    Hello every body.
Just picked up a silver ball mania. And trying to get the test button on coin door to activate. Mpu boots up with the 7 flash test. I had to replace the u8 chip. Coins and start button work. Game plays OK. Some of the coils don't activate. But all switches work and give score.

I have this little board for just this reason: http://www.pinitech.com/products/ballystern_cabswitch_tester.php

He's out of stock but he may have it in a kit.

Make sure the J3 connector (specifically pin 1) on the MPU and the J2 (pin 7) connector on the SDB look good. If they do make sure they have continuity from the switch to the boards

Bottom right plug on MPU, top most pin is test button. Grounding that pin (ground return is on the driver board!) enters test mode.

Remove the bottom right plug on MPU. Boot up. Ground the top most pin on that plug and see if it goes into test. That will help you narrow down the problem.

You can also try grounding the switch at the coin door to help narrow down where the circuit is open at.

    Quoted from jmindt:

Probably busted solder joint on the driver board since coils having trouble.

Thank you for the reply. The switch has continuity to the pin on j3 1 and j2 7. When I ground the j3 1 pin to the gnd on a3 board it goes into test mode.
Should I post a pic of the driver board?

Next test it to momentarily connect the 2 tabs under the test switch. If OT works your switch is bad.

If not doesn't work test the continuity of J2-7 on the sdb to ground

    #6 7 years ago

When I touch the two together at the bottom of switch. Nothing happens. When I test the continuity at j2_7 it has continuity

    #7 7 years ago

Yes but does it have continuity to ground?

    #8 7 years ago

    J2_7 has continuity to ground

At this point I'd want to check the crimp pins for both of those. They can be tarnished, crushed or broken.

I tried a different SDB and same. I'll try different mpu tommorow and see if that helps any. The pins are crimped good.

there is usually an inline plug by the coin door too so it can be taken off

On the coils that are not working. If they test at 44 volts. And have ohm at 4. Or 11 on slings.

My mind is in a bind on these. What could I check to pin point it.

coils are always "hot" but they need a path to ground to fire. The solenoid driver transistors on the driver board sink to ground completing the circuit which makes the coil pull in.

Since your diag switch is not working AND you have coils not working. Id assume you have connector problems (both on driver board, maybe even same plug).

Pull the driver board out and take some good pictures of it front and back. I bet we will see cracked solder joints on the header pins.

This one is back of header for j2

solder joints actually look ok. still connectors are always suspect and the cause of most of these problems.

this is the ground return for the diag button.

I think there is an inline harness near the coin door too so you can remove it. make sure it is plugged in.

    #17 7 years ago

The coin door did have a square harness. It tested good and burnt spot. I received a altek board today that I will try out when I am done with work today.

    #18 7 years ago

I replaced the driver board with the alltek. Everything works great now. But guess what.. The test button still needs to be jumped. So I guess I'll get that button mod chedder posted.

there is space on the mpu to drill two holes and add a tactile switch for diag advance button (thank you Coyote for idea).

    #20 7 years ago

What kind of switch should I use for that. Do you have a web sight I could pick one up at?
