I’ve been slowly working on repainting a firepower over the last year or so. It was a learning exercise for me, both with the airbrush and the Cameo. I’ve got almost 150 pics I took throughout the process, but I’ll try to weed it down to just a few.
Through the process, I’ve gotten pretty good with the cameo, and I couldn’t have done it without it.
Here’s where I started, some pics from the process, and the final result. Note that I chose to not try to repaint the planet...too many ways to screw that up. I ended up repainting everything BUT the planet area. Started out as a “fix up that pop bumper” and kinda snowballed from there. Overall, I’m very happy. Just need to figure out the best solution to clear it before I do my playfield swap.

I actually ran a test to try out an idea to paint the planet. While it turned out ok, it wasn’t good enough to do on the real thing. Besides, weeding was a major pain.

You can buy some pens and just draw on paper, if you just want to learn to use the software. If you want to learn to play with the settings, though, this won’t help.

    Worked for me.

One idea is to NOT weed that O (or whatever letter is troubling you at the time).
Leave it intact until AFTER you stick it to the playfield. It usually sticks a little better than to the backing material, then you can typically lift up the body of the O without lifting the center.
Doesn’t always work, but usually helps.

I learned this move from pinheadpierre and his Comet thread

    Quoted from joshmc:

I’m wondering if there a better way of creating a path for vectors, particular for letters and numbers, text on the playfield (circled). I’ve used water slide decals for lettering previously because it just looks sharper but I would love to learn how to get an accurate vector of the playfield text as well as a technique for getting the finer detail like that circled in the attached image. If anyone can make any suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate it!

If you can create (or find) some direct scans for these text items, you should be able to create appropriate stencils from the Silhouette software by just tracing around the text color. If you need to make small corrections, you should be able to do this in that software, as well.
No, it’s not as slick as Photoshop, but can get the job done.

    That’s my suggestion,

    Quoted from joshmc:

I have a good quality scan of the entire playfield, will that do? I didn’t realise you can use silhouette to essentially do what Photoshop does. I would have thought Photoshop would trump em all haha
Edit; I can’t believe I can trace directly out of the Cameo software. For all this time I’ve been creating vectors in photoshop to import into Cameo Designer. What was the point???

Glad I was able to almost inadvertently help you out. Yeah, I think the Cameo software can trace colors pretty well.
