Just finished moding my #LOTR using my collection of figures. Believing that you can always better a beautiful pin, please share your mod ideas so the rest of us can replicate in our machines.

First up, the little hobbits in the Shire, with Gandalf the Gray, while Gondor soldiers are aiming their swords on the other side of the machine:

Over the Shire, a pewter sword with Frodo-Sam-Gollum handle on the left side, with Legolas protecting his lane (swords drawn!). Note the sword does not block view of the lanes:

Free standing path of the dead figures so as not to cover the beautiful art of the path underneath, and the Argonath statues hanging in front of the green lights, marking the northern border of Gondor:

Assortment of 4 Ringwraiths watching the nearby ring (does LOTR without a ring mod sounds like an oxymoron to you?), with Gimly ("you have my axe!) and Boromir ready to protect it. Gollum ready to sneak in and snatch it!

A lot more mods installed including the entire right side of the machine (fingers still aching from the abuse of getting into tight spaces) but my photos need to be retaken with proper lighting. Will post soon.

#6 7 years ago

Wow, that's a lot of action figures in a game that already has a lot of figures in it! That's not for me but happy you like it. Enjoy, great game.

#7 7 years ago

My latest mod are new inner art blades from sillyoldelf 20170321_203819 (resized).jpg20170321_203819 (resized).jpg20170321_203814 (resized).jpg20170321_203814 (resized).jpg

I also have:

Palantir Mod
Brass wire-form mod
Gandalf staff light mod
Stick decals on stand up targets
Shire decal
Sword decal

#8 7 years ago

@Rock914, indeed LOTR comes with 12 action figures but most playfields look sparse to me.
@comment23, these new pinblades are much better!

I just took better photos of my other mods. Sauron and his freakish friends protecting Barad Dur.

Paths of the Dead army connected by wire. They move quite a bit which is a cool effect, especially those where the ball bumps the wire. I put museum puddly on the inside of the guys to hold the wire in place.

How did you attach these figures? Wire to the posts?

My Balrog topper, I have one left.

Must be cool to see these guys moving. Lots of dead in that path!

#18 7 years ago

I attached them to posts, screws, or wherever I could. From the player position they really do look like they're floating. Would be nice to light them somehow.

Ozzie, u so lucky living in Sydney. Together with Barcelona are the best cities in The planet.
How did u make ur apron gold? U bought? Or took it to a local company? What kind of company does that?

Packer, when u lift the playfield, do the wire forms of the figures on the potd obstruct lifting and placing down? Also, do u occasionally have to adjust the wires to make the figures stand properly? Did u try to use small Springs to maximize the floating effect?

I got it made. I have them on my website.

Yeah, super lucky here! And in Barthelona!

#24 7 years ago

Mornin, the guys don't interfere with raising the playfield at all. Once I used museum puddy the guys are very secure and the extra weight helps with the movement. I didnt really experiment with different wires, just what I had on hand.

We have an under Cabinet light kit for lotr, very good effects, including flashing when the spinner is activated, but it's fully customizable so you can choose which color ties into whatever flasher you want. Very reasonably priced too.

Eek, lots of mods on mine now that I'm counting (though not nearly every mod that's available). The highlights:

Various extra/alternate figures w/ weapons
~90% LEDs w/ LEDOCD
Jay's Palantir
Inside decals (@sillyoldelf)
Lit Gandalf Staff (@Hdmike44)
Brass wire habitrail mod (@ryan1234)
Balrog whip (@PersonX99)
Arcade Upkeep dimming LED backglass thingy
LED ColorDMD
Pinball Refinery POTD mod
Custom Barad-dur lit eye and extra shire grass w/ lighting (by me)
....and lots of other smaller things I didn't list

BTW, thanks to everyone who makes all of these awesome mods.

The only other thing i really want to do to it is install the transparent green pop bumper bodies I've got, but I'm still waiting to get some matching dark green skirts.

@nman, u did the bared during eye yourself? How?

#28 7 years ago
Quoted from Gxv5:

nman, u did the bared during eye yourself? How?

Yes, pretty much.

First I picked out a good-looking, correctly-sized Eye of Sauron pendant thing off of Etsy and disassembled it, then attached it to the tower with orange Sugru (mixed from Red/Yellow to get a good color). The lighting behind it is mostly done by Comet matrix wiring and I tried a few different bulb options before settling on a Comet orange flex bulb behind it. That said, next time I place an order from them, I'm going to get a double-head flex bulb to try because I think it would be nice if it was just a touch brighter.

Really, it was all quite easy and the only semi-tricky parts were working with the Sugru and angling the wiring and bulb just right to minimize their visibility when the tower shakes. It's probably had at least 70 games on it since the install and haven't had any issues with it.

I'm almost done with Version 2 of my POTD mod. I have replaced the plain green LEDs in the POTD with addressable RGB LEDS attached behind the characters. Currently, I am coding the lighting effects and testing them in "real" game play. Will post a video soon. The fading leds on POTD really pop as it is only engaged when the ball in in that upper pf and (if you have LEDOCD) the other pf leds are off.

He is selling them in a dedicated thread he has them listed, $329USD including shipping to US, I'd think that would be the same to Canada?

That's what I was thinking too.

Anything else?

Jay’s mod but he doesn’t build them anymore that I know of. I’m hoping I catch someone selling their machine that has one that I could buy from them

Has anyone put in the "eye of sauron" flashing bulb mod in the backbox? If so, how was it?

I put it in. It looks great and would definitely recommend it.

I think a good Pinstadium lighting system is probably the best single mod for a person playing, Color DMD is nice but most of the time my eyes are on the playfield. Funny fact LOTR was the original machine Pinstadium made a kit for.

#45 5 years ago

Anyone ever mount a sword as a topper? I bought a replica Sting for the purpose, and if there was an example out there I would try to copy it. Obviously it will have to be very sturdy and immune from shaking/nudging - as the results could be disastrous.

I have seen this again. Looking great. Si are those standard action figures sold online and you just installed them there?
