Quoted from ZNET:

Yesterday, a 1972 Sega Monster Gun (air compressor powered) pellet gun arcade game arrived. Only 2 are known to exist. Perhaps someone on this forum knows of others. My friend owned both Monster Gun games and he kindly traded one of them to me. Unlike the Midway and Bally pellet gun games of the 1960s, Monster Gun has an audio element. The sound effects are eerie, complimenting the psychedelic art package, which glows under a black light. Very little is known about Monster Gun. I will have to post a video on YouTube at some point.

Yes Please do! I love Sega Arcades and I have always wondered about this one. I was just looking through Mike Pacaks flyers at Pinball Expo and saw he actually had a flyer for this game. Pretty Crazy

Midway sportsman
Sega combat

#316 9 years ago

yah I am overly pumped about the sega combat. I have played one at cedar point amusement park, and it is a blast, Its really coming together nicely.

One of you fine gentleman may be able to tell me, That sportsman GI on the front seems like its rated for 12v. I pulled out the bulbs that were up front, and they were like 1862 or something. Either way they were really dim. I checked the bulb on google and the bulb was rated at 18v which im guessing is also not right. I put in a 47 for the sake or just doing it and it was super bright and clearly not right. Could someone please tell me what bulb i need for the GI on the front glass, and the inserts? All the bulba i pulled had no markings on them.

On a side note, these EM arcades are 4, and 5 in my collection. And I must say that this sportsman is so terribly hacked, its not even funny. Also lots of shotty work like spraypainting the gun and stock black while its still sttached to the game. Nice to see the overspray on the backglass LOL.

On another side note, could someone that owns a sega combat contact me to help me with a couple questions i had about the sequence of the targets moving and how they start/stop/register?

Yah those specifically are just that. The americoin Dozer IMO is a better game since you have to push the "sand" into the lit up hoppers for it to essentially add all the sand together for different weight goals.

The assemblies are just cast aluminum. A simple disassembly, cleaning and reassembly should do the trick. I own a 1947 challenger peanut machine myself, and that's what I did. Those northwesterns should have built in heating elements in them. are yours all connected up?

Quoted from Mancave:

Anyone know of where i could find a manual??

I may have a manual for this game. I have a manual of almost every sega game so I cannot imagine that im missing this one. While I would not send you an original, I could always see if I can photo copy it and send you over a PDF. Unfortunately right now my manuals are all sitting in storage so I have no idea where they are. When I find them, I will contact you.

Quoted from aahgo:

I don't recall that it has a heater. I assume they made both versions (with and without heaters)?

Yeah I am sure they did. A lot of the time people removed the warmers since they are an electrical hazard, and also constantly being on, it dries out the nuts.

Quoted from VolunteerPin:

Great, neat thread. I wouldn't mind picking up a ball bowler but I'd prefer one already restored and near Knoxville so I can have some help setting it up and showing me the ins/outs of ownership. This would be my first EM game of any sort. I think I'd want one at least 15-16'. If you have something which might fit this or know of one let me know.
Thanks.

Theres a really nice bowler in college grove. I know the guy personally and have played his bowler. Its a very very cool machine. Hes only selling it because he picked up an MBA Bowlerama. Either way its a contact bowler. Its up here on ebay.

Quoted from Mopar:

Nice! Not so easy of a machine to get a hold of..
Does yours have a Reo-Stat to weaken/strengthen the Golfer?
Mine has a spot for one, but with no loose wires, it appears one
was never installed..
I plan on putting one in. A weaker swing should give better scores.
Presently the ball elevates higher than it should going up the ramps
thus not hitting the targets squarely..

I am not sure if it has the reostat. I will have to check that out. It is a fully operational game.

Quoted from cait001:

Sorry, no more math for me.
And what a super cool machine. Any chance you have a gameplay video of it?

There is a few gameplay videos of this game online.

I agree. It's my favorite Manikin game..
I have flip the score before, but I'm not sure if I
ever had 80 points with 4 shots remaining..
Maybe the first Player accidently gave the 2nd
Player some added points..

No no. That picture was taken right after I rebuilt that score reel. It was gummed up and sluggish. So it would never reset to 0. That’s all fixed now.

Cool game. It is kinda stupid as well in the sense that its very "1 trick pony-ish". The game goes fine in larger collections and it kind of a PIA to get running. I would be interested if you weren't in GA, but also have a facility in Suwanee that it could be dropped off at for shipping LOL

Quoted from Mopar:

Do you mean you had a Venus and did some mods, or you did the mods to the Kick-a-Poo?
I had a Comet, a couple Playboys, a few Venuses, and a Kick-a-Poo which is set up in the
game room. Because of the Shoot Again option, I kept the Kick-a-Poo..
I still have a Venus. Once I go through it, I'm thinking about modifying it so if a 70 is scored,
the player Shoots Again as in Kick-a-Poo. To me, it's a good size plus for game play..

I modified my Kickapoo and mounted cooling fans around the flash motor and solenoid assembly that keeps the flash enabled. It gets so hot, it would burn up at a show. The high CFM help really circulate air in there

1 week later
#1891 3 years ago
Quoted from Oldgoat:

Hmm, haven't noticed any excessive heat and there didn't seem to be any telltale signs of it. The load on the motor seems so light that I would think you need to run pretty much non-stop for it to be an issue (like what you probably experience at a show) I was thinking/hoping you may have come up with something like randomized variable speed flash motor to add to the game play.
I really like the game, definitely has that 'one more time' appeal. Something as simple as the flash motor really enhances game play. You focus too much on the throw and you end up with a 10 x 5...or focus too much on the throw and you get a 50 X 1.

Yeah the shows make the flash motor never stop. It’s a super fun game to play. A cool twist to puck bowling and skeeball.

It has been brought to my attention that a “collector” has been making his rounds online trying to buy games. This individual represents himself at Marc Berman or handle Marc1234 here on pinside.

Any individuals in the hobby are warned to stay away from any dealing with this individual due to false interest in buying games and cannot come up with a legitimate way to pay for them. Essentially ending the transaction in berating amount of verbiage that I cannot share with this group.

I know of at least 3 other collectors that have had similar interactions with this individual. It is recommended to not deal with him. Any of you guys, please chime in with your experiences to please keep an upstanding integrity in this hobby/group. This will be cross posted to the EM arcades group, as well as pinside.

Quoted from scootss:

Wow. That is purrrty!
Regulation scoring as in accounting for strikes & spares into the next frame?

That is correct. The math comes out correctly like regular bowling. The ten pins/strike essentially adds 20/30 for spare/with no carry over.

Quoted from cait001:

Just when you think you've assessed what's out there and know what you want...
I spent a year putting ads on European sites, and eventually was contacted by someone in the Netherlands that only spoke Dutch. So grateful it all worked out!
Congrats on the bowling machine. I think I've mostly seen pinball cabinet-style units like that from Japan.

I genuinely mean it, if you ever see another, or would ever consider selling. Let me know. I would love to see that machine next time my tabletop Rotary Merchandiser. They’d look good as friends on my bar

Quoted from Mopar:

Mini Bowl, yea. But what's the other model? Williams also?

So the other one that scores regulation is Sega Pro Bowler. I believe there’s only about 5 known examples floating around. The entire design was copied off the Williams pro bowler. The only differences were essentially cosmetics.

Whoo that baby would look real purdy with a good polish.

Quoted from ultimategameroom:

I purchased this Whirlwind trade Stim. About 20 years ago. It’s missing the gumball dispenser mechanism and didn’t have a key to open the back door. The asking price reflected that. I think it’s a beautiful machine.
People ask crazy money for trade stimulators on eBay. Your best bet is to find one at auction. Most places will email you a 10 second video of the machine operating if you request it. Victorian casino antiques in Las Vegas used to have a coin op/advertising auction twice a year. Lots of very cool machines. Murphy auctions in Denver Pa bought them a few years back. You might want to get on their email update list for upcoming auctions. You also might want to get on this company’s email list. Good luck! [quoted image][quoted image]

There is a sign museum in Cincinnati where you can see one in action. I highly recommend taking the guided tour instead of self guided. They give out a lot more info on the guided tour.

Couple of pictures from the inside. Cool place. Little small IMO, but I certainly enjoy seeing the stuff.

Thanks! She is my child. She’s a blast.

I pulled out a couple of International Mutoscope Lord’s Prayer tonight. Making 1 outta 2. Giving the one a little facelift with some new paint on the press.

Fun stupid little machine that doesn’t press anything, instead just swaps out the penny with a pre-pressed penny. Pretty silly.

Got one together a couple nights ago. Don’t see these sega copters often.i haven’t seen one available on the open market for a good 5 or 6 years now. But here’s a couple pictures I took.

I put it together to trade it for an equally polarizing/caliber game. I may actually see it through to getting it operational.

Picked up this dumb little carnival type machine over the weekend. Made by Valco Automaten. Honestly I only picked it up because I have a mini rotary merchandiser in the same cabinet form factor. Pretty cool either way.

Anyone have any other games that look like these? Something with the same cabinet type.

Haha awesome unscripted video! Thanks for sharing.

Ha yeah I honestly just wanted to embody both machines in 1. I haven’t seen another example of either machine.I’m not good with videos but figured the “Ron Swanson” approach. No frills, no fuss. My dog however always steals show.

Quoted from poppapin:

Cool game and Corgi!!

Thanks. For being novelty, I’d love to keep finding these machines. I love the look. And Roxie surely is the better half of this duo!

Quoted from edward472:

Didn't expect the air raid siren!

Yeah I should have noted it in the video, but the siren goes off for a score of 19, 20, 21. 21 being the loudest, and 19 being just a small chirp. At least based on how it scores, I’m guessing it was necessary to alarm the operator at the fair for a win. The ti let dispenser on the front cuts it’s tickets accordingly, but is not 100% on alignment. That’s just my guess.

Just noticed you're in Australia so yeah makes sense they'd be rare there. I'm not sure if Groetchen products were distributed much there. When those were made it was WWII (though the USA had not entered,) so it's not like they were being shipped West.
Check my post on Rotation Mechanisms here, and it has a section on "Fire Escape style" games. Warning, there is also a horses version if you're more into horses over skiing.

I am not sure if the base on this one is original to the machine. These did come with bases in a very rare occasions. I have only seen 2 with original bases, and one of them was a repaint to something completely different.

Quoted from Mopar:

Seriously, or joking around? Just interested in knowing. What do you mean by gone?
Years back, I restored a pretty rough 28' MBA ball bowler for one..

It’s partially a joke. This is Tdiddy’s first EM arcade. I helped him track this one considering I knew he was looking for something s little special. The guy he bought it from is a longtime collector friend of mine that decided that it was time to move it along.

It was down to the Bromley Little Pro or the Mini Golf. I tried as much as I could to push him the direction of the mini golf purely for the fact that they so seldom come up available. Needless to say, he made the right decision

#2353 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

although the M.G does
look to be in pretty nice shape..

Yeah I was low key a game I was saving for myself. Cosmetically, the cabinet is nicer on his, than mine. I am glad it is in the hands of a collection that it will see some action now. The collection it was purchased from is a really good collection of items, just not many games get played. I’ve personally pulled 3 unreleased prototypes, and many other more common titles. There’s been many titles I have completely missed out on that I feel I’ll never see again

Quoted from Mopar:

I restored a pretty rough 28' MBA ball bowler for one..

Would that happen to be Mickey Treats? If so, it is a nice example. I played it about 8 years back when I bought his fire chief

#2356 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Fire Chief. I know of the game, but never played one.
Yes, I restored the one Mickey has, but that wasn't the
one I did for the Mini Golf. The one Mickey has was much worse.
So bad, that it was given to me plus another half of a machine
I used for parts. Only 2 were known that were set up at the time.
One that Mark Brosso dropped off I did for the M.G.
What other titles did you get from that collection, and what others
does/did he have?

Through the years I have pulled out some more common stuff, to less common. A mixture of pins, and arcades, but I know we don’t care about pins here so……. Americoin junkyard, midway shooting gallery deluxe, Midway twin pirate, old Harvard token stamp, some rare solid state arcades that are kinda hybrid like Bally Big Bat Badeball SS pitch and bay (like scientific), Bally Midnight Marauders SS gun game (made like any EM gun game), Williams 4 in 1. The unreleased prototypes are Williams Match Race, Bally Winners Circle, and the Williams Direct Hit. I have not shared shared with the world that I have the direct hit in my possession yet. But it’s coming up on the restoration queue very soon. There’s been a few pieces I’ve missed on that I absolutely regret not being established enough in this hobby at the time before they walked out the door. Stuff like Still Crazy, or Jaycopter helicooter game.

I included a few pictures of the unreleased games. I’ve posted the winners circle and match race before.

Quoted from Mancave:

Gundam_Pilot_ Did you ever get the chance to look for this manual for the Sega Night Rider mate? Still happy to pay for a scanned copy I've kept my eye out online but there's just been nada

I gotta get back to where that stuff is soon. I should be back there within a couple weeks and can check that for you. I’ve been rummaging through the sega cabinets lately anyways. I’ll let you know.

These aren’t mine, but I love the story. Allegedly the guy had 3 40ft MBA bowlers. Clearly 20ft of extensions on each lane, but he had 2 set up and one not. There’s not many games I’d like to add to the collection at this point, but an MBA/Bowlerama definitely is one of them. Too cool of a bowler, just too damn expensive. But hey I have 2 kidneys and only need one.

Quoted from AlexF:

Awesome stuff! I always feel like pins are the best bang for the buck entertainment wise. These cool old arcades are what get me the most excited. They are more interesting to collect.

Don’t get me wrong, pins were the strong suit for many years. It just gets to the point where you run out of things to chase, or room. My limit for pins at the house is around 50 pins. The pin collection is also full of prototypes/samples and rare release pins. The funny thing is that I don’t own a modern stern with a LCD. They are just too expensive, and I am too cheap of a guy.

EM arcades are a fun opportunity to branch towards something different where you can add pieces that nobody around you has. Pins I feel do not hold that same regard (mostly)

#2362 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Back in the 90s when (as far as I now know) had the only MBA/Bowlarama set
up (when talking to Doc Doom, he didn't have a clue what the machine was), I had
a chance to pick up like 8 MBAs from this huge Gris Mill warehouse, but since only
fairly locally I paid $400.00 for mine, I hadn't a clue what one day they'd be worth,
They were rough, but $200.00 for all 8. I didn't have the space, but if I had
known, I would have found space. Mickey's was one of the worse of those 8.
You once being at Mickey's, did you do some traveling, or are you somewhat
driving distance from him?
A few years back, I restored what was a fairly rough Deluxe, and let it go. I now
regret that. I haven't restored the Bally Marksman yet, but I have the other Midway
and Ballys, and liked the Deluxe 2nd to the Rifle Gallery.
If you happen to still have the Deluxe and maybe like to trade, I'd have interest.
I had the scenery, bg, (not yet on the machine), but goldish Midway Deluxe Shooting
Gallery upper plate reproduced, and sold it for cheap.
My room is once again limited. but I'd arrange it so a Deluxe could be put next to the
Rifle Gallery..
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Ahhh such a good deal. More so incredible to the fact there were 8 of them!

So when I purchased my fire chief from Mickey, he had a really rough shooting gallery in the barn/garage on the ground. I cannot remember which one it was, but I know it wasn’t the rifle gallery or I would have bought it.

Is the one you restored that one he had in the barn?

That would be funny to see it again after 8 years

As for the deluxe. I do still have it, but I am not looking to move it yet. I need to make new discs for it, or maybe someone has done it already. Mines not nearly as nice as the one you restored.

I however may know where there is another deluxe kicking around in ohio. I can look into it further and let you know.

#2365 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Yes, I'd be interested in the other Deluxe. I have ball bowlers (ones a pretty next
Bally Lucky Alley) for trade, and since I have a Keeney League Leader, I'd trade a Scientific
Batting Practice that I have for it if he may have interest.
No, that Shooting gallery I'm not sure of, but he did get a Midway Shooting Gallery
from me that had a repainted cabinet that looked alright, and mechanically it played
100%. That would have been in his game room if he still had it at that time.
Yes, the Deluxe I had wasn't in great shape when I got it in, but only traded a couple
(un-restored) Wedge Heads for it. I put much time into that Deluxe..
Also, I have quite a few classic Wedge Heads if he may be interested in pins..

I can ask him but I know a scientific is a game he already has.

As for some topic content.

That Match Race game looks like they used a slightly modified Ringer/Penny Pitch cabinet.

That is correct.

Quoted from sbmania:

I picked up an unusual shuffle alley/gambling game called Chicago Coin Bulls Eye Ball Drop. You try to get balls to drop in a scoring area by shooting a puck at the appropriate target. If your score is high enough, you can win one or more colored marbles. Depending on the marble color, you get an "award" of points which I suspect represented an under-the-counter cash pay off. Pics below.
Game works fine after a light shop job and is in surprisingly nice cosmetic condition. Anybody else come across one of these?
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I am guessing this is the one that was stolen (because it was cheap) on eBay? I can’t believe it sst on the market for so long

#2378 1 year ago
Quoted from sbmania:

Indeed it was! The guy I got it from said his friend owned it and brought it to his shop to burn it. Literally. As with a big fire! The guy decided that the backglass at least might be worth something for somebody's man cave and listed it on Ebay instead of burning it. Can't believe I got it so cheap, but I'm not complaining. I will play it for awhile but may list it for sale or trade at Pinfest. Haven't definitely decided yet. There's so few of them in circulation, I haven't found any reliable pricing info on them.

It looks like a fun shuffle to me. There’s a couple of games where you have to time the drop like that. You got a great deal IMO. GAlad to see it didn’t get torched.

It’s been two weeks since the last post on this thread. What’s everyone working on?

I picked up the Bryan’s Double Decker recently. Needed some work because mech was not moving evenly side to side, and it was binding up. I had a couple of parts laying in the bottom of the coin box. I did not know where they belonged and had to figure out where they went without reference.

None the less a cool contraption to say the least. Had a built in mechanical fail safe to protect the motor in case the mechanism binds up, and allows the motor to still turn.

It was fun to get into this and get familiar with it. It needed a clean pretty badly anyways

Quoted from edward472:

Never seen a Darts. Nice find!

Me neither. I have been chasing this particular machine for a good year and a half. It’s been a roller coaster for sure. But I am under the impression that this is an unreleased prototype like my match race. I could have swore I remember reading that the production number on darts was like 9.

I haven’t seen updated pictures anywhere online since I started collecting EM arcades, and the only point of reference was clay’s pinrepair website.

I just got the darts yesterday and it does need some assembly, and improvisation. But I am confident I can figure out what’s going on and fab some stuff to make it work. I’ll keep everyone updated when I get to it within my project queue. If anyone knows me, I’ll be trying to wire that pig together at the first opportunity I get. Otherwise I am going to paint the ringer the yellow flyer paint scheme, and make of proprietary artwork for penny pitch. The paint coloring for penny pitch is TBD.

I know the likelihood is slim to non-existent, but if anyone had any schematic paperwork for this darts, let me know. I would love to have it. Unfortunately the sleeve that's stapled to the door is empty

Of course the obligatory shameless selfie pic.

Quoted from stashyboy:

I would think the logic on Darts (and Penny Pitch)would be almost exactly like Ringer. Does it function differently? Layout of the lights just bullseye instead of sand pit/horseshoe post. (?) So trouble shooting should be able to use Ringer schematics.....aren't they basically rethemed?

Unfortunately/fortunately there are some differences with the mechanics between the two. None of the steppers are marked, but the premise of having the "shot count", and "horshoe stepper" should be clearly the same assembly. They are just moved to the door because of the motorized assembly darts uses. But the one blown apart wiper board is an added stepper along with some of the relays around it.
