Should you be able to cradle the ball on the upper left flipper ? I can on mine and just wondering if this is correct

#452 1 year ago

I should have posted this in here, rather than the general forum. Does anyone have a spare of this plastic? I just got a skateball, and this piece is pretty unsalvageable. Has anyone replaced their plastics and got an old one kicking around?

I have had two Skateballs and you could not on either. It was a close thing, but not completely doable on either.

Ok thanks. I thought it probably shouldn’t be like that. I’ll be rebuilding flippers soon anyway so should correct it.

What's the expected behavior for the lane change? If I hit left flipper, there is no lane change. If I hit the right flipper, lanes shift left. Is this the way it should work? I've encountered games before where only 1 flipper does lane change, but most games I've encountered they shift right.

Yep. Right button only.

Perfect, thanks. And it's normal for the lights to move to the left, rather than to the right? I want to make sure I don't have switches / lights placed on the wrong lanes.

#458 1 year ago

Yep. It is exactly NOT what you would expect. But that is how it was designed.

#459 1 year ago

Quirky and unexpected, I love it. Thanks again!

Just cleaned my Skateball, waxed, new rubbers. Have a drop target to correct and a few pop bumpers.

Can someone check wiring of J3 on their lamp board for me?

I have two last lamps not working in my Skateball. 4k bonus, and 40k bonus.

I know the sockets and bulbs are good from jumpering them to working sockets.

I know continuity from socket lug to the board connector is good for each by doing a multimeter continuity check.

I've replaced these sockets, connectors J1-J4, reflowed headers on lamp board, replaced bad SCR on the board, and the odds against board problems would be mind bogglingly tiny at this point, as I've swapped in working boards from two other machines with the same results.

I've checked the manual vs the connector to make sure the wires are running to the run headers, and per the schematic on pinwiki, it's good.

The only thing I can think of is that the schematic is bad, and someone has wired per a bad schematic at some point.

So long story short, can someone check their J3 connector, and see if pin 1 (4k bonus) has a red wire, and pin 15 (40k bonus) has a yellow/white wire?

Wiring looks good, thanks for the pic. It's impossible that these lamps aren't lighting.

Thrilled to join the Skateball club yesterday! I picked this up semi-locally. it was about an hour drive each way on the interstate. My wife even came along for the adventure.

It's been sitting for many years and will need a lot of work. It has the typical playfield wear, and it looks like someone may have done some touch-up work at some point. The inside of the cabinent is filthy and there's some corrosion and rust on some hardware that I wasn't expecting to find. I think it sat outside/exposed to the elements for a period of time.

The cabinent and plastics are good. MPU has some pretty heavy battery damage and supposedly doesn't boot. I didn't even bother trying based on the damage. I'm still debating about rebuilding or just replacing. I know there's the Alltek Ultimate MPU and then there's the NVRAM (Pinball Electronics from barakandl) version for $30 less. Any thoughts? If I go the replacement route (which I'm leaning towards), is one better than the other? They both support all of the games and have freeplay, which is a nice addition.

Alltek or Weebly MPU will serve you well, I own both. Andrew is on the board here and contributes a lot to the community so lean towards the Weebly unit.

So I noticed this interesting brass plate with a number on the side of the back box.

IMG_20211226_204749501 (resized).jpg

I've never seen this before on any pin. Do you think this was added by an operator? It doesn't match the number under the playfield or on a tag in the backbox (which area both different numbers).

My guess would be some kind of operator's license, or a tax thing.

Well, did some work on the machine and started looking closer at the mpu board. In addition to pretty substantial battery acid damage, three of the main socketed chips have very rusty legs. They are so rusted that on those three chips, over half of the legs are rusted completely through. I have no idea why only three chips rusted and the others are completely fine. After making this discovery, I'm bailing completely on fixing the original board and just going to buy a new one.

I had something interesting happen yesterday, and I thought I'd run it past everybody here. Late in a game that ended up being a very high-scoring game, I noticed that the first three of the green multiplier lights were ALL lit (2X, 3X, 4X) at the same time. I know I was WAY past the 5X stage, and had cleared all three rollover lanes multiple times after getting up to 5X. When I cleared the three rollover lanes the next time, the three LIT multiplier lights moved up to 3X, 4X, and 5X. Very shortly afterward, the game ended. When I started a new game, the lights once again cycled normally one-at-a-time. I guess my question is: was this somehow normal in a very high-scoring game for the multiplier lights to act differently, the more you clear the rollover lanes, or achieve the "spot X" light??? Any ideas? Thanks!

Strange. I'm looking at the manual now and I believe they should only be lit one at a time and remain lit at 5x even when you max out the 1 2 3. But then again I don't think i've had too many high score games (if certain scoring thresholds are a possible influence on whatever happened.)

From the manual: "Advancing the multipliers to 5x lites the 1 2 3 Special and making 1 2 3 once more scores Special."

Got this game just this past summer and have been loving it.

Hmmm…….if it wasn’t such a high scoring game, I definitely would’ve thought something weird was going on. But for awhile, I was killing it, and had to pay more attention to the ball flying around then to what lights were being lit! Unless I try to duplicate that scenario manually (and still unsure of exactly what I would have to do, to do it), it might be a long time before I ever get to that level again. But going forward, I’ve got my eye on it for sure!

So I've been making some progress on my Skateball back from the dead. Some before photos:

038U9026 (resized).jpg
038U9033 (resized).jpg

I completely stripped the playfield. The playfield was cleaned multiple times and a nice coat of wax applied to protect the remaining paint. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the paint work where it is not worn through is in good condition and has a nice reflection and shine to it after cleaning.

038U9142 (resized).jpg
038U9043 (resized).jpg
038U9144 (resized).jpg

I installed new rubber rings, flipper bats, drop targets, pop bumper caps, and a new pinball.

IMG_20220126_170600769 (resized).jpg
IMG_20220126_170540111 (resized).jpg
IMG_20220126_170544912 (resized).jpg
IMG_20220126_170610728 (resized).jpg

I installed a new Alltek MPU which got it up and running and playing.

I'm going to have to do some work on the lamp driver board/playfield sockets as just under half of the computer controlled lamps are out.

Since it plays, I decided to tackle the no sound issue. The U4 chip had all but one of the legs broken off. I removed the old socket, installed a new socket and brand new U4 chip. I'm running into one issue with the sound. Anytime it tries to play anything that is "chime?" based (the new game tune), it gets stuck and just keeps holding the first chime note until you hit a target that plays something else and then it gets unstuck. Noise based sound effects (game over, going through upper lanes, bonus count down, etc...) play fine. Has any one had this problem before? I am guessing that the melodies are created on the spot from the sample (unlike the noises) and what ever "creates/plays" them is causing the issue? I could be completely wrong though. I'm just guessing. Where should I start? Would this be an issue with the 6808 CPU or 6810 ROM on the sound board?

So I noticed the other day that my Skateball doesn't tilt, even when you manually move the tilt bob or slam switches. Is there a switch that disables tilting? I looked at the manual and didn't see anything.

#482 6 months ago

I’ve never heard of a setting that disabled tilting. Is everything hooked up on the tilt board in the cabinet?

#483 6 months ago

I think so. I do see 2 cut wires on the tilt that checks for lifting the front of the machine, but there are other wires there as well.

Here are some photos I took with my cell phone

I went out to the storage and twisted to get this pic of my skate ball. No bob, but should give you an idea if something is missing.

Fixed the tilt mechanism. Turns out the ring contact that screws on to the tilt ring was corroded and not making contact. Sandpaper cleaned it right up.

Hey all. If anyone has any pictures of the right flipper wiring, that would be great. I did a rebuild on the flipper and now have a loose wire (off of the second coil lug. Not sure if it goes to the switch or somewhere else. Thanks so much in advance!

It is. Nice effect. It’s a wheel bearing.

What are people doing to hide the youpsicles on pf? Colored filters?

There's no rule to say that you can't mix Yoppsicles and traditional socketed bulbs. If I were to use them in future swaps, this is what I would probably do.

For sure. So, I was just holding the bearing there to see how it would look. The bearing is not quite big enough. I don’t know if there is a slightly bigger bearing for some other type of device. If I don’t do the bearing thing, I might put a socket in.
