Yeah.. you’re right - pretty tight there, proxy probably out.

I think I can squeeze the regular stand up in there. I also ordered an angled kick out to see if replacing the current kick out helps at all.
I’m sure everyone on this site knows who/what Cliffy’s are but just wanted to shout him out anyway!

Alright kiddos. It’s been a long long while since the last update so I’ll do my best to update without getting long winded.
The thing I’ve been working on for the most part is the upper playfield. The upper playfield will be a mosh pit at a show. Originally the concept was to have a mini flipper or controllable slings and a spinning disc to add some chaos to the pit. Unfortunately where I had planned for the flipper to come up didn’t align the way I had hoped. The sling mech was the backup plan but would have required some fabrication. The other issue was the jump ramp out of the shooter lane being under the upper playfield made it pretty much impossible to fit any mechs under the upper playfield.
The solution? Reverse upper playfield. Credit to the wife for the idea but reversing the angle of the upper playfield allows to fit a flipper on the backboard as well as makes room for a spinning disc mech mounted to the bottom of the upper playfield. Jury is still out on whether we actually use a disc or not.
Once I decided on the reverse upper playfield I quickly realized that would mean making some custom parts. Starting with a bracket that would angle a flipper mech to match the reverse playfield angle. I quickly realized I was going to need to dive into 3D printing. Which I’ve learned is a whole hobby of it’s own.

I’m not great at 3D modeling or printing but I’m making headway regardless.

The stage dive locks a ball behind the captive ball on the main playfield. This can be released at any time for 2X playfield. The other exit feeds the right return habit trail and is a safe escape from the police breaking up the show. The drain gets you roughed up by the cops in the pop bumpers.
Printed the safe escape feed.

Would highly recommend sturdying the screw mount points with more attachment to the main structure and using an angled piece on each to provide 2-axis support. I started out doing bosses similar to yours but I had a lot snap off of prints when mounting. The angled piece stopped that right away. Granted I use power tools to screw usually but non-the-less, it sucks to have mount points break off on a 15 hr print.
Love the flipper thru the backboard, I don’t think that’s been done before! Fun idea with the mosh pit. Keep up the updates, I love seeing progress! 3D printing opens up a while nother world for sure. Unfortunately modeling seems to take some time but the end result of being able to replicate a part with zero effort or tweak it with little effort is so nice!!!
It’s PETG but I think I’ll do PLA next time. Totally agree on the mounting points I reinforced them on later prints but the first one on the scoop entrance will need to be redone eventually.
Ah gotcha, yeah petg seems much stronger. I would print with it but I was having huge stringing issues and then learned about possible VOCs and I work from home in the printer room so PLA it is lol

Furiously googles VOCs.

Ha! Guess it’s also about nano-particles. I can’t tell from reading if either are much of a concern or not, but seen some concern about it even with Pinside users that 3D print. I spend all day in a non vented room with it running pretty often so I figure why take chances. Plus the whole stringing issues. PLA is so nice to print, I just wish it was sturdier in some situations where small walls are required
Yeah. I haven’t been able to get perfect prints and I have to baby it especially on large shell areas but I also think my machine isn’t quite dialed in yet. I’d be curious to see if PLA helps some of my issues. Guess I’ll find out next spool!
Had a change of heart about the reverse upper playfield stuff. Traded it in for a physical ball lock and or ramp orbit combo thingy and a hurry up shot that will use a secondary diverter on the right ramp to feed a vuk behind the backboard that will wire form feed the 2X playfield captive ball lock in the center of the playfield. Mocked it all up in cardboard. Pretty confident she’ll work great. Also included some photos of me trying and failing to make some wireforms and the obligatory rats nest update pic.

Hell yeah. Little sad to see that reverse pf go away, that would have been wild to play but progress forward is good!
Awesome progress and theme! I watched SLC Punk probably 25 times when I was younger. One of my favorites.
Like 8 years ago the director was trying to drum up interest in the terrible sequel. I tweeted at him “plz no, no one wants this” and tweeted back angrily from the movie account. A proud day for me lol.

Yeah. I liked the idea of it but it just wasn’t fun to flip. There where only two shots and neither particularly rewarding.

It’s an awesome movie but also just a vehicle to put together a bunch of punk music in one pin. Never got more than five minutes into the sequel. How you can spend decades in Hollywood and somehow get worse at filmmaking is beyond me. I was in the scene when they filmed sequel and non of the local punks would extra for it. Even though there was a free show. Haha.
I’ve decided I want to move beyond the prototype playfield onto what I’m calling the first white wood. There are still a couple things to figure out but I want a proper playfield as I head into winter so that I can code modes properly with light shows and all.
I’m not the best at 3D modeling but I’m slowly getting there. I took the original Diner playfield to a place that photographs large scale art in order to produce prints so that I could get a really good/not warped image of the PF. I’m most of the way through cutting digital holes for what stays put and then it will be time to strip the proto white wood and do the same process with that.
Progress so far:

That art is pretty bad ass and very fitting to theme. Well done. Can’t wait to see the final product.

Thanks a lot. Wish I could take credit but I just happen to know a guy.
Okay now it’s 100% stripped and ready to be scanned by the art print people. Gotta say, taking this apart made me remember how much work it was to put together. Next playfield will be a lot prettier. Can’t wait to get started.

I’ve never fully stripped a cab so this one was a first for me. I managed to get the side rails off without using a heat gun but did end up with some minor damage to the cabinet because I got impatient and rushed it.

Yup. Screen printed. A LOT of pigment to sand through. Haha.
Quoted from Kderrick:Impressive so far. Please showcase this locally when it’s ready.
Definitely planning on making it available when the time comes. I was taught to share my toys when I was young! That will be some time off unfortunately. From a code perspective we are in our infancy.
I was really hoping to get these things primed and ready for decals today but after 7 straight hours of body work and sanding I ran out of sunlight. Some progress shots of the worst of the damage:

I don’t understand why a perfectly good Diner, a game that is getting rarer and harder to find, has to die for this project. If you’re blowing $10,000 on a custom pin why not build a custom cab? Sucks to see you sanding a diner cab and cannabilizing the parts.
1. I’m not spending 10k
2. It’s not perfectly good it’s in very poor condition (I did that on purpose)
3. Diner has a bunch of racist shit in its art and call outs.
"3. Diner has a bunch of racist shit in its art and call outs. "
Ridiculous. If you must wade into the cesspool of modern group-think (and I don't) ....I'd venture punk rock offers more offense than anything Diner has to offer.

Sorry, I had thought I read earlier in the thread the $10,000 number being used. I must have misread. And in general I wasn’t trying to instigate; I really love the game and am generally sad another one will be gone. I know they can’t all survive but …
Diner is interesting from a racism standpoint. Today I think for sure we wouldn’t accept a non-Indian doing a stereotypical Indian accent along with a stereotypical name and depiction. But, we would accept a similar depiction of a German from Octoberfest? You’re into punk right? No Doubt did Oi To The World with “Haji” as a character in the song… probably not something that makes sense for a mostly white band to be singing about. But I won’t banish it from the rotation on Spotify yet. I think in context, the multiple stereotypes on diner were probably thought of as a worldly audience and no specific slight was meant. But then again, if someone of Indian heritage hears the callouts from Diner, that probably doesn’t feel great? It’s also something I think about with Aztec, not a great depiction of native peoples on that one, yet it’s in my basement.
Anyways sorry dude, didn’t mean to piss you off, I want a punk / ska pin (LTJ is my choice), hope your project goes ok. If you don’t use the diner playfield feel free to send it to me to hang in the wall.
So that whole needed to get body work before the weather turns thing definitely happened. Lots of rain and cooler temperatures kept me from finishing the cabinet work. Today the stars aligned and we got it done. It isn’t perfect but it’s good enough.
