Quoted from swampfire:

We did a 65’ dry creek bed at the same time we sodded the front lawn, to solve our drainage problems. Our side yard gets water from 3 houses, so it can be a torrent. The guy charged me $2300 total, but I think it was worth it. He did a nice job hiding the city sewer drain in our backyard. The job took 2 truckloads of rock.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

That does look nice.

Just found this thread.
This shot was from last Oct 2021 (early fall) of the far back yard.
(near my raised bed garden)
The lawn actually looks fairly nice when freshly mowed.
But if you look closely, it is full of dandelion weeds,
Sorry Canadian bacon man.

Here in Salem Oregon, the city makes most of its general revenue from the water & sewer billings,
If you want your lawn green throughout the dry summer months,
It will cost you; I live on 2/3rd of an acre
and in summer the water bill is $200/month
In winter time (when I do not have to water the lawn) its $100/month.
When I first moved here from California, 8 yrs ago,
I wondered why a lot of lawns were brown.
Now I know.
My water bill, when I lived in Bakersfield Ca (where annual rainfall is 6"/yr),
was anywhere from $40 to $80 bucks/month.
Here where it rains 50 inches a year, it $100/mo. minimum.

Front yard lawn from a couple days ago,
along with some deer in background by the tree and chairs.
While the lawn may look OK in the photo
there is lots of moss amongst the grass.
Up here in the NW its almost impossible to keep the moss out
especially under shady white oaks with hanging limbs which are also covered with moss.
The pee burn areas in foreground are from
when/where my dog would do his business.
Sadly he passed away last month,
so I will probably leave that as is, as a reminder and tribute to him.
Cheers Dewey dog.

Yeah, you aren't kidding. Its ok too me though, but he'll never get a national gig because of it.

Question for you Zoysia guys…my sod installer left the rolled up sod in the sun for a day and a half before installing it. It has streaks of brown and yellow and white all through it. He told me that it’s “just stressed” and that in 3 weeks it’ll be fine. I’m giving it an inch of water a day - and it’s taking it all, because we have 95 degree days here. Any advice? I water it for an hour just before dawn.
[quoted image]

Well it seems that my sod installer was right. 3 weeks of watering has greened things up pretty well, in spite of the high temps. I need to back off the watering because I’m getting these little mushrooms - I wonder if they’re edible?

Quoted from swampfire:

I remember getting those in my Zoysia. I don't think those are a big deal. The grass looks healthy anyway. If you start getting Fairy Rings or what looks like soot/mold on the Zoysia, that's bad.

#911 1 year ago

I had a few in my lawn recently. Don’t water for a day or two. They will shrivel and die.

Swamp fire I’m wondering what you paid per roll of sod? I just did two small areas and it was $8 / roll. Nothing better than insto lawn.

I paid a little over $2000 for 2000 square feet. The rolls are 2’x5’, so about $10 each. You did good for $8 / roll.

Lol. I’m going to change the direction frequently. Right now I’m just trying to avoid running the mower parallel to the sod seams, which are still kinda gnarly.

I bought a Fiskars manual reel mower. Once I get this lawn safely lowered, I’d like to reel-mow it at 1” for the rest of the year.

Swampfire: crazy part is it was $6 2 seasons ago. Turf farm is nearby and I buy direct.

Freddy: very nice landscape.

Here in N.H. We have been very dry for about a month. Hopefully some rain soon or we will be in a drought. Thanks to all those who have posted and shared.

You just want to trim the top with a sharp blade. A dull.cut will cause the tip of the grass to brown

Thanks for the reminder. My blade is due for another sharpening.

You definitely want a sharp blade. What happens is the ends of the grass aren't cut clean and end up being ragged (causes issues).

You probably knew that, just tossed it out as a FYI anyways. I have two sets of blades, one mulching, the other throws - so I always sharpen the set I take off so I'm good to go when I swap.

I did a lot of research, then bought this reel mower:

https://www.fiskars.com/en-us/gardening-and-yard-care/products/reel-mowers/staysharp-max-reel-mower-362050-1002

It’s still sitting in the box, but I’m hoping to give it a try this weekend. I only have about 2000 square feet, so motorized seemed like overkill.

A reel mower should give you a nice sharp cut. It's essentially 'scissors' for grass. Let us know how it goes after taking it for a spin. Our resident lawn guru (cdnpinbacon) will likely want a macro picture of blades of grass for his approval!

Sorry, no pics, but my front lawn is starting to look like a gray graveyard with all the gray crab grass. Now it's been hot for awhile all the sedge and other crab grasses are making themselves a nuisance. I'm terminating them though.

This Fiskars reel mower is the bomb for small lawns! I was going to wait until this weekend to use it, but I had some crabgrass sticking up out of the lawn so I used it today. It’s only slightly harder to push than my rotary mower. No pics because the rain drove me back in, but the quality of the cut is awesome.

I'd reach out to the sod people and get their take on it.

You posted this picture of your zoysia grass earlier. That almost looks like fescue or bluegrass. I always think of wider blades and being low w/zoysia grass. Some kind of special zoysia?

Yeah, this is Zeon Zoysia. Narrow blades, but it does like to lay low.

My ultimate goal is to get it down to 1/2”, but I’ll probably have to level it over 3 years before I’m there.

Starting week 6 on the new Zoysia lawn, and it’s coming along well. I put down 10-10-10 fertilizer with an inch of water, and that seemed to helped some struggling areas. Unfortunately the crabgrass is also thriving. A lot of experts say not to put any weed control chemicals down for the first growing season. They say to keep the lawn mowed to under 2”, and water deeply once a week. This gives the Zoysia an advantage because the crabgrass doesn’t like being short, and it has shallower roots. But I’ve also read of people putting down Drive XLR8 on new Zoysia with no ill effects on the Zoysia. I might try it on a small hidden area of the lawn tonight as a test.
