Should I be putting something on my lawn this time of year? The front lawn looks worse than when I moved in. I do have a dog that pisses all over and had annoying sedge grass over the summer that grew crazy. Do I fertilize and overseed? I don't really want to water it though.

Instead of bagging leaves this year I've been mulching them with either the push mower or ride-on and it's awesome, I wish I started doing this sooner. It doesn't really save that much time as I have to blow/rake the leaves into lines first (kind of like tree cocaine) and that takes a while, but what would have been at least 30 full leaf bags by this point is just very fine mulch and leaf dust for the planter beds. It's probably good to put a little on the lawn too?

Exactly what you are doing ..keep your blade high at all times, every time. That’s the key to a beautiful Lawn. Never cave in to your wife when she is more interested in keeping up with the jonses.

Right out of the gate for 2022 ..beautiful lawn and perfect paved driveway pic Thanks for sharing..I get chills of lawn care joy waiting for Spring to arrive

Like many, been in yard limbo for a while.

So last fall I decided to start looking at the weather a little more in detail. Placed a weather station up in the air on the back porch so I could measure rainfall. Nothing fancy, just an Accurite 5-in-1. Kinda neat since it dumps data to WeatherUnderground too.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

Also cut down a few trees out back in the early fall, the maples were pretty much blocking all the light. Grass was dying off.

Make little path to a bench where you can chill and watch nature.or get away from your wife

I cleared out paths shortly after we built the house and have maintained it over the years. But maples grow like weeds and what use to be grassy paths are slowly being starved of sun, so a few needed to go, and likely a few more this year. I even had to move the shed's solar panel up by the house this year. My chill place is the shed, LOL.

I used to take the dog out there and I'd chase her around or vice versa. Then she'd go off the beaten path (but always stayed in the boundaries) and get burrs and what not on her. But it was worth it, she had a great time.

Not a lot of woods, maybe a 1/2 acre (my chunk of it anyways). Enough to be fun and wear me out at the same time. Surprising the critters the trail cam spots out there. It's a zoo!

I'd have more fun w/the chain saw than burning down the woods, the neighbors (and their woods) would likely agree!

Got a new chain for it last year, wow...cuts the trees like they were made of butter.

A medium size chimnea may do the trick and will cook hotdogs!

Chimnea...great for lawn brush/small branch
Burning. I'm lucky with a fire pit but my buddy has one and watched him one day burn a shit load of branches.

There's a recycling (yard waste) site maybe 10 min away, so that's really convenient. No charge, and sometime they even leave the gate open late into the evening during the summer hours. Really nice. They turn the compost into mulch, which I think is free (small charge for loading tho if you don't want to do it yourself).

I do save some of the smaller stuff for the firepit.

For the mower?

Yes..no joke
Sometimes the chute disengages and ends up in my bushes. Self says continue mowing and pickup chute later. Mabey i forgot because the chute is missing! I Have checked every square inch of my property. Previous owners left a mower behind that requires a chute?? Now Ill admit I did throw a snowball and moon him.

I've been stalking WUndergound looking for the perfect time to put down grass seed. The dogs have done a number front and back. Can't picture because it's so bad.

You definitely got a head start on the lawn greening up compared to you neighbors. If I recall correctly, wasn't that the rubber mulch you put down (too late and lazy to search the thread)?

Plant some nice shrubs around the bottom curve backyard? Perhaps a tree either side

#497 2 years ago

The grass doesn't care about the #2 dog dew, it's the pee that kills it. I never found a good online resource to tell me how to counteract the dig piss. God bless him, my huge lab is no longer with us, but that dog did a number. He would pee twice a day and a gallon would come out. He liked the same spots. The current labs spread it around more, except in the front.

Watering your lawn is solution. The nitrates in the urine is what browns the lawn. Essentially, your dog is over-fertilizing the grass in small spots causing it to burn. Water to dilute is the only real solution I'm aware of.

I tried the experiment of fertilizing less one season (I have two small dogs) and the difference was now I had a bunch of little dark green spots where the grass was fertilized (but more weeds). Watering regularly solved the issue.

Apparently piss rocks are avalible I plan on putting them on my neighbors lawns.
