastic
