I take pride in my lawn. Weeds are unacceptable.
Show us your glorious lawn!
Picture of my go - to weed remover as well.
Just clip the top of the grass when you cut. Nice healthy longer grass will suffocate the weeds and don't forget to water early in the morning.

The yellow color in front of the pick nic table is not a weed ...fyi.

#4 2 years ago

Great point and often ignored. Also change oil in your mower when required.

#6 2 years ago

Make sure you check the wheels on a push mower. Sometimes wheels will drop notches and inadvertently cause a short cut.

#8 2 years ago
Quoted from Yelobird:

I mulch sticks, rocks, or whatever is in front of the mower. Not sure I have ever sharpened the blades in 9 years. If its green its lawn to me. Not one of my favorite jobs...

Same. Bought the Honda mower about 9 years ago and don't think I have ever changed the oil. She starts on the first pull and the grass cuts so thats as far as my effort goes lol.

Don't cut mulch or rocks. Use a weed wacker.
Should be at least 40 volt. Black and decker 40 volt is my go to.

OIL CHANGE IS URGENT. Also your filter is probably a disaster.

#13 2 years ago

Very nice! Hedges are gorgeous. Love the stone work.

#15 2 years ago
Quoted from Xenon75:

My mower has an engine that requires no oil change, just add if needed... kinda odd to me but they warranty it for that usage.

Impossible! Likely your oil chamber is empty, that’s a slogan. Check your oil.

Quoted from chad:

I am in need of new wheels myself. It is worn to the point where you see a white line, kinda like on a vehicle tire. My Toro , I finally found out the year. 1987 !

Very happy with my toro no air tires. I apologize, the wheels And deck require a clean.

8" plastic wheels oem $30 each. Looking at The Home Depot for a close match, hopefully cheaper.
Pricey but I would do it.

No consideration to painting the foundation brick? That concerns me.

#26 2 years ago

The pergola/ lawn is gorgeous.

#27 2 years ago

Lawn of the year candidate imo.

#28 2 years ago

There are weeds under the deck, lattice perhaps?

#29 2 years ago
Quoted from metallik:

My front lawn is a giant clover patch. The honeybees love it. I see no reason to kill it off. Just have to pick off the occasional carpenter bee.

Your not worthy to be on this thread anymore. Sorry.

#33 2 years ago

Yea thought about it but that's where my dogs go to dig holes and lay in the dirt. I don't mind the weeds. Some of them are actually pretty cool looking
Weeds are not cool. Lattice with a trap door for the dogs.

#34 2 years ago

Grass does go into hibernation. A gold lawn in hot summer does not necessarily mean a dead lawn.

#35 2 years ago
Quoted from Dayhuff:

Great topic. Here's my story. We moved into this house in Dec 1999 so being winter time we didn't see much of the yard what with the snow and quite frankly didn't care, we were just happy to have a huge house and the basement was all mine.
Come spring 2000 I got my first look at the dead lawn with giant oaks that continued to ruin the grass for the next 18 years with leaves and sticks that never stopped making a mess until I finally said I'd had it and we had 13 trees taken out in the fall of 2017, stumps and all. Next it was time for underground sprinklers to be installed the following spring, forty yards of topsoil dirt brought in, seeded it all and it's starting to look pretty decent now. I can now say that we went from having the worst looking lawn on the street to being in the top four in my opinion. It's still got a ways to go but it's filling in pretty good over all and is a huge improvement over what it was for years.

What a dramatic change...well done!

#37 2 years ago

Don’t mean to pick but..whats with the Dead patches in front and to the right of the tree? (4th pic scrolled down from top)

#38 2 years ago
Quoted from boscokid:

I bought a Honda HRX217 when we moved into current house in 2011, embarrassed to say this is the first year I did a full tune up and new blades.
Dayhuff - that is impressive, doesn't even look like the same house

Wow...your also not worthy.

Quoted from DBLM:

We are getting there. Last year we pulled up 4 dump truck loads of rocks and pavers and put down 30 yards of dirt. The entire hill was dirt before we seeded. Have overseesed again recently. Have some bare spots going down the hill and dense shade, so it will take some time.

Looks like you are cutting too Low. Please raise your blade an inch.

I’m finally getting there, this was literally asphalt and gravel 2 years ago.

To have that turned around in 2 years is very impressive. Looks awesome.

#61 2 years ago

#62 2 years ago

Oops, I grabbed the grass killer instead of the fertilizer again Actually, it’s not my lawn. This was down the street from a job I’m working on. I’d probably need therapy if I did this to my own lawn

Might find a pyramid if that lawn is dug up! Terrible.

#84 2 years ago

I Do not believe in diagonal cuts. North south , then east west. Never diagonal., it causes stress to the grass.

Also Pics of a festering low growing weed that's spreading fast on my front lawn. Not good. Anyone recognise this?

#117 2 years ago

It's also a pretentious way to cut.

#119 2 years ago

Ooooh look at me! That's what diagonal cuts say to me. Its not recommended in a standard family oriented community. Take your obscure grass cut and move to hills!

Non bag. Don't believe in bags if your lawn is well maintained. Grass clippings are good for the lawn. I use a mulch blade certain times of the year.

Another tip
for the people that use companies to tend their lawn. Always be courteous , offer water and stand in view of the Gardner at all times . You will see an immediate improvement. According to my dad.

Edging should always be angled. Very impressed!

#170 2 years ago
Quoted from RyanStl:

How important is edging the sidewalk? I have an edger that I used to intall an invisible dog fence. I tried on the sidewalk and it was just throwing sparks and didn't work well for intended use. I just hit the edge with my weed eater.

Quoted from mbwalker:

A couple of things I do for weeds:
1) 2, 4-D: It's my 'go to' weed killer, but I just spot spray, so I don't mind using it. Occasionally, I might use a hose-end sprayer or a 15 gal tank to hit areas that gets out of control by the woods (haven't done it for years). Plus I don't like putting weed killer down in areas that don't have weeds (don't want to burden the bluegrass unnecessarily).
2) I mentioned Tenacity earlier in the thread (post #165) which kills weeds by stopping photosynthesis (weed turns white and dies). It can take care of some weeds 2,4-D doesn't attack (like Johnson grass - i.e. what I would call 'barnyard' grass). Catch is it takes WEEKS to work in some cases, likely needs a second coat 2 weeks later, and is expensive (but not really in the long run since you barely use any for a gallon of water). Very impressive stuff and you can even seed in the same area at the same time. It's just not a 'spray and forget' like 2,4-D. I've had my bottle going on 3 years now and it still works.
A side note - get some cheap blue dye at a farm/garden store - really helps to see what you sprayed and what you missed. Blue disappears in a day or so, doesn't stain. And a couple of drops of Dawn helps too - acts as a wetting agent.
I should also add I don't do Weed 'n Feed fertilizer. Kind of a waste since the active ingredient has to land on the weed, and ideally the weed needs to be wet.

Quoted from VALIS666:

What do you guys use for weeds? This is my fourth summer in this house. Year one I used Roundup, which is effective, but also stays a long time in the ground and over time works its way out further than you sprayed it and kills the grass next to the beds.
Year two I used Weed B Gon, which is also a chemical treatment but supposedly less hazardous to both grass and people/pets, and the results were decent, not great. However, it's main ingredient, 2,4-D, has recently been put on a WHO advisory list, but plenty of agencies say it's safe. One of our dogs got cancer and sadly died from it last year. Are either of these chemicals responsible? Impossible to say, of course, but I'd rather not roll the dice again having three dogs currently, two of them puppies.
Last year I used one of those long blow torches that hook up to a propane tank, which is fun of course, but it takes *forever* as you have to hold the torch over every weed for about 30 seconds to make sure it's dead at the root. If you have 10-20 weeds, it's great. If you have hundreds, it's not an option. It's also not very fun to use in the hot summer, obviously.
This year I'm using a rototiller attachment to my Ryobi 40v multitool, and that has mixed results as well. Works great if all you have is soil and weeds to work with, but the beds I'm trying to weed have lots of trees and bushes, which means tons of roots. This thing is tough enough on the back after a while, but getting caught on roots, which then sharply jerks the machine forward, is murder on the back after an hour.
The best solution is one day laying down mesh over these beds then putting stone on top, but I'm not ready for that project this year. Hand picking isn't really an option considering there's four large beds plus an entire paver block patio where weeds come through the gaps.

You are cutting too short. Topsoil ,over seed and water. It's that simple. Avoid the "honey you need to cut the lawn" my wife seemed more Interested in a short lawn but has realised I was right. Choke the weeds with kentucky bluegrass. It may take years before it finally catches in certain areas.

Because I'm close to the lake and my water table is low...my brother in law said a fiberglass pool may rise? I ask the masses..what would I put cement with a crap load of tree roots around me? Am I wrong? Would the fiberglass not repel the water better ..Haven't had an expert to price yet..we just decided..I need answers

What about those grass leveling drums you fill with water then roll the lawn?

#318 2 years ago

Be eclectic and have fun with branches from fallen trees! ..made this garden lattice this year.
Galvanised screws assorted sizes, and you are good to go. Start with a solid frame, then solid medium branches. Add smaller pieces weaving throughout . Second pic /w sunflower is the first one I made over 10 years ago.

This is my current trouble spot. Had a 50ft pine here that fell over winter, so this is my first go at leveling and making it somewhat green. Didnt weed/feed as it was bare dirt in spring. Still has a bit of unlevel to it.

#340 2 years ago
Quoted from MT45:

Wife mows our ranch weekly. Takes 2 mowers and about 10-12 hours. She’s got a John Deere Zero Turn for the smaller area (1-3 acres) and a 4 WD JD tractor with a tow behind Kunz Engineering mower. Cuts 10 feet wide per pass. She mows 20+ acres per week down to “lawn like” level. Thankfully we have around 15 acres as wooded or horse paddocks (she mows the paddocks too but only occasionally)
[quoted image]

“lawn like” level? ..like to see a close up of the cut.

#341 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

Ditto about rock.
A few years ago I finally got tired of hauling a truck load or two of mulch every spring. Plus, at some point the weeds will undoubtedly start to show up.
Did the concrete edging and put down crushed river rock. Hauled a 1/2 yard of rock every single day after work for well over a month - not kidding!
In the end, so much easier than the mulch, and looks great. When wet, the colors really pop. Very low maintenance. Just weed-whack the edge and spray/pull a couple of stands of grass when they pop up.

Careful sick trees could be carriers of the Asian bore beetle that will kill every ash

#381 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

I think a lot of ash got nailed a fair number of years ago in my neck of the state. They don't seem to talk about the beetles anymore that I can recall. But on my property, I have about almost all maples. To the point where the taller ones are starving the smaller ones for sunlight. Some are barren of leaves almost all the way up to the top.
So when the developer was doing the initial subdivision (+1.5 acre lots, 35 lots), he must have taken a dozer thru the woods out back to let some light in. Great, but on the flip side, he scraped the sides of some of the trees since I can see bark damage. No biggie really, I have far too many trees anyways. But those are some that I want to take down for sure.
Not trying to clear the woods and make a park, just want some light so I can have grass once again rather than mud. Fescue would be my choice back there, got bluegrass in the 'yard' part of the property.
Here's my slice of the planet:
[quoted image]
Edit: I should add, I do have a chainsaw, but wanted the pro's to do the bigger trees.

They wiped out 3/4 of my ash trees

#384 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

Yikes! What do you guys normally have up your way for common trees (given the cold weather)?

Ash maple cedar spruce

#385 2 years ago
Quoted from chad:

My two trees as well.

#386 2 years ago

Ash are useless over grown weeds.
Burn in 2 seconds on a fire.

#400 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

Sort of assumed that from your post, but just wanted to check. I use a pull-behind dethatcher on the riding mower. Not as good as a 'real' one, but seems to do a decent enough job. Neighbor has a big JD riding mower, and he has a really good aerator and does my yard in about 20 min.

sorry to interject, while the team from the NLA review candidates, My wife asks: does the Rubber tipple inhibit plant growth? Good question, just being thorough and fair.

#454 2 years ago
Quoted from VALIS666:

Instead of bagging leaves this year I've been mulching them with either the push mower or ride-on and it's awesome, I wish I started doing this sooner. It doesn't really save that much time as I have to blow/rake the leaves into lines first (kind of like tree cocaine) and that takes a while, but what would have been at least 30 full leaf bags by this point is just very fine mulch and leaf dust for the planter beds. It's probably good to put a little on the lawn too?

Exactly what you are doing ..keep your blade high at all times, every time. That’s the key to a beautiful Lawn. Never cave in to your wife when she is more interested in keeping up with the jonses.

#462 2 years ago

Make little path to a bench where you can chill and watch nature.or get away from your wife

#464 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

I cleared out paths shortly after we built the house and have maintained it over the years. But maples grow like weeds and what use to be grassy paths are slowly being starved of sun, so a few needed to go, and likely a few more this year. I even had to move the shed's solar panel up by the house this year. My chill place is the shed, LOL.
I used to take the dog out there and I'd chase her around or vice versa. Then she'd go off the beaten path (but always stayed in the boundaries) and get burrs and what not on her. But it was worth it, she had a great time.
Not a lot of woods, maybe a 1/2 acre (my chunk of it anyways). Enough to be fun and wear me out at the same time. Surprising the critters the trail cam spots out there. It's a zoo!

I'm ok with fires in my yard ..you? ..wondering about all the brush and branches. Love to cook campfire hot dogs in the summer!

I'd have more fun w/the chain saw than burning down the woods, the neighbors (and their woods) would likely agree!
Got a new chain for it last year, wow...cuts the trees like they were made of butter.

A medium size chimnea may do the trick and will cook hotdogs!

I think my new idiot neighbor stole my lawn mower grass chute. Had a few drinks and seething.

#473 2 years ago

Yes..no joke
Sometimes the chute disengages and ends up in my bushes. Self says continue mowing and pickup chute later. Mabey i forgot because the chute is missing! I Have checked every square inch of my property. Previous owners left a mower behind that requires a chute?? Now Ill admit I did throw a snowball and moon him.

So is the one on the left the sump drain? And the one on the right is some sort of french drain?

I think the left pipe original foundation drain ..the right French drain is current drain..3" pipe

#513 2 years ago
Quoted from Grandnational007:

Core aerate, THEN seed...seeds gets down into the core holes exposing it to more moisture, and preventing wash away and critters eating it.
In a small area- top dress, seed, then lay down a generous layer of straw (NOT HAY) on top for protection.

Aerator machines are cheap to rent and fun to operate.

#514 2 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

The French Drain pipe...the holes need to be facing down. So since you got things dug up, you might want to replace that, toss some stones around it too, etc. Do you have water issues in that area?

Well...if you have (2) Crazy as hell German Shorthairs..and when you let them out the slider door (8' of patio cement before the grass starts) then they see a rabbit or worse yet, the all time enemy "The squirl", The yard turns into mud. These dogs have so much torque when they take off the grass is flying. Doesn't help after winter or as of late.. a bunch of rain.
I always have to reseed/resod in the spring, every year.[quoted image]

Maples grow like weeds! I was out there maybe 5 hr. today bagging w/the JD, but the weather was great today after a week of cold temps. The JD made confetti out of the leaves. Fescue will be out here, bluegrass in the yard proper.
