Thrilled to join the Skateball club yesterday! I picked this up semi-locally. it was about an hour drive each way on the interstate. My wife even came along for the adventure.

It's been sitting for many years and will need a lot of work. It has the typical playfield wear, and it looks like someone may have done some touch-up work at some point. The inside of the cabinent is filthy and there's some corrosion and rust on some hardware that I wasn't expecting to find. I think it sat outside/exposed to the elements for a period of time.

The cabinent and plastics are good. MPU has some pretty heavy battery damage and supposedly doesn't boot. I didn't even bother trying based on the damage. I'm still debating about rebuilding or just replacing. I know there's the Alltek Ultimate MPU and then there's the NVRAM (Pinball Electronics from barakandl) version for $30 less. Any thoughts? If I go the replacement route (which I'm leaning towards), is one better than the other? They both support all of the games and have freeplay, which is a nice addition.

So I noticed this interesting brass plate with a number on the side of the back box.

IMG_20211226_204749501 (resized).jpgIMG_20211226_204749501 (resized).jpg

I've never seen this before on any pin. Do you think this was added by an operator? It doesn't match the number under the playfield or on a tag in the backbox (which area both different numbers).

Any thoughts? Has anyone seen something like this before?

Well, did some work on the machine and started looking closer at the mpu board. In addition to pretty substantial battery acid damage, three of the main socketed chips have very rusty legs. They are so rusted that on those three chips, over half of the legs are rusted completely through. I have no idea why only three chips rusted and the others are completely fine. After making this discovery, I'm bailing completely on fixing the original board and just going to buy a new one.

Making some progress! New drop targets!

They look so much better than the originals. I may have to replace pop bumper caps as well based on how good the new drops look.

So I've been making some progress on my Skateball back from the dead. Some before photos:

I completely stripped the playfield. The playfield was cleaned multiple times and a nice coat of wax applied to protect the remaining paint. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the paint work where it is not worn through is in good condition and has a nice reflection and shine to it after cleaning.

I installed new rubber rings, flipper bats, drop targets, pop bumper caps, and a new pinball.

I installed a new Alltek MPU which got it up and running and playing.

I'm going to have to do some work on the lamp driver board/playfield sockets as just under half of the computer controlled lamps are out.

Since it plays, I decided to tackle the no sound issue. The U4 chip had all but one of the legs broken off. I removed the old socket, installed a new socket and brand new U4 chip. I'm running into one issue with the sound. Anytime it tries to play anything that is "chime?" based (the new game tune), it gets stuck and just keeps holding the first chime note until you hit a target that plays something else and then it gets unstuck. Noise based sound effects (game over, going through upper lanes, bonus count down, etc...) play fine. Has any one had this problem before? I am guessing that the melodies are created on the spot from the sample (unlike the noises) and what ever "creates/plays" them is causing the issue? I could be completely wrong though. I'm just guessing. Where should I start? Would this be an issue with the 6808 CPU or 6810 ROM on the sound board?

So I noticed the other day that my Skateball doesn't tilt, even when you manually move the tilt bob or slam switches. Is there a switch that disables tilting? I looked at the manual and didn't see anything.

#483 2 years ago

I think so. I do see 2 cut wires on the tilt that checks for lifting the front of the machine, but there are other wires there as well.

Here are some photos I took with my cell phone

Fixed the tilt mechanism. Turns out the ring contact that screws on to the tilt ring was corroded and not making contact. Sandpaper cleaned it right up.

I've had my harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner for a number of years and it gets the job done. I've used it for car parts, pinball machine parts, and even hardware on musical instruments. I've run it for fairly long periods of time and I've never had any issues with it overheating.

For cleaning solutions, the above suggestions are good. Depending on what you are cleaning, a water and vinegar mixture can work as well. There's also an ultrasonic cleaner powder that harbor freight sells. I know they caution about using it on aluminum as it can discolor the metal.
