Hi Everyone,

I'm helping out a friend with a Silverball Mania he picked up. We've worked out a few of the issues he had with the game so far but I got a text from him yesterday saying that random playfield lights are still out after he changed the bulbs. Obviously this could be a number of things, so I downloaded the manual and started poking around for him. I'm planning to check the following, but couldn't find much in the way of lamp matrix in the manual. I'm not familiar with Bally games(or games this old) to begin with, so I wanted to get some guidance in understanding how the playfield lights are wired to begin with.

My plan is to check the following:

1. Fuses
2. Connectors at the lamp driver. Looks like J1 and J3 go to the playfield - are there others we should check?
3. Continuity between the lamps - this is where a lamp matrix would help. Am I just missing it? How the heck are these things wired up?
4. Voltage at the sockets - does anyone know what this should read? We can reflow solder where needed.
5. Trying to clean out the sockets if they are getting voltage.
6. Lamp driver board parts - resistors and diodes (or at least what looks like diodes on the schematic). Never tested diodes before - any help here is appreciated.

I think this should hopefully help isolate the problem, my initial guess is just the connectors, since that was causing some issues with other parts of his game before, but I'd like to understand the game a little better before going through it. Any input would be a big help - thanks!

Anyone familiar with the lamp wiring that can help us out?

First & foremost, read and download you a copy of the guide from pinwiki
http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Bally/Stern

Then check your connectors & GI fuse with a meter, not just a visual inspection. Then use the pinwiki tips and see if you can trace the issues.
Report back here with your progress.

First, check the lamps with the game in Lamp Test Mode.

While the lamps are pulsing, move them in their sockets to see if the socket needs cleaning.

If he has a meter, he can directly check the Triacs on the lamp board with the power off. The ones that read different than the rest are bad.

Thanks! This has great info and confirms my suspicion that the lamps are wired up individually, that should help us start getting to the bottom of this.

Grant,

Here is some more info that could help.

I got all my lights to go, but had to change out a SCR 2N5060 to get the light back.

Been a while since I've been over my buddy's place due to some family stuff, but we're looking to pick back up this week. Maybe yquinnjr can help here. I want to try and understand as much as I can before I help him out. Based on my basic understanding of the schematic it looks like the rectifier board runs power directly to the GI on the playfield, and also to the lamp driver board, which then runs power along with "instructions" to the feature lamps, is that right? I'm trying to understand as best I can so we know what connectors to start with depending on what lights are out. Thanks!
